Shankar # 221:

``Yes & no. According to Freud, human sexual ``instinct`` has both homo & hetero sexual components. The homosexual instinct is too threatening to the ego & is converted into socially acceptable behavior like male ``bonding``--eg, ``going out with the guys for a beer``. Its called ``sublimation`` or a mature defense mechanism.

The ones who are pathologically threatened by it, utilise an ``immature defense`` called ``reaction formation``--ie they become blatant & (sometimes militant) homophobes. If a guy becomes very friendly with another guy; he is instantly branded as ``gay``.

Immature guys utilise ``reaction formation``. Hence the knee jerk reaction to a statement ``kiss my butt``. Once they stop having wet dreams (esp about Pakistani women) & form healthy heterosexual relationships; they grow out of that immaturity.``

So, which one of the above three explainations was applicable to YOU when you called Vajpayee a homo in couple of your posts earlier?

Or scout may be right (``From a psychological standpoint, isn`t it true that people who go abouts calling others gay are actually in the closet homosexuals themselves?``).

tahmed321:

``I can only warn that the forces of extremism are much closer to the power centers in ndia ...than most Indians probably realize (see article on Advani in the latest Economist for example``

Advani is the last person you should worry about Mr. T. Just prey that Sonia won`t become the PM. She will be Pakistan`s worst nightmare ... she would want to be a super patriot (to win elections), when she hits back at pakistan (to win elections) the world will look at it as democratic India hitting back rather than a Hindu-mustlim thing like it is viewd right now and finally she will have lot of sympathatic ears in western capitals. The moment the mushys (Musshaarraf and Mushahid Hussain?) brandish nuclear weapons, The Pope will be in town (literally) and guess whose side he will be on? Pakistan will be Saddamized (Shankar don`t get any ideas).

Re: shrinker

``Yeah right! Once in a blue moon & that too years ago.``

There`s some mandatory level of criticism I need to fulfill? When I see something that needs criticising, I`ll do it (and certainly not to please someone...like you do).

``Guess which Indians you pick fights with?--Farzana, studebaker & I.``

Farzana has seious issues. Don`t drag her into this. I can`t even understand what studebaker writes.

``Sigh..20-somethings! More brawn than brains..testesterone running wild..looking for an outlet to take out your anger.``

You seem to use more perverted language than the 20-somethings here.

tahmed321 exposed again:

In # 189, tahmed says:

``I can only warn that the forces of extremism are much closer to the power centers in India than most Indians probably realize (see article on Advani in the latest Economist for example``

BUT HERE IS WHAT ECONOMIST ACTUALLY SAYS:

``But most Hindus were repelled by the destruction of the mosque in 1992. They voted the BJP out of power in three major north Indian states in the 1993 state elections, including Uttar Pradesh, the state in which Ayodhya lies. This showed that, though extremism had enabled the BJP to achieve critical mass, it had also become an obstacle to it attaining power in New Delhi.``

I am sorry to say this but you seem to lack basic understanding of India and Indian politics. Try some thing new for a change before you mascarade as `know all`, reasonable person (which I don`t think you are purely based on your ability draw conclusions the way you did based on the Economist article). Write a short essay on why BJP is in power using the following words: Vajpayee, Kargil, Sonia Gandhi, Jayalalitha, Chandrababu Naidu and George Fernades. Hint: They are in decreasing order of importance.

OR, why bother just go pretending like a `learned person`.

BTW, I read that article before I saw it referred by you ... perplexed by the context though.

In a country that trashes its constitution everytime one its pot-bellied generals sneezes, you are talking about provisions in the law.

Carboload #248, ``When are you going back? You sound like a true leader. Why wait if you are waiting. What are you waiting for? Safer conditions, things to get better, more suitable for your leadership style? Go now. ``

I`m still a poor student. If you have money to buy me a ticket, I will go. I`m waiting to graduate and make some money of my own and then go (not forever, because i believe i can make more money here and channel it to do some good in Pakistan).

``Pakistan secretly funded my education. Pakistan secretly funded the education of so many expats., it`s mind boggling.``

WHATTTTT are you talking about?

``What does affluence got to do with Pakistan falling deeper and deeper into debt and poverty?``

It has a lot to do with Pakistan`s current state.

If all of these filthy rich expatriates gave up one Mercedes each and made a school or hospital in a rural region of Pakistan, we could get somewhere. Have you ever thought of that? Money rules the world, my friend, and it can make a lot of difference to a poor country.

`` Where are the WE for the daily victims of the car jacking, murders and rapes?!``

And where are WE when we leave and never look back? Is that any better? Turning a blind eye towards our own people?

``No demand for health care professionals anywhere?! HORROR!!!!!!!``

Where the hell did I say there`s no need for health care professionals, I merely pointed out that the US has enough graduates of it`s own medical schools, taht it`s getting more and more difficult for FMG`s go get jobs.

Now relax and chill out.

Zahid:

Your hue-and-cry raised a mixed reaction.

Being a citizen of Pakistan, you have valid concerns regarding the system in which you are living and breathing - and obviously you want to explore what`s out there for you.

On the other hand, you are moving ahead in life; you do not need to find flaws in your system in order to proceed. Had the system been perfect, you would still have pursued with your plans. It`s not 100% the anarchy in your system that`s motivating you to move ahead. Your own desire to progress also kicks in here. And you do not need to be guilty for that.

