Happy Birthday Chowk.
Thank you CHOWK STAFF for your dedication, hardwork, and committment. One day you will be considered the earliest pioneers of freedom of thought and expression in our part of world. Thank you for fighting the fight against ignorance. Thank you for being the beacon of light, which helps people find their own ways. Thank you. God bless you.

Happy Birthday to Chowk..
okay, so I`ll refrain from singing the HB song that my mother still sings to her four children at approximately the time they were born!!! (thankfully none of us were born in the wee hours of the morn)
Thank you for making this possible..and may we continue to live in interesting times, and have articles that make us swoon, cause us gloom, and make us boom!
Cheers to all the writers, contributors, the editors and the staff..now back to the champagne and Red Label!!!
a.
PS..agree with temporal (must disagree with him at some point!) about the link, and bringing back the current articles :)

A Very Happy Birthday indeed.
To all the invisible minds/hadns behind - an EXCELLENT JOB, WELLDONE, THANKYOU to all for adding a certain spice to existence. THe first time was - what a drrrry website. THe second - what gives?? why would anyone rate this the best website! They dont even have a movies section!! FInally my attention went to the little numbers next to each article title and there was no looking back after that. Better than early morning cuppachai - it has been a pleasure coming to this website ever since.

Happy Birthday, and congratulations on all the hard volunteer work, for a job well done. You deserve a lot of credit.
P.S. Don`t let the success go to your head. The subtlety of a shy smile is much more seductive than the excesses of lustful exposures....the simplicity of the barely noticeable yearly chowk@x, hidden within all the regular articles, was much more graceful than a front page full of articles of self-proclamation.....

Here are some things Chowk`s wonderful staff can think about for the next year:
1)Convert some of the 2000 lurkers into contributors and interactors.
2)Either update the replies section more frequently or get some volunteers to do it.
3)If financial considerations are causing problems for Chowk, try converting it to a subscription site for users outside the subcontinent.
4)Would it be too much to look for 12-head`s IP address(es) and have your cgi scripts automatically disallow it to create more nicks? This mere threat was enough to discourage mullah urstruly from doing the same......
later

P.S: Hopefully we`ll see Chowk around for a while.

Happy Anniversary Chowk and congratulations to staff, writers, interactors abd lurkers. It is better to be here than spending time somewhere else [although the best spending of time is to accumulate.........whatever...........for hereafter. hehehe]

Pick any number between 2 to 10
Multiply it with 9
Add the the both digits of double figure number
Subtract 5 for chowk`s fifth birthday
Assign letter to 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D and so on
Think of a country whose name starts with the letter for the remaining number
Think of an animal whose name starts with the second letter of that county
Think of the color of that animal

Some ancient Chinese sage must have--and if didn`t he should have--said that the one least visible is the one most noticeable. I`m glad to see that Chowk staff follows that saying so well.
Thank you guys for giving us Chowk, where our paths cross. You guys are just great, especially my dear friend with whom I had a great conversation at Kabul Restaurant. No, my friend, the food was very good, and my company even better. The English language has a word for situation like that: conviviality--good food, good wine, good company! Next time it`ll be my treat.
Running Chowk may be a tiring job, but in no way it`s thankless. We Chowkies love you for what you have given us. May the Heavens smile on you!

There is something great about Chowk. And that is why people tend to stick to it. if you see most of the other websites including sulekha, the rate at which people come and leave is pretty high. But on Chowk, most of the regular interactors have essentially remained same over the last two years and some new ones have joined the mainstream. This kind of loyalty is very rare in the cyberworld.
PS Happy b`day Chowk.

