``Yeah right! Once in a blue moon & that too years ago.``
There`s some mandatory level of criticism I need to fulfill? When I see something that needs criticising, I`ll do it (and certainly not to please someone...like you do).]
The shrink went to med school on a quota. Obviously he wants to see a quota on criticism. He thinks you should criticize India in 50% of the posts and Pakistan in the other 50% per Mandal Commission Report.
Remember the time when he complained about suffereing discrimination in India when he made the claims about his dad, his brother, himself, etc., being doctors? If that is indeed the case, where did he suffer discrimination? I think he is a certifiable, if not certified, loon.

``... the forces of extremism are much closer to the power centers in India than most Indians probably realize ...``
If by that, you mean that Advani is closer to power than most realize, and if true then indeed, it would be a cause of great concern. A recent poll published by India Today (http://www.thenewspapertoday.com/specials/pm1.html) suggests that Advani`s popularity has DOUBLED since Jan, `01 -- from a modest 1% to a grandiose 2%!! (This was in response to a question -- who would be India`s best PM?)
Now, if you limit the list of aspirants to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) sans Vajpayee and remove any Opposition contenders, then Advani`s appeal rises to 26%. Still not enough to become PM.
The same poll finds that Indians are least concerned about national security (7%), but most about inflation (38%), unemployment (34%), corruption (12%) -- somewhat along the lines that I myself would think as being a reasonable order of priority.
Statistics apart, the rise of a leader who speaks to a parochial power base will portend ill for India.

I would like to add to the writers gripes about Pakistan .How can anyone live in a country where ..close relations of a Agha Khan Doctor..(a doctor , from the frontier tribal areas and desperate to leave and bitter with his country ) ..are involved (along with a distinguished group of sleaze balls in Peshawar) in large scale credit card fraud , bribing custom and post office officals in the process .
One where a local law enforcement agency cracks down on the fraud .The chief minister thouh orders them to backdown ..agreeing on limited confesions and small fines without any criminal cases or jail terms ..as he did not wish to destroy their lives and educational careers .
The thiefs rewarded the compassion of the chief minister by spreading stories that they had bribed officers to leave them alone .The lead distinguished fraudster ..has now happily for himself relocated to the US ..
Now I wonder ..amidst all the gripin about pakistan ..would this close relation or his friends be able to get away with this in the USA?.

Gowardhan,
Those were the author`s quotes not mine. Anyway, my intention in pasting this article was to show that it is easy for the youth to be frustrated. It is these very young men who, when they do not find jobs, find jehad a lucrative alternative.
Even though India has a constitution, not everything in the constitution is followed to the letter. Caste based killings continue to occur. The recent hanging of a couple whose only fault was they were in love but were from different castes makes me hang my head in shame. These should not be happening in a democratic India. So, what do we do. We need to realise that our battles are not with people but with ideologies. Even while hating the British Imperialism, Gandhiji did not hate the British. Our problem with Pakistan arises out of differing ideologies. I never consider Pakistanis as my enemies. Only enemy is a system which thrives on anti-India hatred and whose only beneficiaries are the jehadis and the Pakistani army. I also hate the caste system India and all its ills. My only hope is that as the downtrodden become more aware of their rights, they will become more politically active. Their empowerment at local and state levels is the only way out.

It is amazing to see the number of replies my article has generated. I am both flattered and puzzled, both by the quantity and content of the posts.
Having been in the US just a week or so, I have learnt so much already. To those who wrote rabid replies to my article, I say with the utmost respect (using part of my newly expanded vocabulary): Bite me! :)
No, seriously, I respect everybody`s opinion but I do, of course, reserve the right to differ. The title of my article is a statement, not a question. And I wrote it only in the hope that somebody in power will take note of it. Dragging Pakistan through the mud was no enjoyable experience but whats got to be done has got to be done.
Having read 275 replies in less than 2 hours I will try to address whatever issues raised in the posts that I can remember. I did submit this article to Dawn but never heard from them. I do have a life. I am a real Afridi, and from Darra Adam Khel to boot (psst... want a 20mm Mortar real cheap? I`ll even have it delivered for no extra charge). And this is NOT about India vs. Pakistan. When will the crowd at chowk stop bickering about Indo-Pakistan issues? I say give them Kashmir, slash defence spending and concentrate on schools and hospitals. The `bomb` will not improve the standard of living of our populace. What is good governance all about? First we need to get our priorities straight, right?
Am I making any sense?

Adnan Sami and people of his kind may find India more attractive.
Dawood Ibrahim,Abu Salem and many more of this genre find Pakistan safer.
Different people have different reasons for leaving. Future of Pakistan is brighter,
with more gun powder and more like-minded people assembling in the holy land.
