Dear Mian Usman,

Perhaps you should read Bernard Lewis the Princeton Professor of Middle-Eastern History who has numerous books and papers on this topic. Your thoughts improperly put the blame mainly on ``Western media`` for Islam`s image.

The western media does not label most countries with an muslim majority as ``Islamic`` because of their demographics but because of their constitutions. Most countries like Pakistan for example proclaim themselves as the ``Islamic`` Republic of Pakistan. Most (if not all) even have a proclaimed state religion. Why not should the Western media call them so? Any valid reason and lunch is on me.

As for the ``Islamic Bomb``, Nawaz Sharif (and Pervaiz Musharaff subsequently) have called it so to gain popular support and raise Pakistan`s prestige in the `Islamic`` lands.

If muslims feel it is important not to be known only for their religious inclinations but for their many other qualities they should stop acting like Islam is ``oxygen``. There is life and salvation outside the Koran like many christians and their secular societies openly profess about religion being a personal affair rather than a legislative manuscript.

The blame for Islam`s poor image is not western media but muslims and muslim societies themselves.

Huhn, that ``charge`` is being made, repeatedly, by Pakistan, even today! So what is new?! Besides, it seems to me that the powers that be in Pakistan--the military--absolutely believe that like its gospel truth.

Arafat has not been able to do a damn thing about Palestinian terrorism for 2 reasons:

1)There are plenty of factions among Palestinians who believe that any deal with the jews is a sell-out.

2) Mossad is fully convinced that Arafat says one thing in public, but secretly supports these factions he`s supposed to ``control``. Dont underestimate the efficiency of Mossad.

One thing is sure..even if he`s telling the truth..he cant control them. Thats why hardline Israelis feel that Arafat is a non entity.

When Arafat sided with Saddam during his occupation Of Kuwait..it pissed the Saudis & Kuwaitis. Numerically they maybe smaller than the rest of the Arabs. But they have petro-dollars..& that makes them very powerful. After the Gulf war, it became clear to these powerful Arabs that they should at least make some accomodation with Israel..cos it aint gonna go away.

Jews are one of the most upwardly mobile people in the world. They are hard working, industrious, emphasise education to their children & have an incredible business acumen. Anywhere in the world, if Jews are given half a chance, they reach the pinnacle in society. Their contributions to the arts & sciences have been legendary, & continue to be so. The world would be a much poorer place without Einstein, Menhuin..heck..even Seinfeld. Thats one of the main reasons they are hated...pure JEALOUSY.

Its no wonder Jews said we are no longer going to lie down & get screwed by the rest of the world. ``We will create Israel & fight to preserve it with the last drop of our blood``. In the process they have also become the most admired military in the world, as well.

There are only a few muslims on Chowk (sigalph & even ylh..) who have the courage to look inwards & call a spade a spade.

I have no sympathy for the Palestinians. They desecrated the Olympics, hijacked planes & have the blood of plenty of civilians on their hands. How many Palestinian mofos have shown solidarity with the Kashmiris & the Kurds? They are sooo absorbed in feeling sorry for themselves that they think they are the only frikking oppressed people in the world. They have bastardised their cause by terrorism. EU can give murmurs of sympathy to them....they are totally dependant on Arab oil. If push comes to shove..wanna bet who the EU will support..Arabs or the US-Israel alliance?!

The one thing Palestinans are good at...breeding like rabbits! An average Palestinian woman bears 4-6 children, at least. Despite all the oil money they have got, how many schools & universities have they put up? They are very good at producing more disaffected youth who are brainwashed into thinking strapping themselves with dynamite & blowing themselves is an ``Islamic`` crusade. They spit upon the face of your Prophet!.

The rest of the Arabs have very little to show for themselves too. The oil rich states could have used the money to make themselves the bastion of Islamic education & a create a renaissance in Islamic arts & sciences. Whats the point of boasting that muslims invented algebra?!

No; Saudis are squandering money in Cadillacs, horses, falcons, harems, trips to Switzerland & donating to madrassahs that produce a generation semi-literate fundos. Its pathetic to see these kids squatting on the floor, rocking back & forth like automatons, memorising the Quran, by rote, without even understanding the meaning. At best they grow up to be like that Naqsbandhi character who thinks Arabs hold some sort of exatled status in the Muslim world because the Prophet was Arab! Seems to me Pakistanis like these (& they are a dime a dozen) have noses that are 10 shades browner than their face--when they come into contact with Arabs.

Instead of creating a resurgence of the Golden era of Islam, their legacy is to hijack the Muslim world & regress it back to the 16th century way of living...totally anachronistic in today`s world.

--Arabs give them murmurs of sympathy about Kashmir..& behind their backs wink & nod to India!

--Pakistani workers are treated no differently than kafirs in the Gulf states. Nothing more than second class citizens!

--A small time Saudi prince flies into Pakistan..does some backdoor negotiating with Mushy & his chamchas..the next thing you know Al-Sharif & fly. are packed off to S.Arabia with their billions. What happens to ``due process`` of Pakistani law?! Yup, Jinnah would have been VERY VERY proud!

That is quite improbable. The PLO`s charter calls for the destruction of Israel. That portion is SUSPENDED but still not aborgated from the Palestinian National Covenant.

Syria, Libya, Iran, and Iraq (all Muslim countries last time I checked) have their official positions as the destruction of the `Zionist entity`.

Great post. By focusing on the wrongs committed by others we lose out ability to solve our own problems. Christians slaughtered and oppressed Jews for centuries. Muslims of all hues themselves accumulated quite a phenomenal record. We Hindus oppressed our own people, often driving them into the fold of other religions. The Japanese committed unspeakable horrors against many SE Asians. One could go on, for the list of human depravity is indeed long.