Kudos to Chowk staff on their dedication to having a community. It amazes me that when many dot coms have dropped out or have converted to subscription sites and then have dropped out, you still keep going. Must be that you really love sadhana, urstruly & ylh :)

Happy Birthday Chowk and Members of Chowk!!
I am very happy to be a member of this Pakistani group. There are some very good ideas that are discussed on this forum. The people on this forum range from the terrorists to peace loving. I am very impressed that this forum does not enforce/mandate censorship, and accepts all comers, regardless of their point of view. This is the nice thing about Chowk that we can be free to discuss our views. Also, there is no senior or junior member of chowk. All members are equal and are free to express their point of view. This is very nice and very Islamic. Eventhough many chowkies are unIslamic in their viewpoint and behavior. A vigourous debate is always a good thing and hopefully we can learn form each other and respect each other. I just hope the calm voices of the peace loving members will overcome the rantings and ravings of the terrorists.
On this happy occasion, I would like to say that I am sorry if I have offended some of you chowkies, but all what I have said is from my heart. I do not regret it and I hope you will come to appreciate my point of view in time.
Peace by brother in Pakistan, India and all over the world.
P.S.: To editors: In your statistics it would be nice to know the demographics of chowk. Who is from where and what is the age groups of the members.

August 14 & 15 Blues?
MOSQUE OR TEMPLE?
The Indus and the Ganges shed few tears of joy
Can one imagine the Taj Mahal without admirers?
While a Brahmin says that the age of great people is over
The multitudes wait for messiahs at
The Shalimar Gardens reserved for VIP’s
Bring your own mirrors to the Sheesh Mahal they say.
Old and new dynasties suffer blow after blow
Unfortunately this is not a kushti/wrestling show
While a warrior Shivaji watches Rustam do battle
Tired soldiers shoot at Midnight’s Children as
The battlefield has now reached the qalandar/minstrel
Who only wanted to recite Urdu poems.
History they say is pregnant once again
Multiple births, the wise old ladies predict
But they have been wrong before says the hakeem/doctor
Herbal medicine will control the birth rate and
The pulse of the mareez/patient has been felt
Indigestion from eating at Delhi’s Chandni Chowk.
Yet peace will make a comeback “as always” says the shaayir/poet
Such burning tragedy is embedded in our tandoori bread flour with
An explanation that has already been written in Sindhi
A translation is in the works at a London suburb but
All this hate is blind says a Sufi/Mystic
Mosque or Temple, please mix your spirits with great care.

Happy birthday chowk, and glad you plan to stick around for five more years (at least). And thanks for providing facilities to promote this wonderful new form of communication - the internet. As per the news item today, they have identified the ``speech gene``, which is unique to humans and which came into being about 200,000 years ago - about the same time that mankind in its present form came into being. This signifies, I think, the fundamental importance of communication to human progress. And the internet will no doubt ultimately have as big an impact on human society as development of speech - thus, to state the most obvious, it will be hard to demonize the ``enemy country`` if the populace can communicate with one another. So, chowk is part of a fundamental revolution in human affairs, I think.
And for that reason I wish you all success. I do think that for success chowk exercises a bit more of it`s role as moderator (i.e. by ensuring that posts stick to it`s stated guidelines), rather than the laissez-faire policy it currently seems to have. It would require more effort, but ultimately it would make chowk a more effective forum for thoughtful discussion. Otherwise, Gresham`s Law (bad currency drives out good currency) would ultimately apply I think.
The above are some thoughts on fine-tuning the management of chowk, and certainly I certainly hope that this is done while retaining the basic spirit of letting all viewpoints come through on chowk.

Hard to believe that 5 years have gone by. That was the time when chowk was rich, could afford to pay ``india today`` far a banner ad. Now it is hard for chowk to have timely updates.
Most of the bright and colourful have left, well only hamidm remains. Bhaijan, ganga din, tehsin.
There were great moments, kargill invasion, hijacking and of course, `` he had no choice`` by the little mushy. It must be a useful exercise to resurrect that article with all the posts to see who was most ``prophetic``. Most of the posters appear to be still around.

There is no place as wonderful in this whole wide cyber world. From unbelievable cat fights to downright piggish behaviour to abnormal feelings of wanting to reach out and hug interactors to meeting some special people in real and cyber life- Chowk is a miracle without which many of us would be different people. Thank you most emphatically.