I`ll agree with Shireen Ahmed that life is not a bed of roses across the Atlantic, but I would add a few positive points(in favor of crossing the Atlantic)here that should serve as morale boosters:

a)Life has some value outside of our dear country;
b)Living beings are well rewarded for their talents;
c)Hardwork and Intelligence are considered as attributes worth acknowledging;
d)A system with some accountability exists;
e)You can chalk out the direction of your future`s path;
f)You can plan your life - Well, no doubt man proposes and God disposes; but still there is some outline that you can draw. Due to that, your success is very much in your own hands; and
g)Being an independent professional, you learn far more about the realm of life than you would, while living at home. It`s worth taking the plunge!

I will also agree with Shireen that you should take it step by step rather than taking a wild jump. You cannot foresee what will happen or what steps you will take down the road in the next 5-6 years.

I recently met a young couple[late 30s/early 40s] who has been here for over 15 years or so and have their families well-settled in the East Coast, but they are moving back to Lahore. The guy[early 40s] has finished his fellowship and etc(in Medicine) and he and his friends are moving back next month to start a practice together. This couple has two young kids(2 and 6 year old). It was a pleasant surprise to see them so clearheaded - no ifs and buts. Thought of giving you another scenario.

Lastly, this article carried an interesting touch and can be viewed from two different perspectives, as I mentioned earlier. But what`s really important is that it can serve as a great eye-opener for the current government to understand the issues faced by our professional youth. Probably, before your leave you should submit this to Dawn as well as to a few Ministers who are seriously looking into reengineering the current system. I really mean it! :)

Best Wishes and Good Luck!

A Practical Approach!

[There is nothing wrong with coming to the US or somewhere else to gain financial stability and a quality education.]

Absolutely!

[But there is definitely something wrong with leaving your country with the attitude of giving up on it.]

Why?

[That`s quite shameful if you ask me. Pakistan has tons of problems and the last thing that we need is young educated folks running away

forever and not looking back.]

When are you going back? You sound like a true leader. Why wait if you are waiting. What are you waiting for? Safer conditions, things to get

better, more suitable for your leadership style? Go now.

[Go ahead, make something of yourself in the US. Make lots of money and give some back to Pakistan.]

Pakistan secretly funded my education. Pakistan secretly funded the education of so many expats., it`s mind boggling. When I was attending

university, I used to find pickle jars with wads of cash in them at my door step. The jar used to have a note that read, ``From Pakistan, with love``.

[Don`t become one of the thousands of Pakistani American doctors sporting a dozen Mercedes while their country falls deeper and deeper into debt and poverty.]

Nothing wrong with owning a fleet of mercs. What does affluence got to do with Pakistan falling deeper and deeper into debt and poverty?

Would giving up expensive cars change antyhing? What would it change?

[Think of WE as apposed to ME.]

We? Let`s see who are these ``WE``:

Policticians?

Thunder squads?

Thugs?

Police?

Bearucrats (sp?)?

Working class?

Rural populace?

Armed forces?

Your teenage neighbor`s body is found in a hospital, you read news of a girl getting gang raped, you get car jacked, that is the ``WE`` you

see! What we? In a society where invidual`s life, property and family are not safe, what WE are you talking about?! Where are the WE for the daily victims of the car jacking, murders and rapes?!

[By the way, good luck finding a good job after your residency in the US. Unless you`re a genius, the US health care system is making it harder and harder for foreign doctors to find good positions.]

Yup, geniuses make the world go. There is no hope, zip, nada, for average run of the mill folks! Not just in states but every where

else in the world! Good Lord`s Earth is teeming with (run of the mill) health care professionals! So much so, there is NO demand anywhere, at all!! What is this world coming to? No demand for health care professionals anywhere?! HORROR!!!!!!!

Genius or no genius, doctor sahib seem bright enough to think for himself.

I commend doctor sahib for writing this piece and leaving the country. A country that has such lawlessness and apathy, deserves to be

left - the ULTIMATE PROTEST!!!!

Bon Voyage!

Re: Height of frustration

I found this in Hindustan Times today. The URL:

http://www.hindustantimes.com/nonfram/100801/detfro04.asp.

``Pak boy held for hoisting Indian flag

Mubashir Zaidi

Islamabad, August 9

A PAKISTANI teenager was arrested by the Islamabad police for hoisting the Indian flag on the roof of his house and for chanting pro-India slogans.

A police official in Islamabad said that the boy arrested is Ibrar Ahmed, 18, a computer science student and a resident of Sector 3 of Khayaban-i-Sir Syed colony in the Pakistani capital. ``I love India and hate Pakistan,`` the youth went on even as he was being dragged away by the police.

During investigations, Ibrar Ahmed told the police that he did not work for any Indian agency but that he loved India and hated Pakistan.

However, where Ibrar got the flag from is still a mystery. Intelligence agencies have started interrogating the boy as they suspect he might have connections with an Indian agency.

The police, however, doubt it and say that the boy hoisted the Indian flag out of sheer frustration. According to the police, the boy has committed a serious crime and would be tried for high treason, which is punishable by death in Pakistan.

Interestingly, there is no provision in Pakistani law under which the boy could be tried. He is currently booked under the Maintenance of Public Order and the police are consulting their legal wing to find out under which provisions the boy could be booked.

Ibrar`s family members said that he was depressed with injustice in Pakistani society. His elder brother was falsely implicated by the police on drug trafficking charges and was put in jail by the police after the family refused to bribe the police.

But police officials claim that Ibrar`s brother is a known drug trafficker.

This is the first incident in Pakistan where a person has been arrested for hoisting the Indian flag.``
