``The failure of Pakistan`s public school system``
Substitute the word `India` for `Pakistan` throughout in the story, and it will still ring true. Our countries will remain poorer than sub-Saharan Africa as long as we do not provide quality education to all

Musharraf bans two terrorist organizations. Hopefully ban is real even if Musharraf himself just talk.

It would help to look into who starts attacking others` leader on this board first.
I agree with the rest of the article... indeed this is the real Jehad. Thankyou for giving us a direction oriented article

Shammi,

I think Jehad starts at Criple C1, one`s own self. Win C1, and C2-C4 will show the white flag without firing a shot. Here is the Art of Jehad at Criple C1:
1. Declare Jehad on Bad Breath. If bad breath, launch a first strike with floss and paste.
2. Declare Jehad on Poor Body (naked, before mirror). If fat and/or flabby, yell Allahu Akbar storm around the neighborhood until pounds disappear (remember to put on clothes first, or else you will be taken POW by men in white clothes). If skinny, on the other hand, then yell Allahu Akbar and perform blitzkrieg on food.
3. Declare Jehad on Poor Manners:
(a) InsultingWomenism: If you get urge insult women (in any of million ways known to South Asian youth, including reminding them of their duty as muslim women to hide there faces, including pinching body parts of women in crowded bazaars, including simply staring at them), grab your throat and wrestle yourself to the ground and slap face until urge disappears.
(b) Making a Mess: If you get urge to toss garbage on street or jump out of line or do any of a zillion things you would never think of doing in the west but is no problem back home: Give yourself a guerilla kick and win the Battle for Civilization.
(c) Braggartism: If you find yourself proclaiming the superiority of your country, religion, race, morality, and so forth on chowk or anywhere else, launch missile attack and destroy the enemy before it reduces you to being a big mouth.
4. Destroy Irrationalism: I could go on, but you get the drift.
And so forth. Once you have won these battles with Enemy Number One (your own weaknesses), Criples 2, 3, and so on will get fixed.
PS These are tactics to complete the training of the youth on chowk, with strategy being provided by Temporal in the article.

Great article! Begin with oneself - easier said than done, but then what other option is there?

temporal mian
........... i am deeply offended by the title of this otherwise innocuous piece ....... the word jihad or jehad is at the root of the the problems that beset the muslim world - that, and the word inshallah ......why do we have to invoke god and religion to do something which we can accomplish by employing common horse-sense and giving it the best human effort possible ........ these words are anathema to both horse-sense and humanity ........
........ for a man who has chosen to shun divinity, you sure have fallen to the level of angles, jinns and hobgoblins .......
in any case, my best regards ......

The UN-Real Jehad.
Hobbyty,a proud muslim just informed us on another board that:
``Pakistani flags being hoisted & flown all over IO
Kashmir``
The 700000 bajrang dal is keeping itself busy chasing the flags.
(details on Krtika board)#540

Let the limp-wristed liberals weep.Maybe they have another golden opportunity to drown their sorrows in pissyfrothy beer or maggot-excreted merlot(which it really is).

It seems that SOME us are unable to think OUTSIDE of the box...
Often the best way to do this is to look within oneself (C1?) for it is at this point when such SILLY and BASIC ideas such as Alignment disappear.
For some reason people are afraid of standing ALONE, they find strength via aligning themselves with others on the basis of Race, religion, language or whatever. Then they waste their time by trying to rationalize their weaknesses (racism, nationalism etc)...
Who cares what your religions and languages are?
Get over your foolish human-made divisions and see the big picture (C1!)...
Hamid: Jihad doesnt invoke God or religion, the word Means struggle, your assumptions invoke the rest.
Uqab: Do all your classmates idolize the british?

``I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.``
-- Khalil Gibran
Another tactic for fighting ``C1 Jehad``.

At the dargah at Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi one day a few moons ago there was an excellent real life case study discourse on how jehad can lead to jahanum or janat . . . choice is totally human . . . the example of a janat based jehad was that of the Bahai religion . . . in the Islamic context, the example provided was of Iran where people may disagree but a sort of janat is emerging after decades of jehad . . .

Birth control and education as jehad or common sense are like two fruit-bearing plants. The plants require optimum conditions to grow. We must discuss about the optimum conditons and the common sense or ingeneous approaches to expediate the growth. Additonally we must concentrate on those species of these two plants which bear more fruit or more pertinent to fast evolving rational world. Consider the following news item from BBC:
Indian scientists criticise Vedic studies
[Leading scientists and mathematicians in India have strongly criticised government proposals to introduce ancient - or Vedic - mathematics and astrology as academic subjects in schools and colleges.
They said the proposals would condemn students who are dependent on state-funded schools and colleges to a sub-standard education.
They said there wasn`t enough evidence to prove the existence of Vedic mathematics, and astrology was a matter of belief, rather than a science.
From the newsroom of the BBC World Service ]
Should we say same thing in Pakistan with respect to our ancient speculative scientific knowledge that is already written down and believed to be absolutely true? Should studies in such subjects be considered education at all?
You only cross C1 to C2 and so on if the potential barriers to crossing are passable. The barriers to excel from C1 to C8 in practical terms are no ramparts of clay. They are fortified through ages with the help of you know what. Ours is, unfortunately, inferior model to that of confusius, Tao or Vedanta. Our model does not allow leap frogging or tunneling through barriers. Our model subscribe to tearing down barriers through active participation and determination (Iqbal`s philosophy). You must pass through ``aag ka darya`` or dar-ul-har`b if it necessitates.
Yes, birth control and education must be the top priorites and conditions must be created to achieve these ends-conditions of watering, fertilizing, weeding out, ploughing-only then can we reap the bounty of the crop. All of this require common sense and not belief system.

TEMPORAL MULLAH,
Pakistan being an islamic country has to rely on some form of religious mandate to proceed ahead. At present the religion is interpreted only by the mullah, total disregard for any temporal adjustment. It is the same notion that wealth will be brought by the marauding hordes propelled by the jihadic fires. There is need for alternate interpretations to suit the changing times.
In the pakistani political discourse, the only bulwark against the book is one speach by Jinnah which at present more dogeared than the book itself. There is also the problem of why the people of today should listen to an ordinary persons dream even though he sipped a lot of third rate sherry.
The need of the hour is alternate interpretation, even though it could be a fatwable offence.

jay

FROG IN THE WELL
``Just as you would be irritated by others belittling you heroes, others may feel equally offended when you belittle their heroes. This war of words can escalate and, besides being irritable and never satisfactorily resolvable, it is counter productive.``
That is one hell of a great idea, in this day of info revolution I have the right to remain as the frog in the well, the perverted notion of `non-offence` fog should be able to save the frogs from any ray of light from outside.
Jinnah is the greates person who graced this earth. (YLH). Indian women are aneamic (scout). Pak military is the purest (romair). Pak mangos are the best (bina). Islam is the best religion (ali1)
