sarwar #2:

``I know couple of Ramji`s in US (dentists in Houston), all Pakistani Muslims. There are so many last names common between Hindus and Muslims.``

I know a Ramji who is Hindu.

Am fascinated by the name of the place RamAllah in Palestine. Anyone know how that name came about?

very interesting. Not being a historian, I have never come across theses incidents in the media thus far.

I have lived in Maharashtra but never really sensed any kind of animosity as a function of caste (after all, it is pretty hard to tell who is what caste). Maybe the locals are more sensitized to this sort of thing. In the 60s I think there was a lot of animosity (in Bombay) towards immigrants (can you say shiv sena?)and in the post stock exchange blasts towards muslims.

I suspect that the violence was generated by the extreme admiration the mahrattas? had for MKG; it didn`t help matters much that the assasin was in fact a brahmin. Wonder if there is a more complete reference to the incidents mentioned in your story.

The places in India where one sees regular reports of caste based incidents/killings are Bihar and eastern UP. Matters of this sort make the news very rarely in other regions (of course there are non-caste based incidents)

I hope that caste relations in India have improved since then. And since Pakistanis do not have this kind of caste friction, they have been busy in religious ``sect friction``.
May all such hatred burn in hell...

Ras
