dost-mittar..
Is our similar taste in films really all that frightening???!!!! :)
I spent the day yesterday with some friends, just watching Hindi films and eating pao bhaji (among other foods) and we revisited this hilarious Hindi movie called `Chupke Chupke` and there was this one scene where Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore and David were talking, and I was reminded of the fact that all three of them were in `Anupama`. That is one of my favorite movies of Sharmila Tagore`s. And that sad haunting song by Hemant Kumar..`Ya dil ki suno duniyawalo/ ya mujh ko abhi chup rahne do/ mein gham ko khushi kaise keh doon/ jo kehte hain unko kehne do.
Your mention of omitting Sharmila Tagore and Jaya Bhaduri brought that to mind. :)

Madani sahab (Reply 18),
It would be helpful if you wrote short and meaningful replies. I lost my way halfway thru your gibberish. Which Irani are you talking about- Makhmalbaf?
Sometimes your whining is so funny that I wonder whether you are actually a Pakistani or a mischievous Indian posing as a pathetic Pakistani? Like:
``Also in interview he said he likes Mr.Ray hindu garbage digger and even hoped to work with indian `art` films but he never said any thing good (also not bad) about our Lollywood. ``
Is there anything to say about Lollywood?

This was fascinating. Can`t wait to see the film.
I am intrigued by the idea of visual/cinematic poetry because I have been fortunate enough to have seen cinematic poetry achieved once in a while. There have been scenes in Kurosawa`s movie (Dreams in the title), S. Ray`s and Zhang Yimou`s work, the Iranian film `Gabbeh`, the movie `Kandahar` among a few others, where the simple images and color were so powerful and shifting they suggested/implied/insinuated poetic perception in the viewer`s mind.
This kind of imagistic suggestion/metaphor/simile is similar to the works of Imagists such as William Carlos Williams. It is also the foundation of Chinese and Japanese poetry, which can be profoundly minimalist and exceedingly suggestive. So, I`m not sure if the aesthetic of the plain and relevant is not entirely a modern Western construct.

Reaction Response to #15.
I am not Mullah or any religious authority so do not address like that it is not appreciated.
Now about irani garbage.
This guy is antyi islamic and islamic republic frowns on him as his bad character wife. Both are involved in extramaritial affairs is well known in iranian circles. They make fun of islam and islamic traditions in general at are getting foreign money and press review from `forn`press. I have seen movies and only attention is given as them make mockery of Irans islamic revolutions showing subtly as something has changed but most has not changed. His topics are about sexuality . Like hidin g of little girl in dress of boy and both heterotic and homoerotic erousal feeling and they are both pleasuarble for sure but not according to islam are haram and punishable by death. Its soft ponography i must but , but must admit soft ponography is most pleasurable. Same can be attained by reading erotic novels by lady Chatterlies lover or fathers and lovers by Lorrence , or Lolita by Vladimir Nobakov. Questions are are they good to potray in movies. Its not good and degenerative. I admit we are sexual animal and sexuality is deeply rooted. I use to feel very bad when I was young and stupid and in karachi our school teachers were beautiful parsees and hindus and Ahmedis and with provocative low cut dresses. It use to to cause graet arousal and deprevation and frustration which was not good. It deprived sleep, sleepless night and loss of concentration in studies resulting in failure in final examinations very bad and me not completing school And even reciting koran verses, preachers sermons, even colds bath does not keep you down mentally. So my feeling is that do not add petrol to already combustible dangerous mixture. This Irani has produced very good sexual movies which are dangerous to young muslim man of Iran. This leads to early premature marriage by young muslim or at worst visiting professional women who are just to steal your fathers hard earned money. This young marriage as like me we are stupid young having real wrong romantic ideas and resulting in hate of both man and woman over long time and byproduct is unwanted litter of children. There is no real drama but slow let down. Why we should pay money to see misery of afghan rufugees. These new movies `new` movies are like failed producers to produce good commercial movie. Its like arts degree . ba usless. Well let me tell you I like indian movies not for content but for nice scenes and beautiful women and nice gestures men women make in moves. Like Mrs.Mdhuri or ms. rai are most beautiful women and the sexuality alluring is so good and poetic while that devdas must be kicked in ass. We have also good looking actresses like reema but one does not be beautiful but that femaleness is so pleasurable. I think women look beautiful. BB was so good looking at one time I still remember but time takes toll. It was not politics but but sexual freshness brought her to power after sexlessness of zia. Same problem uncle pervez is having , Ayub had no problem he was handsome. Its not color only ( though white color is better over coal dak) but the allure wwwhere madhuri exceeds. Also this irani gargage digger presents women who are not good looking flat chested that is not acceptable, why public should pay for that. Also in interview he said he likes Mr.Ray hindu garbage digger and even hoped to work with indian `art` films but he never said any thing good (also not bad) about our Lollywood. All art lfilms are garbage in all world. Film should have drama , beautiful face, fast start, songs etc. This irani garbage spreader lacks all this. He is poor and has no money and collects money to produce `art` movies. I do not want to get in more filth.