12 head,
{{Since then i have been on & off but no body gacve me any notice or respect untill NOW}}
That ``respect`` you talk about was when tahmedji thought you were a genuine interactor. He himself admitted that you caught him when he was half asleep.
The ``notice`` interactors give you is otherwise known as ``negative attention``...the kind one gives to an annoying child who wants to be part of the conversation, when adults are talking.

Happy 5th Birthday Chowk !
Sometimes I wonder how Chowk has managed to survive amid the slowdown in internet advertising spending. I have noticed a decrease in the frequency of new articles being posted.
I would like to know what are Chowk`s plans for survival and if there is anything I/WE can do as readers of Chowk.
Stay Happy!
Aziz

Aw c`mooon stop being a lurker & join our party! Who cares if your english is bad? I speak bad english too. The good thing about Chowk is kuchbi english chalta hai our kuchbi spelling chalta hai. Just dont submit an article though, because then Mia Temporalji will start singing:)
Dont worry about rudeness & occ. gaalis either. Words can hurt children, but as mature adults, as long as we are secure about our self esteem, words should NOT hurt us! People give gaalis to GOD!...why should mere mortals like us be exempt?
Thats the good thing about cyberspace & anonymity. On Chowk you can reveal as much or as little about your personal self. Even if there is a khunnas-ka fight; nobody gets physically hurt. Thats what happens in the ``real`` world....then all the ``fun`` in the fight is gone:)!

Happy anniversary Chowk. Here`s wishing you another 5 more years. By that time I hope we will not need Chowk to air our peeves and kudos, :-)
I hope all 2K members (lurkers?) will post something on this anniversary of Chowk`s creation.
It is also fun to read the responses even if its a bit of a bundchungal for some people, :-)

Dear ChowkStaff:
I may occassionally play the ingrate and whine about how chowk`s seems to sacrificing quality at the altar of sensationalism and polemic, but I remain indebted to you guys for more than I could hope to express in this little box (including, regreattably, a temporary loss of a social life sometimes :) )
Thank You!

“O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.” Ayah 8, Surah Al-Maida.”

AnNy #36: [abnormal feelings of wanting to reach out and hug interactors to meeting some special people in real and cyber life]
It is normal feeling to wanting to reach out and hug kafir interactors; abnormal is for the rest....:))
Remember it is always, ``kis kafir pe pyar aaya`` and not ``kis momin pe pyar aaya``. Also it is always, ``dil-e-be-iman ke baataiN`` and not ``Imandar dil ke krishmey``.
Smoking Chowk blend has magic qualities of visualizing fourth dimention and beyond. I bet before the sixth birthday, YLH and Harimau will be Bhai-Bhai whereas Scout and Rsaxena Behen-Bhai.

Chowk staff needs to be credited for their patience and hard work.
It is remarkable as scout said to be addicted to this site. And as someone else pointed out, cutting the family ties.
As Iqbal said (Was it Iqbal?:
``Silah-e- Shaheed Kiya Hai
Tabo Taab-e Jawidana.
Although Chowk claims to be a forum for South Asians to come near each other.
But mostly it results in anger and frustration and letting each other down.
But that is how family, friends and neighbour behave in real life.
So what is the prize for Chowk staff, except making their own life miserable so that we can be happy?
Happy fifth birthday to Chowk and Chowk family.

Happy 5th birthday. You`re one year closer to your death!
All know that the drop merges into the ocean but few know the ocean merges into the drop.
Think about the above two statements.

