Rehan Ansari February 11, 2002

Off Buddhas, Institutions, Elite Institutions, and Evil Jinnah`s Evil Ustadi:
Ladies and gentlemen, There is an inherent intolerance that lurks in the hearts and minds of the self-loathing, self-hating, defeatist pseudo-liberals wannabe `southasians` of our country, the chips of the old block on Chowk, which continues to manifest itself in some form or the other. `The worse` is for us to see supposedly (perhaps an enlightenment is in order), but somehow Rehan wants us to ignore the `best`. Rehan Ansari undoubtedly is one of them.
He will continue to speak of the public service that Jamia Milli Islamia provided. But let us face it... would anyone in their right mind send their child to such a school? Indeed education should be the top priority ( Aside: Another one of Jinnah`s mischievious evil Foxy `Ustadis` he left almost all of his wealth to 12 different institutions all over Pakistan and India at the time of his death... perhaps Mr.Ansari`s favorite Gandhian institution was recipient too, I know Aligarh was).
Nevertheless what is wrong with KGS? Or Aitchison? Why must such elite institutions always be maligned by self proclaimed intellectuals and `liberals` like our own Mr. Rehan Ansari, who one can be sure off was brought into his life with a gold spoon in his mouth. These people are usually with an inherent guilt for their previlege. Instead of encouraging others to work hard and achieve what they can, these Modern day `Buddhas` and `Mahatmas` instead want? They want to take public shots at the people of their own previleged position. After all their ultimate role Model, the Buddha Reincarnate of the 20th century was born to a Prime Minister.
The evil ustad that Jinnah was... he was born to a Middle class khoja family whose fortune had been spent by the time he came off age. M.A.Jinnah, the evil Ustad with the Ustadi, was a self made man, who valued financial independence, he looked up challenged the odds, and aspired to be the best and became the best. He was no `Buddha` wannabe. He earned his fortune and encouraged others to do so, and he earned the wrath of those self proclaimed intellectuals who scoff at anyone who is ambitious enough to take charge of his life. Hypocrites. Kind of reminds me of the democrat party particularly that congresswoman who was making speeches against those who ride big cars, and yet was found being driven in Limo by her intern.
Whereas India has long foresaken such pseudo-liberal `Buddha` wannabes, Pakistan continues to be cursed with them. Get rid of the public schools they will shout.. get rid of aitchison, get rid of the educated elite... get rid of the bourgeoise... get rid of private schools... bring the madrassahs back.
We have tread a careful path as Pakistanis. Our enemies are all over the place. We have the Indians on the one side, fundoos at home, and Rehan Ansari types who have nothing constructive to offer except confused ramblings which in the long run amount to national surrender and primeval backwardness. Kind of reminds me of the Russian backed socialists in Kemalist Turkey who were jailed by the Kemalists for 20 years. The problem is that the ustad that Jinnah was, he was far too lenient with them in Pakistan... letting them go around free... instead check out Jinnah`s ustadi... he appointed one of these people as the first editor of Pakistan Times.. though undoubtedly the quality of Intellect of that man was much higher than the cheap copy we have masquerading in the form of Mr.Rehan Ansari.
For the first time, I have understood in full measure the loathing of Mr.Sigalph against the Left and the fashionable commis.

Mr Rehan Ansari.
I was advised to read your article by YLH though he knows that I always find something strangely missing form what you write. So this is what I find when I finally come to give my 2 cents,
“ylh gives thanks to a father figure for ``better or for worse``, when the worse is there for all to see but he will never acknowledge it, and so can never deal with it.”
“for better or worse” had a “regardless” connotation to it. i.e. Whatever challenges we are faced with today, the freedom of our way of life manifested through the creation of Pakistan is something we’ll always be grateful for. Pakistan was not made on the whim of Jinnah it was a mass movement. So I fail to understand what is problematic in being proud of one’s history. As far as Jinnah goes, his personal life, character and belief system is a national asset for us as well, so again, what’s the issue with that?
What would have been a problem is if YLH refused to face up to the social and political issues that a progressing nation such as Pakistan is facing. He acknowledges it and he deals with it. The only person in denial here is you. You refuse to understand what Ylh meant, said or says and believes. I have a feeling you’ve lost your youth and your wisdom.
If you implied that there are flaws in Jinnah we don’t see then bring them out and we’ll talk about it. Why would you rather show your disagreement instead of discussing it? Is it because you are sure what you hold against the anger doesn’t hold arguable weight? ... Just wondering.

Rehan,
No actually I was waiting for this statement by you... self hating defeatists are a dime a dozen. I know you and your type quite well.

Dear Harish . . . thank you for your comments . . . I didn`t know anybody remembered the Diary I did for The Asian Age, it must have been 5-6 years ago and was actually based on a very short brief from MJ based on prurience and porn . . . and when my article wasn`t good enough on these two counts, there were some very fine young ladies there who would jerk it up some more . . . on the Indo-Pak thing, well truly in the last 3-4 years we`ve seen the scenario move full pendulum from the stand-off to the bus diplomacy to Kargil to Agra to all-out war, in the course of which one has got a bit confused too . . .and I do wish I had the kind of skills as the writer of the Amoco piece at onion.com has . . . I met a very senior diplomat on a flight recently and the way he made it sound it was as though the whole Indo-Pak issue was a friendly boxing match between two houses in a colonial public school . . . so one takes refuge in humour sometimes.

