Naqshbandi

i am talking about the universally accepted--and scientifically proven now--prototype of beauty: symmetry, oval face, straight fine nose, high cheekbones, fair-ish skin, big eyes, flawless skin...)

Dude, there is no ``scientifically proven`` prototype of beuaty. It all depends on perception which in itself is influenced by culture. Compare Reuben`s painting with today`s Fashion Models

RSaxena:

.``..her job is not to look sexy...neither was janet reno`s...neither is condy rice`s...neither was madeleine albright`s...what`s your point?.... ``

Um, I think his point is that education and ``deportment`` have nothing to do with beauty. I am inclined to agree but not completely.

re: rsridhar

I have to disagree with you on the deportment bit...no amount of sophistication or education or carry can make a Nirupama Rao (she used to be Jaswant Singh`s Chamchi) look sexy...dude, I`ve lived in Bangalore and I`ve seen knockouts with no makeup whatsoever and I`ve seen wannabes with tons of goo on their faces. The most beautiful specimen of the female species I`ve seen to this day in my 21+ years of life was this woman outside Jauharabad in Pakistan. She had a pile of firewood on her head , she was wearing clothes that cannot be called clean by any stretch of the imagination and she wasnt wearing any shoes. But her face, I am just not able to forget it. She was gorgeeeeeeeeeous. I guess what I`m trying to say is beauty is beauty no matter the education or background. Pretention and an accent can only be charming for a while. No?

I agree with Naqshbandi...I would not fear meeting a Pakistani girl on a blind date...sadly I cannot say the same for Indian women

Oh and Anny, Lahori women are better looking any day than Karachi ones ;)

re:#9 by Naqshbandi
Here we go again.
My contact with Pakistanis is limited to the ones i saw during my residency days in New York. Most were Mohajirs and were no better looking than an average Bihari Indian (no offense to Biharis here). My best friend, who was a Pakistani, was not handsome by any stretch of imagination. He had his charms but those were not in the physical realms. Two women from Pakistan who were doing residencywere average. One was short, plump, the other was fair but cannot be called beautiful. Both were Punjabese. The only other Paksitani (from Agha Khan Medical college) i met during my fellowship days was clearly repulsive looking.
Indians came in all hue and color. Some were good and handsome, others not so good looking. One Bombay girl (a Gujarati) was a stunner (how i wished then she was not married!).
By your definition of beauty, even a village belle from Afghanistan (we had photos of some simple beauties beamed to us from that country during those fateful months following 9/11) would be beautiful but that is not how the beauty industry views its models. There is something called ``deportment`` ie how you carry yourself. In that department, most Pakistani women (who have not seen outside of Pak) will fail to impress. City bred women (from Bombay, Delhi or Bangalore) have seen a lot more of life and know how to dress better and carry themselves better. This is a personal observation. Your blank statement that Pakistanis are better looking falls in the same category as saying `` Pakistanis are better soldiers`` or ``Paksitanis are better athletes``. It has no basis in truth.
Besides, if you really want to prove, you must convince your govt to allow beauties from your country to take part in international beauty contests, where such things are decided by qualified judges (certainly more qualified than you and me!). Last i heard, one woman competing for a contest in Singapore (?) was not allowed to compete by your govt.

temporal i have no link for that interview -- but then again our designers keep saying that all the time -- perhaps with some justification -- but probably more if you criticize them -- and there are many reasons why thats the case -- tho i dont think chowk is the forum for that --

Well *most* of our fashion models tend to be better looking than their indian counterparts..this is true of the countries as a whole too (before anyone jumps on to the bandwagon of `it depends on how you define beauty` i am talking about the universally accepted--and scientifically proven now--prototype of beauty: symmetry, oval face, straight fine nose, high cheekbones, fair-ish skin, big eyes, flawless skin...)--if most indians are honest they will accept that generally pakistanis are better looking than indians--of course there are exceptions...

:-)

I think you are misinformed about the Indian Fashion scene. The India Fashion week was well organized, tastefully done and has generated a lot of business. The Models are professionals and the rich rewards have attracted some really good talent. Indian designers are now recognized in the fashion hubs of Europe. My family has been in the garment business for the last 70 years. We have never seen such explosive growth in Indian fashion.

Faruk

I``m telling you man, you are badly needed in the homeland. And now that NIFT has called for a ban on Sangh Parivar uniforms (chaddees repulsive etc.) I think you really have some scope for making an impact...

Omar Quraishi: Have you heard of a Pakistani fashion designer Shakil Hussain? He has been making splashes in the Pakistani fashion clothes market. I am sure he will show up at Lahore show. His shalwar-kammez-dupatta and lehngas are hot.

To a layman like me, Indian fashion shows just don`t make sense. Most of the clothes are heavy on embroidery and the colors and the cuts just don`t make a design stand out. Plus most of it is pretentious (a guy cuts off a jacket at odd angles and trots it out as a design; not very original).

Granted there`s a lot of crap in Western fashion but you can look at some of them and say ``Aha, there`s a nice design`` or ``That`s definitely different``. I`m yet to say that to something from an Indian designer. Maybe the industry has to mature more.

And what`s with those big butt models with bow legs anyway? I never could understand why Western shows use stick ladies but after I see the models on Indian shows, I do.

...stupid indian govt. still can`t get our electricity grid and telecom network to function reliably, but it is heartening to know that at least they`ve not screwed up the fashion industry :)....