cpothik,
With all due respect ji, I have seen classic Indian movies. Perhaps you should ask the same question of the person whose statement I was referring to. :)
Judgment?! Since you have no clue as to what my experience is..I would kindly ask you not to pass judgment on what you supposedly think I`m passing judgment on. Thank you!

[Is it me, or are you terribly fruity ana?
Will you go out with me?]
Who are you..who who who who????
Vaise..I`ve made a pact, which includes the following:
1) Not going out with people who call themselves `pakis`..Paki is too much like Packy the elephant in one of the city zoos here, and while I know there are men who like to do it with sheep, haathi and saathi...nahin, nahin, nahin.
2) Not going out with hunks, especially dissimulating ones.
And if you still haven`t figured the answer out yet, it`s nahin, hargiz nahin, and kabhi nahin!
Now oy babu, leave us femmes alone, `cause all in all you`re just another brick in the wall. (can you name that tune in so many notes...)

Indian classical movies have a place of their own. Bhansali`s bright-lights version of Devdas is a pathetic attempt at showcasing an Indian classic for the WESTERN and Non-Resident audiences.
It is either Aish`s glamor, Shah Rukh`s glycerin tears or Madhuri`s sex appeal that is captured in every other shot. All I could see was gaudy chamkili embroidery and a bit too huge mahals everywhere. No emotions, no feelings and the facial expressions told me that the actors just so badly wanted to pack up and go home for the day. Each character might as well have been talking to themselves out loud.
How can anyone even MENTION Saigal`s Kabuliwala alongside this ridiculous parody of the original Devdas?

Devdas failed because people dont like pathetic masocists as heroes. Besides in this day and age of ecstacy, angel of death, and redmption (new drugs) an adult killing himself with booze looks like a kidergartner getting high on cough syrup or mom`s bathroom air-freshner. Now people like heroes who shoot up white powder up their nostrils and shoot indiscriminately in nursery schools or in case of Indian movies it is worst - people`s new hero is a yuppy who knows how to work with Windows 2000 and can send e-mails. He has to be filthy rich to pay ransom for his kidnapped mother in crore of rupees.....and kidnapers of this day and age wont ask nothing short of crore rupees in ransom-gone are the days when they would settle for saat laakh.

another take on devdas:
CINEMA
The unbearable opulence of Devdas
In our globalised times, the tragedy of Devdas has been turned into a garish and thoroughly hollow spectacle of pure consumption.
SUDHANVA DESHPANDE
Devdas is Saratchandra Chattopadhyay`s 1917 novel, written when the novelist was 17. The novel itself, though immensely popular, is mushy, sentimental, and wallows in self-pity for its hero. In 1935, P.C. Barua filmed it simultaneously in two languages, Bengali (wherein Barua himself played the hero) and Hindi (with the legendary K.L. Saigal in the lead). This writer has seen neither with any degree of closeness to feel confident enough to comment on them. Some points may nevertheless be made. Satyajit Ray had a low opinion of both Barua and the film. He thought Barua`s cinema was unrealistic and stylised. Ritwik Ghatak, on the other hand, with more respect for the popular, put Barua amongst the greatest Indian filmmakers. Whatever one`s opinion of the filmmaker and the film, it is clear that much of Barua`s passion for Devdas arose out of a strong autobiographical identification. Born in a princely family, Barua lost his wife and contracted tuberculosis in 1934. While making the film the following year, he fell in love with and married his leading lady Jamuna, who did not come from what was considered a `respectable` family background. Not only was Barua under great emotional strain when he made the film, it appears that for the Bengali public as well, the boundary between star and screen persona was blurred. The film, in both its versions, was a great hit.

Ana, (Reply 5)
``I would be hard pressed to compare an Indian classic with La Dolce Vita, or Satyricon, or La Belle et La Bete, or Cyrano de Bergerac, or The Hairdresser`s Husband as well...and I`m not even sure a comparison should be made :)``
Have you really seen any Indian classic? It seems you are limited only to a few Hindi or Urdu movies. Have you seen the works of Ray or Gopalakrishnan? Or even Benegal? How can you pass judgement based on such a limited experience?
