I fully support Nasah`s plea for lending support to Dr Shaikh, in his ordeal. It is sad that free expression is suppressed by force and people are prevented from thinking their own thoughts.

I`m not grieved if I`m robbed of the use of pen and paper

Because I`ve drowned my fingers in the blood of my heart

It does not matter if my lips are sealed, because I`ve placed

A tongue in every link of my fetter

``Dr. Younis Shaikh, a teacher at a medical college in Islamabad and founder and president of Enlightenment, the Pakistani-based International Humanist and Ethical Union member organization, was sentenced to death for blasphemy by a court in Pakistan on August 18. He has one week to appeal this sentence. (See the New York Times International section Aug. 20, 2001).

Dr. Shaikh was arrested on October 4, 2000, by Islamabad police for allegedly saying that the Prophet Mohammed did not become Muslim until the age of 40 (which was when he received his first revelation) and that his parents were non-Muslims (as they died before Islam was proposed by the Prophet). According to the report in the NYT, ``The Movement for the Finality of the Prophet, well known for pursuing blasphemers, filed a criminal complaint and sent a mob to the college and the local police station, threatening to set them on fire.``

Hundreds of people have been convicted of blasphemy in Pakistan, among them moderate Muslims, Christians and members of other religious minorities. The law they are prosecuted under is extremely ill defined. Frequently, people don`t know beforehand that they are committing an offence. While we do not know if Dr. Shaikh will face execution in the short time allowed for his appeal or whether he will languish in jail, we do know that we must mobilize immediately to bring this travesty to the attention of the world community.

YOUR HELP is urgently needed to bring political pressure to bear on Pakistan to stop the death sentence from being carried out. Protests are being planned in London and Oslo.

PLEASE ACT NOW:

1. If you live in the U.S., please contact the U.S. State Department by calling Sec. Colin Powell at (202) 647-4000 or email him at secretary@state.gov.

2. Contact the President of the United States by calling (202) 456-1414 or email him at president@whitehouse.gov.

3. Contact your U.S. Senators and ask them to contact the State Department to bring pressure to bear.

4. Contact Ambassador Dr. Maleeha Lodhi at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Washington, D.C. at (202) 939-6200 or email her at parepwashington@erols.com.

If you live outside the U.S., please contact the appropriate government agency to call this matter to their attention or see www.iheu.org for further information.``

New Disney comedy fails to amuse Indians

LISA TSERING

e drives an ice cream truck that features such hot-selling flavors as `Mahatma`s Curry Wand`, `Tandoori Delight` and `Monkey God Chutney Treats.` He also heads up a cult, wears a turban (though he`s not a Sikh), and is described as ``Mr Chowdhury, who makes the best ice cream curry this side of Calcutta!``

It seems the character of Pushpak (Brian George) the ice cream vendor in Disney`s new comedy Bubble Boy, pulls out all the stops in its portrayal of an Indian character, but stops just shy of accuracy.

``What I gather is that the character was written by a person with no knowledge of Indians or Hindus whatsoever,`` Gitesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru said.

Bubble Boy follows the exploits of a teenaged boy with an immune deficiency syndrome who travels across the US in a plastic bubble, meeting strange and exotic characters along the way. The film skewers not only Indians but other Asians with an outrageous and irreverent teen attitude.

Usually, such over-the-top humor finds instant favor with teen summer moviegoers, but for some reason Bubble Boy is gasping for air at the box office. Pandya calls it a flat-out flop and points out that it made only $2 million on its opening weekend.

Kirk Honeycutt of the The Hollywood Reporter observed, ``The jokes involving all these caricatures belabor the obvious, focusing, say, ... on the Indian`s veneration of cows. (If you`re going to make jokes about a nation of one billion people, can`t you at least hire an Indian actor and not have him mix up the names of Hindu gods?)``

Actually, actor Brian George is an Indian, and has played Indian characters in an impressive number of projects, including the new film Ghost World, as an Indian bartender in Keeping the Faith, as a guru in Inspector Gadget, on episodes of Seinfeld and other shows. Bubble Boy was written by Ken Daurio and directed by Blair Hayes. Neither George nor a representative of Disney`s Touchstone Pictures could be reached for a comment.

``This is the perfect example of what goes on in Hollywood - passing offstereotypes because they don`t know any better,`` said Pandya. ``They probably thought this was an accurate portrayal of what an Indian person is!``

India next only to Bangladesh in malnourishment

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

India has the dubious distinction of having one-third of her children born with severe malnourishment and the Centre`s target of reducing the infant mortality rate from 90 per thousand to 60 by the year 2000 remains a distant dream even now, according to renowned neo-natalogist Dr S Meharban Singh.

While Pakistan and other south and southeast Asian countries were able to bring down malnourishment among newborns to less than 30 percent, it was over 33 percent in India as against 50 percent in neighbouring Bangladesh.

The situation is very grave, particularly in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajastan, Singh added.

Lamenting that over 50 to 60 percent of the children below the age of five years in the country had stunted growth or malnourishment, he pointed out that the need to improve the health of the girl child

Stating that the widely prevalent discrimination against girl children in the society had to go, Singh said only if the health, nutrition and education of girls were taken care of, the country could progress.

He said undernourishment among children not only affected their physique but also their brain, leading to poor neuro-motor development and higher dropouts from schools.

WHAT A WASTE!!!

News

Immersions leave 175 tons waste

Uma Upadhyay

AROUND 175 metric tons of organic waste are deposited at immersion points in and around Mumbai during the annual Ganesh festival, according to a study by the Jidnyasa Trust.

The trust surveyed at Masunda Lake, Thane, and found that material weighing about 10 per cent of an idol’s weight turns into chemical waste after immersion. Many materials used to make idols can cause extensive environmental damage, the survey said.

Around 2.5 lakh idols are immersed at about 82 points in and around Mumbai. While most statues are small, many are over 10 feet tall. Some are more than 25 feet tall and weigh over 500 kg. Taking an average of 70 kg per idol, each idol generates 7 kg of chemical waste. Thus, 175,000 kg, or 175 metric tons, of chemical waste is deposited annually.

The waste includes organic pigments generated by colour dyes. Maharashtra Ganesh Utsav Maha Mandal president Jayant Salgaonkar said, ‘‘Next year, we will make it compulsory for mandals to use eco-friendly paints.”

The plaster of Paris used to make idols does not dissolve in water. Over the years, the amount of plaster increases in the water, disturbing aquatic life.

Kedar Gore, of the World Wide Fund for Nature, said, ‘‘We clean beaches after immersions. The shores have waste and dead fish.”

Shyam Ghate, of HOPE, said, ‘‘People should use clay and vegetable colours. But making clay idols is costly and time consuming, so people use plaster of Paris.”

Saeed Urrehman,

I have tried to see your earlier poem, but the link does not seem to work. t`s complaint hasn`t worked either.

I liked the imagery of your poem. It well sketched, and bring home home.

I particulalry liked these lines :

father, scared

clutching an old typewriter,

he types almonds, honey, milk.

he climbs the typewriter`s keys

as if they were stairs to reach gods of prosperity

that is nicely converting the a single imagery into an emotional landscape.

moth dust....absolutely brillinat!

The theme hijacked the rest of the poem....i thought...the last three refrans...sounded very good....resolating the end of the wasteland....shanti...shanti...shanti..

Hope you write more often...poetry goes abegging here often...just as in real life.

Harish
