shirin #75, ``i am still in the working field ``aLLAH KA SHUKR HAI ``, despite all the hurdles which came in the way.``

Good for you. Keep it up!

(that was for you too Asim Hayat :)

krashid #74, ``What about the marriage prospects.``

What about them? Sure female doctors make good bait to bring in the big fish, but it`s a shame that they end up catering to parties instead of patients. Unfortunately many people ``glamourize`` the title of ``doctor`` instead of putting it to use.

Rsaxena #80, ``All this dandy-doo about Good Husbands is fine but what about Good Wives? What are the criteria for that? Is ability to make good food one of them?``

In this day and age, it`s the ability to order good food, choose a good restaurant, or know the best way to preserve tons of food in the freezer.

Shirin Ahmad: Do you know how many medical colleges there are in Pakistan? MOST (ministry of Science and Tech) is in the process of setting up seven IT universities in Pakistan. I have taught in the comp sci depts of an odd univ or two, and have a fairly good idea of how difficult it would be to set up an IT dept. I would assume it is quite a bit easier than setting up a medical college. So I am in the process of trying to figure how long it took Pakistan to set up the various medical colleges. I am familiar with the following:

Sind (7): Karachi/ Aga Khan, Dow, Baqai, Karachi Sind: Nawabshah/ Nawabshah: Jamshoro/ Liaqut

Punjab (8): Lahore/ King Edwards, Fatima Jinnah (women), Allama Iqbal: Pindi/ Army, Pindi, Fauji Foundation: Multan/ Nishtar: Bahawalpur/ Quaid-e-Azam

Baluchistan (1): Quetta/ Bolan:

NWFP(2): Peshawar/ Khyber: Abbotabad/ Ayub

Total Medical Colleges in Pakistan = 18 + the ones I may have missed

just read ``Mahajirzadeh ``. ha ha am laughing so much , might fall off my chair .... might break a bone.... that would be medically labelled as a ``Grievious Injury ``. Who would be accountable for it , Chowk, Mahajirzadeh, or you ?!!

thanks for the link ,

i liked the bit `` Allah first , muhammad next, Insaan pehley , musalman baad ``.

I tend to share this philosophy !! only i leave Allah and Muhammad out of discussions .

take care , i want to say `` keep writing ``, but if it is really getting to you , i wont ! i`ll just imply it :)))

From now on it will be ``Aqal mand ko ishara kaafi hai ``.....

Dear Urstruly,

I do not want to disturb or confuse you any further at such a crucial time in your life , when you are choosing between the fire and the frying pan .

This is just some comic relief , as you are really worried about little uzair`s circumcision, and temporal has spinned your head further , though we all know the good intention behind his post ! i hope you too can see the genuinity in his post despite the delicate frame of mind you are in the moment ! well here goes the joke.

In our surgical rotation , all us junior house officers , had to do certain procedures [ major and minor ] the major ones were like assisting surgeries ,especially the common ones like appendicectomies, cholecystectomy , mastectomy, thyroid surgery etc. as one would be doing these commonly , if decided to go into surgery. Amongst the minor ones were the procedures like `` removal of ingoing toe nail ``, and circumcision. One day over the dinner table i mentioned to my mother `` dua karein key kal O.P.D. MEIN MUJH KO KHATNEY KARNEY KO MIL JAIN ``. my mother replied `` UN HOON , LarKiaan khatney nahin karteen.I think she even added it might be unislamic to convince me .It was just a very embarassing statement , i think to be made in front of the whole family at that time , thus the quick, out of line response . Well the next day i went to the surgical O.P.D. and one of my friends came to me and said he had a perfect candidate for me . He was an 8 year old boy , who had come with his father from the interior to be circumsized.

The boy was made to lie down on the examining table. The male nurse started to get the equipment ready , as he gently tugged the boys shalwar down. i put on my gloves , and was about to start the procedure , when the boy started crying aloud, realising for the first time what the whole trip was about ``Abbo yeh tu menoo aaj kethae ley aya , tu to meno kuch wee nahin dasiya see ``. the father totally oblivious of his poor boy`s conditions kept saying `` na ro munae , aboo chaclate dilaega ``.

so that is a successful story of circumsing your child .What a `` Good Husband ``, so no fears from now on .... i know you will be able to handle it !!, even without Asif Naqshbandi [ who might be doing the same thing with his little uzair !in the next cubicle !! who knows ! self help is the best help ! remember , these words of wisdom coming from an experienced house wife to a brand- new- to- be -one !!

rgds ,

p.s. i am curious if you still want to go the domestic route !

Thank you very much for your kind wishes.

To go through the requalification process for practicing in the western countries , is really gruelling , esp. after having done it all in your own country. But once done waqwai ``Allah ka Shukr Hai ``.

