``Misunderstanding, not mistake``
In this case, misunderstanding = euphemism for mistake. But you know that already, so it`s fine.

``and this time around, given the pressures on the military, I think the politicians will be back within the year``
......... but who are the politicians and what will they be coming back to ? ..... it is nice to be an optimist, but we are in for another experiment that is doomed to fail .......have you checked to see who are the people who got elected as nazims and naib nazims ? .... in our area it was the corps commander`s brother, but that really doesn`t make a difference because under the proposed structure the nazims will be answerable to the corps commanders anyway, and the president will have the right to sack the pm, the parliament and the stable-boys that sit on the supreme court bench ..........
........ and what happens if musharraf dies a mysterious death or leaves office after five years? ..... is the then coas going to move into the presidency or is musharraf going to find another tarrar ? .......... it is a cruel sham and we know it all ........ it is silly to even begin to compare pakistan with india, a country that has been moving in the right direction for decades ........ our future is dark and bleak - at the best we can hope for another bloodless coup in ten years ......... but more than likely we will see a general nasir javed or general abbasi take over with a mullah lounging in every office in the secretariat and a dead body hanging from every pole on constitution avenue .......it is kismet ......

very interesting......but i have a bizarre insight of my own if u don`t mind...
I totally agree with u about all those things u have just said about our country.....its frightfully true.....but my concern is if all educated people like u and others start leaving this country what future do we have....i ask u my friend....what is a country?its just a territory of a nation..a State.....we the people of a country can make or break it.......Its just our bad luck that we never had an honest leader....a leader who would have helped this country progress instead of bankrupting it.
I tell u I love this country.....i know what u all are thinking right now.....i know what its like living in the west.....i know all the pros and cons.....but for me personally i think when it comes to living in the East Vs living in the west the difference is incremental.....i prefer to live like a 1st class citizen in this country rather then a 2nd class citizen in some other.
Yes we get better jobs over there.......life is very convenient.....i know sounds very ridiculous but is everything about money these days?what about the other small small things which are also important.
what about culture?
Do u happen to like the western culture?maybe u do.....but i don`t......i will tell u some of the things which i don`t like about the western culture...i dislike it coz it`s based on competetion.....everyone is competing against each other.....so no one has time for anyone else......i hate the fact that a 15 year old kid has to dress up like a slut only coz she wants to have a boyfriend.... i hate the fact that kids have no respect for their parents....that as soon as they are married they absolutely want to have nothing to do with their parents.....the fact that a son does not give a damn that his parents are old now and that they need him.The strong family ties that are present in our society are totally absent there.Nobody is truly your friend.....i chatted with a pakistani girl living in America a little time back....it was really interesting....she told me she has a boyfriend.....but she is sleeping with someone else....so i asked her if she thought what she was doing was right from the ethical point of view ....but she was not concerned....she was not even a little bit guilty.
You must be thinking why i am comparing cultural differences..... why i am bringing culture in too this...i am doing it because you seem to be concerned about your kids ...what will your child think when he will grow up in THAT environment.Don`t u think that is going to effect your kids as well?
Yes right now things don`t look very promising.....but if one by one all of us leave this country then what will happen in the future?
Everybody has the right for a better life and nobody has the right to accuse you of anything because u r not doing anything wrong but i am concerned because every thing and everyone i care about is somehow connected to this country and as a citizen of Pakistan i feel its my duty to contribute in everyway i can....and i think the biggest way we ALL can help is if after completing our education we stay here and bear the hardships ,only then our country can progress towards prosperity.

Dear author,
You say : ``In the meantime, public money has gone into debt servicing, defense and bank accounts in Switzerland. Money spent on the emigrating youth?s education? None whatsoever.``
Depends on where the emigrating youth are headed for. Mr. Hoodbhoy just doesnot know how to ask.

shammi #325 Thanks for providing some further insights to the manner in which the Indian party system works. I get the impression that it is not that much more democratic internally than Pakistan. I recall reading many years ago how Indira was put up for prime ministership by the Congress politicians who thought she would be a figurehead while they would wield real power - she surprised them by shooing them off the scene and taking control.
I agree that over time this can evolve into true inner party democracy - This I understand is how things evolved in the US: Until the early 20th century, party nominees were picked in the ``smoke filled backrooms`` and inner party democracy is a relatively recent phenomenon. Nevertheless, there is no reason why we should not start demanding inner party democracy in these parties in India as wel as in Pakistan. While this may seem a bit ambitous given that we have martial law in Pakistan, I dont think it is too early to start thinking about how a more accountable and effective system of government should be set up once the politicians are back (and this time around, given the pressures on the military, I think the politicians will be back within the year).

``Don`t you think Gowardhan is as much a ``bleating bakra`` (your words) as YLH....check him and jay out, throwing their mud around every board on Chowk.
So why are you going soft on him? And you accuse Pakistanis of the same.``
I know he`s being a bleating bakra! That`s why I asked him to ``chill out`` several posts ago.
``Being a hypocrite again?``
Clearly not.
Awaiting your apology,

I am not asking him to chill because he admitted a mistake...I think I posted that before he admitted anything. Anyway, I asked him to chill because he got all huffy puffy as soon as Madani started posting.

Gowardhan #315 One more thing, even if this had been a real Pakistani, I hope you would have still have focussed on the individual poster only and not all Pakistanis (and perhaps even made this distinction explicit). Hate-mongers exist in every society, and no society has more than a small percentage of these individuals. Only by reminding ourselves of this, and only by seeing individual posters on chowk as representing only themselves, and not India or Pakistan or this religious group or that ethnic group (which is typically the way a hate-monger looks at things) can we prevent ourselves from slipping down the same slope and into the same stagnant ditch as these individuals have already done.
Thanks again for your post.
