Dear Chowk Editors and Readers,

Please be aware that the text posted by the interactor ``Suraya`` appeared this morning on the Sawnet listserv. Sawnet has set up this listserv so that South Asian and non South Asian women can dialogue about various issues.

It is understood that all emails and posts sent to and incorporated in the Sawnet Listserv are meant to be for the participants of Sawnet only. Whomever posted this email has breached that policy of privacy. I believe that the writer of this post had not meant for her post to be read by Chowk readers.

It is imperative that the editors at Chowk find out who ``Suraya`` is and why she/he posted the Sawnet letter without the author`s permission, and fulfill whatever action is appropriate against ``Suraya``.

Be assured I will be contacting Sawnet about this matter.

Zafar, Hamidm,

Gots to say, I haven`t heard any such thing happening among my parent`s gen, nor mine...well wait-I`m wrong, 1 case, but it was a rumor....and yes, if I remember, some people talked...I`m going to be catty here- its seems that folk who have too much time on their hands find rumor mongering entertaining?....

On another topic, a lot of our fathers have passed away in the last 10 years, leaving our mothers to carry on. Almost every widow I know has refused to remarry. Any comment?

Zafar,

Ahh, you are harking back to Jimmy Carter Sahib and that famous interview...(which btw, I was too young to read at the time, but read about it later)....its always the good ones that get it metaphorically if not literally....

``Among my community I HAVE NOT HAD ONE CASE SIMILAR TO ANY OF BISMILLS OR OTHER PAKISTANIS FICTION WRITERS FICTION CLOSE TO REAL LIFE``

............ where do you live? .... in a monastary on some mountain in bhutan? ......... open your eyes, look around and you will see things that will amaze you .........our socities are just as sinful as the decadent west - the differnce is that we know how to keep secrets ............but once the tongues start wagging - ram, ram, mun na khulwaiye ..........you will be shocked to know that the chacha ji who you respect so much had a ``keep`` in bombay, and chachi ji was getting it on with the pathan driver niswar khan ..............

FRIENDS OF SOUTH ASIA
Presents
GARAM HAWA
One of the most poignant films ever to be made on the Partition
(in Hindi with English subtitles)

Starring: Balraj Sahni
Based on an unpublished story by Ismat Chugtai
Screenplay by: Shama Zaidi, Kaifi Azmi
Dialogies and Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi
Produced and Directed by: M.S. Sathyu
=====================================
. [Features] Balraj Sahni`s flawless performance as the patriarch of a
shoe-factory owning upscale Muslim Indian family forced to choose between
staying in India and relocating to Pakistan. The story relies on small,
subtle acts of oppression evidenced by economic hardships, social prejudices
and other daily demons suffered by one family. . . . Garam Hawa may be the
best film about an event whose infamous legacy haunts the subcontinent to
this day.
-Aniruddh Chawda, India Currents

The film remains one of the most sensitive and evocative studies, without
the slightest contrivance, of a minority group in India. . . . It is the
story simply of what the breaking up of a nation does; not only to human
relationships but to individuals themselves, ...
-Sunil Sethi, Junior Statesman

Sathyu`s film documents the personal trauma and the trauma of a nation
devastated by the division [of Partition].
-Manisha Vardhan, 3to6.com
=====================================
The screening is FREE and all are welcome to attend.
A small donation ($2 - $10) towards FOSA operating expenses is requested.

What is all this sex shex life, haiN? If she was lusting she had one in her head, and who are we to say that this doesn`t count?

(But for those who enjoy the literal minded approach Mrs R had children away at college, I therefore assume that unless they dropped from the sky/were found inside cabbages/arrived in parcel post she has, indeed, actually done it - ie had a...oh bah!)
