Science fiction stories that I read in 5th grade were more interesting then this. Idea presented is pretty generic.
I apologize for being so harsh. I just feel a bit cynical right now and just happened to read your short story.

I do not think the ideas presented in this short story are far fetched. Human (nerve) cell -to- machine interface are a reality albiet in infantile stage. And computers are already being used as ``external storage devices`` of data and also for processing information - if it is not an extension of human mind then what is. In near future when cell-machine interface will be mastered, initially, humans will wanna keep control over transfer and retrieval of data from these external storage and processing devices. I also foresee that the telephones as external devices will be eliminated and will be replaced by bio-microchip implants enabling us to communicate ``telepathically``. At this stage two scenarios may emerge:
1. A glitch or virus in the system may take the control from humans permanently
2. The man himself may give in to the craving and need for processing info faster for business and war purposes and hand over the control to ``external processing devices`` himself.
``Minority Report`` or ``Matrix`` are human destiny - eventually. Where is my tooth brush?

Chimps do not control humans. And most of us are just barely a notch smarter than a chimp (I`ll give Mr. Gates 2 notches :-). If you follow Moore`s law to its ultimate conclusion, we will be a nuisance at best to whatever comes after us. The best you can hope for is to produce brilliant works of art that will outlast you. Or to get off this planet and start another world somewhere else. I hear China is on the verge of peopled space flight! That is exciting! Another space race anyone? When are India and Pakistan joining the fray? Nothing like a little international competition to propel us to Mars :-)

How much will change, really? Proxy wars will be replaced by protocol wars. Oppression will be replaced by Denial of Service attacks. Hunger will be replaced by lack of electricity and UPS. Governments will be replaced by massively parallel operating systems. And, Bill Gates will still control the technology, hyper-advanced or not.
