Great ending. Really appreciated your description of the taunting of Ahmedis and the way all of us have ended up in the West with our memories, and at least in your case, some old friends. Well done.

Urstruly (#41):
[“Your posts are not always easy to answer; because you really know how to ask questions.”]
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Anyway, I would like to say your post where you clarified the evolution of the story revealed a very modest persona. But, then, I always knew that!
Hey, thanks for commenting on my poem. Now it is my turn to wonder why you are asking difficult questions. The only reason I am getting into a discussion about my ‘thing’ here is because it has a lot to do with your story and your comments, or else I would have duly respected your space. I have to make one confession: This poem was written immediately after reading your story. (Now don’t bang your head against the screen again!) Look, I agree with most of what you say regarding love – higher plane, evolving, etc…but you have put me into deep mushkil when you say, “It is not the person who gives your life a meaning; it is the love that gives your life a meaning. So if you have met someone even for once who has given a new dimension to your life, it was love. Be thankful to Him that He considered you worthy of it.” So, for the sake of argument, which your teacher would approve of, if one has got the benediction of a Him (why the capitalized Him – is he god?), then should one disregard the person and concentrate on the love? When I said “a sharp enough blade” it was metaphorical…the cutting edge of love, the finality of it, which is worrying and yet gives it a wonderful conclusion. In story-telling terms, a climax. Which is why I would have preferred if your story had ended with Rabia locking eyes with the protagonist…bringing in the young handsome couple was a bit family-album like. It took away from the grand sweep of the “stupidity” that we all manifest so unashamedly! Bu, heck, this is your creation and the heart has its reasons….
[“If it really was love, you will never ever think of hating your life. If it really was love how come you ended up hating (you).”]
Love has different faces. Take your own character Sami. Does he not hate himself? Yet, is he not in love? One does not hate life, but bits of it, especially when one becomes introspective. The wrists, for me at least, symbolise life looking for its pulse.
Enough said…and call me Farzana [although pyaar se log mujhe b.i.t.c.h bhi kehte hain. But that is big-time love:)]

Sadaf : Ull like this piece i got on email the other day :
Why we women must save civilization from Men`s egos....
Ok women we all know a couple hundred (thousand) men who have huge egos, and if there is one pet pive (really irks me and just makes me want to tear their head off) is a man`s ego. And this is what is killing civilization. You see Men`s ego tend to get bigger and bigger, taking up space, and when it swells and takes up space , the pressure of the swelling ego pushes everything aside and when their is no more room to swell it crushes everything in it`s path. When you put more men together, they take up even more space, and the swell and swell until they start suffocating us women, and they crush everything in their(swelling egos) path and eventually the egos will get so big it will destroy everything, and in the end it will finally crush all of civilization, and that is what we women must stop. Whenever and wherever you can, women, crush a guys ego, you could be saving thousands of lives....
Urstruly: While reunite with old beloveds in the new haven for desi haven, Canada; u got me reunited with me beloved niece right here on the pc. thanks to yr piece. :)

You have quite a good grasp of storytelling.
Just too long to read in one sitting.

hi sadaf,
i think those who have been the other woman can relate to the parveen shakir duaa thingie, no one else. Which makes almost all the women, if u think abt it.Therefore the empathy.
And prayer is symbolic to wishing her well,
after she hopefully gets rid of her from her mans life? May the best woman win?
I dont think ill be praying for the other woman tho, unless i knew her and thot her to be an honest-to-goodness nice person. Would you? Regardless?
i think men do give a darn abt the other guy
they just express it different. A bad-duaa, maybe?
Big egos? Object? The 90s are over.Move on! Itna nahi sochte! jo hoowa woh hoowa, jaane do..
zehra - niece dear, hellooo??? how r ya?

Ali Haroon:
``incidentally, i am at a loss to understand why so many ladies present found this to be a ``sweet`` piece. o heartless sex!``
well.. I can`t speak for all the ladies, but I`ll defend my comment. Love by definition is sweet, it can be bitter-sweet at times, but sweet nevertheless. If it leaves someone bitter, then it wasn`t real love. In this story, for sure many hearts got broken but there was no bitterness at the end because all emotions were pure, and hence sweet. :)

Being a pure techie with nil creative skills, I am not going to try to guess what happens at the door. Only you can complete your story. But I did start thinking about Rabia and Fozia.
It has always interested me how women feel towards and deal with the ``other woman``. It could be the mistress, and wife relationship. It could be the ``saotan`` relationship. Or the relationship beteen the ex and the current, etc. These relationships are very different than the male counterparts. Eg, in some of her poems, Parveen Shakir wishes the ``other woman`` well, or prays for her because she can see herself in the other woman, or can empathize with her. No man would ever do that.
Why do you think that is? Apart from the fact that men have huge egos and they think of the love of a woman as an object to be possessed.

:) No, I am past that age. So, in the spirit of spring, you are forgiven. :)

Reading this ``interesting`` story reminded me of one of my favorites. ``Look Away - by Chicago 19``

Ms. Versey
Your posts are not always easy to answer; because you really know how to ask questions.
I have two comments on your poem. First, I don’t think love ever is as cruel and sharp as a blade. If you had found it like that then I assure you it wasn’t love. Love is something that elevates your soul to a higher level and it gives a meaning to your life. It helps you evolve and not to devolve. It helps you to generate happiness and fulfillment and not to degenerate you into a failure. It is not the person who gives your life a meaning; it is the love that gives your life a meaning. So if you have met someone even for once who has given a new dimension to your life, it was love. Be thankful to Him that He considered you worthy of it.
Now the second comment is. Ladies! What the hell is wrong with all of you. All of you either want to hang themselves or cut their wrists. Now that is depressing. (I just banged my head on the screen.). Why have such a bleak outlook on life? What hurts me more is the fact that almost always such feelings are associated with love. You have to ask yourselves these questions: If it really was love, you will never ever think of hating your life. If it really was love how come you ended up hating (you).
