NEW DELHI (Dec. 13) - A gunbattle erupted in the Indian parliament complex on Thursday, continuing for at least half an hour, Reuters reporters at the scene said.

A parliamentary official said at least one person was killed and possibly more after shooting erupted around 11.45 a.m. (1:15AM EST) inside the compound of the parliament.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee`s office said Vajpayee was still inside the stately parliament building when the firing began shortly after both houses were adjourned for the day.

Star television news reported five armed intruders inside the parliament. Four had been killed.
