Everything in NYC is currently being shut down.
One of the World Trade Center buildings have completely collapsed. A few surrounding buildings have been affected by the collapsed building`s debris. Many people have been reported to be injured.
The Pentagon has been reported to have sustained three hits. All Federal buildings have been evacuated. A car bomb outside of a Federal building was reported by a Pentagon spokesperson to have exploded. A side of the Pentagon building has collapsed, as just reported.
I can see the smoke from several miles away from NYC. Sirens for the last hour. A local Pacifica station reports that the area around Wall street is totally blanketed with debris. New Yorkers have been asked to stay at home.
The US military has been put on full alert; it has been reported to perceive these strikes as an act of war. All special forces, reserves have been put on standby. The local primary eletions have been cancelled.
One or two of the planes that hit the WTC is reported to be hijacked from a Newark airport.

This is the saddest news... I had the misfortune of watching it on TV ... the collapse of the South Tower atleast...
Pakistani Government should condemn these idiots at once!
May Allah give the United States the strength to overcome this calamity.

This is a surreal experience to see it happen. I sit about 2 miles north of the WTC, on 6th AVe north of Canal STreet and I saw both the buildings collapse.
Since the city is totally shut down, all we can do is sit and look at the mindless damage. My heart goes out to the poor innocent victims. And may the perpetrators rot in hell if there is one. And shame on anyone who is associated with whatever cause is behind the explosions.
At this time, let us reflect on the mindless nature of the violence. What is the purpose of life? What are we here for? What does violence achiece? When will it all end? What gives?

...I believer in capital punishment for heinous crimes...after full and due process of law...and at the same time I abhor any unnecessary waste of life...these attacks are sad...am always saddened by any loss of life...anywhere...whatever the cause...and no am no dithering nincompoop...understand fully the cruel unjust times we live in...but a loss of innocent life is a loss I abhor...be it in karachi, new york, palestine or kashmir...also regardless of whether the perpetrator is an individual, organization or state...
...in this instance two more relevant thoughts come to mind...
...security in US is lax...if one were to believe that at least four planes were hijacked...they talk about the two that hit the world towers, one that crashed in pentagon and the fourth that crashed near camp david, pa...what are the chances of more planes being hijacked?... and succeeding in their missions?...the perpetrators not only had to enter the premises of the airports...enter he planes...overpower the crew...at least two or three in the cockpit...and fly into their target...and the timings...the co-ordination...and one cannot just enter a cockpit and aim the plane at a building or target as if one is driving a car!...
...secondly, taking these plane attacks in conjunction with the Sep. 09 attack in israel by saker hubashi one of a million plus israeli arab...i think this has blown a huge gap and blown bush jr.’s star war strategy to smithereens...while appeasing friends (defence industries) and antagonizing foes (russians) and acting as a world bully and securing air space around us and its allies from terrorist attacks he forgot about a viable deterrent against attacks from within...

One of the planes has been identified as an American Airline Airplane going to L.A..
US military aircraft are in the air and monitoring all airborne aircrafts.
Rdesikan, Yhl, this is not going to bode well for all us South Asian, Muslim, or Arab colored folk as well..I am fearing for the Muslim workers in NYC.

This heinous crime has been perpetrated by the sinful American government against its own people to give bad name to certain other holy and peaceful people.
That is the kind of thinking you will soon hear. The kind of thinking used against India and the Indian government in Kashmir.
Who are are people spreading such thinking? People pretending to be holy and writing big words and long letters.
Wake up to fraud and crime.

A second hijacked plane has crashed in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Apparently there was an initial plane crash near that area, in the early morning.
Reports of suspected follow up attacks.
Yassar Arafat has condemned the attack.
Iraq says it has shot down a second US reconaissance plane.
Iran condemns the US assassination attempt on a Taliban leader.
The local Pacifica station I listen to is asking us not to scratch out the possibility of domestic terrorism.

Ambassador Suna(?) from the Arab League of States
``It is a horrible attack of terrorists...everyone around the world must condemn the attack..we hope those responsible will be caught and punished...we offer our condolences...The Middle East conflict(Israel and Palestine) is a separate issue from what has happened today in the US...As an Arab living in the US, the perpetrators have to be punished otherwise the world will be chaos...dialogue between Israel and Palestine must go on``
Rdesikan, can you offer more firsthand accounting in NYC?

The report of the car bomb outside a Federal building has been unsubstantiated.
Washington DC is being closed down, firefighters throughout the state are being called in.
The entire part of lower Manhattan is being evacuated, Wall street is being shut down.

This is going to be interesting. I wonder who will take responsibility for these actions. I doubt any country will take responsibility. It seems too spread out to be carried out by an internal US group or person like the Oklahoma city bombing.
Which countries/groups are the most angry at the US, at the moment. Iraq, Palestine come to mind.
The cycle of violence and counterviolence, specially against civilians, needs to be stopped. Unfortunately it will not stop until larger and more powerful countries stop bullying smaller and weaker groups and countries. Both groups consider the others` violent actions to be terrorism, and their own to be peaceful. The truth is that both actions are terrorism. Once a person is convinced that it is alright to die for a cause, be it right or wrong, there isn`t much anyone can do to stop him/her. US foreign policy and the US State Dept. (the biggest terrorist organization in the world, in my opinion) has created more than its share of such individuals, in other countries.
The US needs to stop playing the role of the international policeman, and bring its policies in line with those of Canada and Australia etc. It also needs to give equal amount of value to the lives of innocent people in other countries, as it does to its own. It also needs to stop producing, shipping, selling and using more armament than the rest of the world combined.
The countries/groups that carry out terrorist attacks against the US need to held accountable. They need to realize that all their attacks are actually counterproductive to their causes.
This is a good example of the current state of the world, where every group is trying to get its point of view across through violence.
I hope the world takes notice of these terrorist attacks. I hope some kind of severe and successful counteraction is taken against the terrorists. At the same time, I hope the world takes an equal amount of notice of the 7 hours a day the US planes bombed Iraq for months during the Gulf War, the current attacks of US and British planes against Iraq, the killing of innocent civilians in Palestine by Israelis (which would not be possible without US support) etc.
This circle of violence will not be broken until both sides change their policies. My condelensces to all the innocent people on both sides who have become victims of such inhumane acts.