Shankar, boom-aa-boom boomdee maarta hai, chal, phukat mein time barbad nayee karne kaa . . . patlee galee se sarak aur nahee to class legaa . . .
I grew up in and around Cal also . . . and what do I say?
On Karachi . . . I just want to know one thing:- do you have Udipi restaurants selling dosas?
(I was long ago once at Dubai Airport heading for Delhi, this was in BOAC days, and in the departure area there was this group of forlorn looking guys getting deported to Karachi and amidst them were two lungi clad Malloos . . . seems that two of the Pak deportees had managed to give the local escorts a slip so the Dubai cops in a blue funk just went out and grabbed the first two illegals they could find which happened to be a couple of malloos . . . so they were crying away and I remember advising them to go to Karachi and start a dosa joint . . .)

Subroto,
That is a very good one...the A to Zee of Dee aur lee...:)
Veeresh,
That was nice to know...no wonder you have graphic takes on several cities. I also like your robust outlook about cities and people. When you were writing The Diary of the Divorced Delhi Male...was the last time I seemed to have disliked some of your pieces. But, I vaguely suspect it was because of the slug itself...a little too much like ``Girls, Girls, Girls``...
But Veeresh, I lately seem to perceive that you`ve abandoned your project of getting more and more inner country stories about India and Pakistan. It is so ironic.
I remember reading that the Israeli guys were training the IPKF as well as the LTTE in Tel Aviv or wherever...and the best way they found to keep the secret from being discovered was to have a wall separating the two marching contigents being trained to fight the other. And...in a chilling parellel of the DDay Normandy landings novel...where soldiers dropped into hedges and marched across each other thinking of the other as the enemy in the darkness.
Dunno, why I thought of this...but Chowk should have more stories from Pakistan and india that are not comment pieces. Something like your ``our kebabs are better than your kebabs`` thing.
Rehan`s piece on Bombay/Karachi is one such. Maybe one should write more about people without the self consciousness of being Pakistani or Indian...unlike those diary items about children or adults going to the other side...and writing sentimental pieces about how they are Really like us.
Lets have more ``Inside Stories`` as it were.
Rehan,
Have you attempted longer pieces? I suspect your style is evolving and you might need to work on stretching it for longer forms. The burden of ambition on your form might be painful, and stretch marks will be inevitably available on the body copy, but it might help when as a writer you get more ambitious to write long pieces...like short stories...novellas...and perhaps the novel. Show me a South Asian with remote control of English NOT wanting to write a novel...:)
Zafar bhai,
I like your take on Shankar`s bombaiyya...but then again we are entering micro-bombaiyya where dialects clash...Shanakar`s is more Matunga-Wadala...yours is more...Bandra-Sandra-Makapau and wee bit touch of Bollywood...let`s hear some Mohammed Ali Road...``game bajayaa baap`` and then there is also the Maharastrian...Dadar-Parel Bombaiyya...as in Subroto`s list...heavily Dadar-Parel accent boss, maybe had to do with Puneri start...:)
And what about those exquisite phrases....
kaan ne niche nikaaloon kya (makapau...I suspect from remove...:))...becomes (Mohammed Ali-JJ-Paydhonie)kaan ke neeche bajaoon kya....(and finally Parel-Dadar...Kaanakaali Ganpati...:)
Farzana is a must here...I just loved her chutnification of the language that she used in a response to Trillion`s article...:)

hhhm interesting article. This article illustrates the fact that you can take karchi from Bombay, but not the bombay from karachi. To extend, and labour the point, you can take Pakistan from India, but not the india from pakistan (this in a civilisational sense andnot a political sense).
Ataboy, rehan, you have just shot the nations with TNT and TNT is in tatters!
The quote from your article
(
I am reading a writer who says the relationship between those who walk the streets of a city like Mumbai and those who built those streets is like the relationship between descendants and their ancestors. Of course, I am from Karachi, but the first time I came to Bombay, and roamed in the Fort and Colaba area, I felt I was walking in the city of my ancestor. I could feel it as I turned street corners, sat in Irani cafes or went into a cinema. A preposterous idea grew in me even as I was engaging in ordinary, even boring, activity, walking in the heat, failing in cooling myself off with a Fanta in a café, watching a bad film at The Regal. Karachi is to Bombay what a potted plant is to the nursery it came from.

Dear Harish . . . I kind of grew up in Bombay, in fits and starts and also saw it from the rear orifice as a shippie . . . I also kind of managed to more than once get off a ship which was in Karachi Port and go for a semi-guided tour of Karachi (this was in the early `80s and Indians were not allowed ashore but you know how it is, muslaa ek hai .. .. ..) . . . sure the similarity between Karachi and Bombay was amazing even then except for the fact that you see more women in Bombay.
As for the enervating humour . . . well I find release in lightness after days and often evenings spent in trying to be a businessman here in India!!
Busybee once told me: all you handsome Delhi wallah chokraas you come to Bombay and take the prettiest girls away. Very true very true . . . even now this tradition prevails. I wonder if Karachi suffers the same fate?

``## Alas....this is what happens when we Mumbaikars allow some Bong to hijack our language in a valiant attempt to impress some chowk-chick..... sacrilege.... kee Subroto-da, kee korcheesh....what have we done to deserve this?``
impress some chowk-chick???? Bas kya? Kai ko maap lete hai boss? Appan aap hi kay baju may rahila hai - tumchi Mumbai ani aamchi Pune. Of course in the 15 years since I left the language has changed (and yes it is called Bhindi by many - universally acceptable? It seems not).
But you are right Shana is oversmart and Chappan Tikli is someone having lots of pimples and scars on his/her face.
Kaka? I don`t know about that one, but while Pandu is used for a policewalla it not something you would say to his face (just like you`d never call a cop ``Thulla`` in Delhi) whereas Mama is used.
And I did miss out on the Dhakkan (stupid) e.g. ``Kis Dhakkan nay yeh post lika hai``.