``Are you surfing the web again?``
``Uh Uh``
``What are you upto? Oh great you are at that site again. Don`t you spend enough time there at work?``
``Just give me a minute``
``I don`t believe it, you come back from work after staring at the computer screen and promptly log on to the web again``
``Just checking my e-mail``
``Checking mail my paws and whats this screen you have open? Chowk-mail? Is this a porn-site or something?``
``Don`t be silly. Its a very good site for interacting with others from the sub-continent. I mean where would I get to exchanges views with someone from Karachi?``
``Oh yeah and who are all these `people` most of the don`t even have real names? I mean whoi in his his right mind mind would want to be called `DRUMZ```
``Well he is one of the more interesting ones..``
``And you call this a web site? Just look at it - such drab colours, no multimedia to be seen anywhere. That same cartoon on the front page for how many months now, the posts take days to get updated, ...um ah I mean thats what you tell me ...``
``Hang on just a minute, Nawab have you been accessing the net while I am at work?``
``Er .. that is to say.. yes. But you don`t know how boring it gets here at home. I mean how long can one watch those soaps on TV``
Great so while I am working my dog has been running up the internet bill. Which left me with another thought.
``Nawab, what ID have you been using on chowk?``
``Can we go for a walk now I really need to go``
Don`t worry folks I`ll wheedle that ID out of him does he really think us humans are so dumb.

Samina jaan...
no, my birthday was exactly six months prior to August 14th...in my wishing Zafar a happy b`day, I was joking about the fact that it was my half birthday. Half birthdays vaise are celebrated by some people, and then there are the unbirthdays in Alice in Wonderland...but let`s not go there!!!! :) P.S...thank you for the half-birthday wishes! :-)

Let`s see..what is happening here on Chowk@Five..Asma is resurrected...Quinton Zondervan???...Yasser writes but doesn`t write about the Arundhati Roy visit...Rehan is trashed, yet again...the drought in India is incredibly much more serious and deadly than the drought the article is experiencing in terms of responses...since nobody cares what went wrong with Devdas, or the article about it, a poster has decided to make it his pick-up joint, and we`ve used it to list a few of our favorite things...a story of deliverance becomes Good-riddance...and clever Yasser wishes us a Happy 56th in advance..the Blasphemy board still goes strong with its `blasphemers`;), and most other articles that move to the second and third pages remain dormant...why is that by the way?!?! It`s not as if they`re not relevant anymore (if they ever were).
aaj hi dekhiye issi site par Chowk@five: where anything goes, except for 12+head...can we modify the Henny Youngman `Take my wife please` to `Take hydra and farangi kush..please!`
Okay, now back to our regular programming...
P.S. Dear Chowk editors, I propose you take Yasser`s cue, and write Chowk@seven in 2003..and go with that link thing...theek hai? You won`t be jinxed..pukka!

UMAIR KHAN:
``Jarahat tohfaa, almaas armughaaN, daagh e jigar hadiyaa.
Mubarakbaad! `Umair` ghamkha`ar e jaan e khastaa tuun aayaa!``

There was a CHOWK known as chandni chowk. Ghalib has verse-painted the horrors of those times in such a way that no matter how much the Ba Ba Blacksheep hone their origamic skills, the paper on which those verses are inscribed, always shows the factual facet of the farangi.
Naqsh faryaadi hai kis kee shokhee e tehreer kaa?
Alhamdu-Lillah! We are no longer taken for granted. A lot more has yet to be done to increase the dosage of their barbiturates.
Chandni CHOWK---1857.
Baskeh Faal-i-Ma Yureed Hai Aaj
Har Soo`- Shor Ing-listaan Ka
Ghar Se Bazaar Mein Nikalte Hue
Zahra Hota Hai Aab Insaan Ka
Chowk Jis Ko Kahain Woh Maqtal Hai
Ghar Bana Hai Namoona Zindaan Kaa
GHALIB.
CHOWK---2002
Keyboards kee haqiquatain afsaana buun gaeeN,
MonitoroN pey aaeeN kyaa-- aaeena buun gaeeN!
Tumm ko Umair! saalgirah e CHOWK mubarak
Yeh paanch shummain, buzm ka paimaana buun gaeen,
HAMZAD AFAQUI.