ROmair # 86,

Thank you for a complete list of the medical instituitions. However i would like to make a few pertinent comments .

In my post earlier i was concentrating on Sindh only .

In the days when i was a student at D.M.C. there were just a few colleges which were recognised by The college of Physicians and Surgeons internationally. This was of great relevance to the students who wanted to go abroad, for post graduation .

To names the colleges recognised in THOSE DAYS , were

1. King Edward Medical College [Which ranked as the # 1 medical college in entire Pakistan ]in my days .

2. Fatima Jinnah Medical College

3. Dow Medical College.

4. Sind Medical College .

Later Nawabshah got its recognition.and much later Aku was born.

However there were others in my times , in fact in our 4th year we have a tour of different medical coleges. I had the lovely oportunity to be go on this tour , and did visit others in punjab , quetta .

The ones i visited were

King Edward Medical College [After visiting it, seeing their well equipped labs, their hospital, teaching staff , wide clean coridors , which definately had that grandure to it , the atmosphere of perfect professionalism , it made me instantly realise how aptly it has been ranked as # 1.

2.Fatima Jinnah was also very impressive .

We went to Bolan, Ayub, And Allama Iqbal Colleges too. They were fairly recent set ups , so lacked faciities like the older establishments .Also they were not recognised internationaly ,which was a big pit fall. maybe they are now [ when i write it is in reference to what the situation was in ``my days ``.This is because i am a bit out of touch with the updates being away from Pakistani Medicine for a long time .

As far as the newer hospitals go, Baqai was always there, but never in the capacity of a teaching hospital. .It was quite later that it became nationalised , and started serving as a medical hospital. I dont think there is a proper college attatched to it .

Now the expenses for seting up a medical college .

Well it is not so much of the money involved in setting up thebuilding , but the running costs .Being run by govt. there was very poor funding .I remember in my days the total amt. received for Dow along with civil hospital was only 8 lakhs [Rupees ]. The fee we had to pay was so nominal, rs. 18/ month. can u imagine !! so there was no help from the tuition fee for running expenses .

In those 8 lakhs , the following expenses had to be met .

-Payment of all the professors salaries [ including the ones at the college and the hospital]

- payment of the paramedical staff`s salaries , along with the supporting staff at the college , like the librarians , sweepers , lab technicians etc.

- payment of electricity, telephone bills, and similar expenditures .

- dhobee expenses .

YOU CAN IMAGINE CIVIL HOSPITAL WAS A 1300 BEDDED HOSPITAL, so the turn out of daily laundry , esp. as everything had to be so carefully sterilised . [FROM BEDSHEETS AND PILLOW COVERS , TO SURGICAL ATTIRES , MASKS , CAPS , ETC.

- cost of free medicines handed out in the wards and the Out patients depts. on a daily basis.

- cost of running the operation theatres ,labs, ER, Radiology , in short all the depts .

So in medical colleges it is the ratio of funding by the govt. Vs maintainance costs which really chew up the system. A large deficit has always been there .So in short the set up may be a one time affair , but to keep it going is another story.

I hope some things are clearer now .You are obviously comparing a medical college in Pakistan to the other IT institutes. Mind you the IT institutes to name a few like , IBA[ in karachi ] , Lums ,Fast etc. have a hefty tuition fee which probably helps a lot in funding of the colleges .

I hope i have made things somewhat clearer to you now !

As far as the ‘grievous injury ‘ is concerned:

Chowk has a disclaimer at the bottom of the page for just such an eventuality:

The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and not necessarily the views of the staff and management of Chowk.
Further to this I would add: this badmash temporal is a figment of imagination only. he would like to, but in reality he does not exist:)

And that leaves Mahajirzadeh. Well you can sue him. In fact he is looking for a rishta. We have it from the horses mouth. What is your fees? And he still has that Ponti!

regards, (or can I get away with --love?)

Interesting, Bina. I am still trying to decide how much I like it, especially when compared to your other writings here. I do like it.

BTW, can I read the Good Wife? Pretty please!

Shirin Ahmad: Thanks for the reply. I was actually wondering and trying to figure out how many total medical colleges there are in Pakistan, since I don`t know for sure. Hence the question.

I would have to assume that the cost of running a medical college in any country, and setting one up, is far higher than setting up an IT university. I am sure it is so here in North America. Medical College tuitions are far higher than Engineering college tuitions in the USA. I wonder how difficult it would be for the Pakistan govt. to set up as many IT universities as medical colleges.

I`ve seen quite a few family friends who struggled to pass the USMLE while juggling duties at home and children. One lady moved to a different state because she couldn`t match into a residency in the hospital her husband was in. But then, kuch paanay kay liye kuch khona parta hai. In the long run, all the hard work pays off. I just hope these doctors use some of their good fortunes and hard work to help Pakistan and Pakistanis. That would truly be something.
