I read the NYr article. There is no need to have a hissy fit. Articles calling into question the confidence level of Pakistani ``nuclear assets`` have appreared previously in the LA Times and NYT.
LA & NY Times and Hersch`s article have the same point. They are an effort to create in the public mind, a dissonance with the fact that Pakistan has a nuclear capablity.
Now as to who you should believe? For one, Don`t believe anybody except your own reading of any situation. Let`s face it there is a lot of information out there and very little of it is credible, for God`s sake, that`s the reason it`s out there. If it were credible, would it appearing in every newspaper or article?
What makes Hersch credible? The fact that all his quotes are from unnamed or annonomous sources? The fact that he mentions Israelis? Indians? The fact that ISI needs house cleaning? And which intelligence and security organization does not? Do you not find it curious that Hersch`s focus is ISI, which whatever else you may say about it, has produced results for Pakistan, yet Hersch does not ask how and why is it that neither CIA, NSA nor FBI ever had any kind of info about this attack and still to this date does not have any firm evidence? Scape goating and creating psych war environments are not exclusive to Pakistani establishment.
SO, there is no need to become angry, this is a game in which you and I are spectators, observers not real players. I tend not to be impressed by articles by partisan writers, especially, when a pattern has been established.
You may have seen NBC news recently, when a ``expert`` by the name of Steve Emerson made charges against a Florida Professor. This academic, a Muslim and pro Palestinian, ran a charity foundation for Palestinians, has been checked out by the FBI and has a clean Bill, so to speak, yet Emerson, who along with Daniel Pipes has a history of making anti Muslim and pro Israeli pronouncements, was hired as an ``expert`` by NBC and made defamatory charges again on TV.
So, it`s a season, these persons will are in a struggle to effect the direction of US policies, they are partisan, and I tend to take their ``investigations`` and ``scoops`` with a pinch of salt. Should you? let your conscience and reason be your guide.

Aamir,
While indeed Af`tan is quite a big country with difficult terrain, there are 7-8 strongholds. These are the strongholds that US is trying to target in its bombing campaign. What I was suggesting was only for assulting these stronghold. Not for holding on to the territory. The current campaign if i understand right is for destroying Taliban war machine around these strongholds.
I cant quite understand the American tactics. They should have in the first phase concentrated on say Mazar e sharif & herat on the ground without air support. This would forced Taliban to concentrate their forces in these cities by moving in men, arms, ammo into these cities. Once they would have concentrated their effort in defending these cities would have been the right time to lauch the air effort. They should have concentrated on capturing these two cities and then launched their further war effort from these two cities. With air bases inside Af`tan, the presure on Mushharaf on account of allowing American use of its air bases would have decreased.

I spoke with my father yesterday. The Afgahnis are selling metal scrap by the tonnes. In the first three weeks of the American attack the Taliban strategy was to light up lanterns in the open places at night and go hide somewhere else and gather metal scrap the next day. In the daylight they keep away from anything that looks like a square from the skies. So now Americans are using clusters which explode when touched.

I asked a simple question and you are jumping like I have put wasps in your shalwar. I dont understand why you and other Hindus have to prove yourself more loyal than the king. You could have answered the question without insulting me. But since you didnt does it mean that there is something fishy with your claims. I dont need a propaganda website to get an answer. What I need to know is how many jews died on 9/11 and what is their ratio as compared to others. One Hindu, below has told me that he knows at least two jews who are dead. Do you have another number?

Re: Sherdil
Sherdil, I would appreciate if you could confirm or deny this story.
Are the Afghans shipping scrap metal, from the exploded bombs, into Pakistan and selling them in Peshawar?
Secondly, what is the real ground situation in the tribal belt from your vantage point and lastly, what is the exchange rate of the Pakistani rupee versus the American dollar in Peshawar`s kerb market?
I would appreciate any feed back! :)
Ciao

Every time I think that Urstruly cannot utter any more gibberish, guess what, he does!
How any one with half a brain can believe that Mossad informed 4,000 Jews to stay away from the WTC on 9/11 is beyond me. IF Mossad organized the attack, don`t you think that they would have been ruthless enough to sacrifice a few thousand Jews as well, just to make it look good and convince everyone that it couldn`t possibly have been the Israelis who did it? I guess you would actually have to have half a brain to think that far. Confirms what I`ve always thought: religious whackos, irrespective of creed, don`t actually have half a brain!
Anyway, Urstruly, check out the site below and put your asinine dilemmas to rest.
http://slate.msn.com/?id=116813
Oh yeah, the American media is completely controlled by the Jews, so of course this report is a lie. Isn`t Michael whats-his-name of Slate a Jew? See, PROOF!
God preserve us from idiots.

tahmad #295: ``It is interesting how everyone - including the Indian government now it seems, and the vast majority of Pakistanis too - is rooting for Gen Musharraf to stay in power. Who would have believed this two months ago!!``
Some of us have been rooting for Musharraf openly, since day one.
If the known corrupt leaders of PPP and PML can be kept out of power, once the PPP and PML win elections again (which they will), and a somewhat new non-feudal leadership is allowed to rise in these parties (I suppose Aitezaz Ahsan types would be alright), and Musharraf can stay around as an, ``constitutional dictator`` in the post of President, for ten years or so, Pakistan will be a completely different place in a decade.
Those who disagree with me, need to keep in mind, they also disagreed two years ago, when I pointed out that Musharraf was the right person to back.
There is only one thing I am scared of: BB or NS and their close cronies somehow or the other making it back into power. These people and their cronies need a backward Pakistan for their survival. And they will make sure, Pakistan remains backwards.

I don`t think you even bothered to read the NEWYORKER article. Newyorker is a magazine and (obviously) is not the same as NYT.
Here`s Robert Fisk, another indian agent, reporting from pakistan:
http://argument.independent.co.uk/commentators/story.jsp?story=101459
//Of course, we must forget that it was Pakistan`s
Interservices Intelligence (ISI) outfits the
highest ranks of the country`s security agencies
that set up the Taliban, funnelled weapons into
Afghanistan and grew rich on the narcotics trade.
Ever since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in
1979, the ISI has worked alongside the CIA,
funding the mullahs and maulawis now condemned
as the architects of ``world terror``.
Most Pakistanis now realise that the ISI
sanctioned by Washington rather than Pakistan`s
own rulers turned into a well-armed and dangerous
mafia, and while money was poured into its
smuggling activities, Pakistan`s people lacked
education, security and a health service.
No wonder they turned to Islam and the
madrassa schools for food and teaching.//
Maybe someone like Sherdil can tell us if the ISI is not the monster it`s made out to be. Hobbyty is either uninformed or possesses information that virtually no one else does.

Re: Tahmed321
Even Shimon Peres is concerned! In the current crisis, a toppling/debilitation of Musharraf can have unpredictable consequences. Who will succeed him? What will his policy be? Will the nation accept him? War, fundamentalism, terrorism, nuclear weapons are enough to conjure up the the worst case scenarios and can be very sobering indeed.

I read the article you posted by Hersh. He quotes retired Pakistani diplomats too. Doubtless they are all on the RAW payroll.
