[ Most of what I have learnt has been due to such institutions and instructors.]
Which is pretty pathetic, going by your frequent remblings on all subjects under the sky.FYI journalism is NOT literature.

TAhmed,
My condolences...
I also have to say that this piece of information that you gave, if i may quote it (and therefore read it somewhat out of context) in the obituary you wrote made me smile all day.
``a book on map reading that focusses on Pakistani terrain (e.g. the direction in which mosques and graves are pointed), and that has been the standard text in PMA ever since. ``

tahmad #75: Some of the best instructors, educationists, scientists, scholars etc. I have come across, been a student of etc., were in the military education corps, alongwith officers from other corps/branches etc. who were on assignments at the various military education centers. This is generally contrary to the opinion most educated Pakistanis have of military education - many of whom consider the terms military education and/or military intelligence to be oxymorons.
I had a professor (a Wg. Cdr.) who was considered such an authority on the Urdu language, that he was picked up by Oxford, immediately after retirement. A few others wrote some of the famous Urdu dictionaries/plays etc. in Pakistan. One of my favorite politicians and philanthripists, whom I always hoped would lead Pakistan someday, Omar Asghar Khan (marhoom), started his career in the Army Education Corps. The first person in my high school group to get an American Ph.D. is now a professor in one of the Army institutes. One of the most knowledgeable speakers I have ever heard was a civilian Bengali instructor (who apparently stayed behind after 71), who taught at the Quetta Staff College. The best Urdu poet amongst my age group, I have ever met, was a colleague in the PAF (he died in an air crash in his twenties).
Faiz Ahmad Faiz started his literary career in the Army. As did Ayaz Amir, Kamran Shafi, and quite a few other writers.
The one thing, to me, that has always stood out about the Pakistan military are its training institutions and the dedication of the instructors (literature, science, flying etc.) in those institutions. They are top notch - as good as any in Pakistan, and in some cases, as good as any in the world. Some of these individuals have dedicated their whole lives to the various military training institutions as teachers, and I have yet to come across any better instructors and scholars. My principal at one of the PAF colleges had taught everyone from the cadets to the COAS. Most of what I have learnt has been due to such institutions and instructors.
P.S. Hope I get to live to the age of 85.

TAhmed
I just read about the passing away of your father. Just going by my interaction with you, I am sure he was a fine human being. As Umer says, the good memories will endure, the sadness will be pass soon.
May his soul rest in peace.
Regards
Parag

Dear Mr Tahmed,
Inna-lilahe-wa-inna-alehi-raajiyoon. Dear Sir, welcome back to Chowk. I am sorry to hear of your temporary loss but I`m sure the sadness will dissipate (if it`s not happening already) and only good memories will remain. That can only be a good thing.
Best wishes,
Umer M.

My thanks to each of you dear chowk friends - Urstruly, Pankaj, sameerJB, Ansari, anNy, Saminasha, ajeet, temportal, scout, Banjaraa, Prem, Romair, nasah, ZafarA, Subroto, Kiran - for your kind thoughts regarding the death of my father.
In answer to your question, Romair, he was in the education corps, and ended his career as director of the education corps.
Although the funeral took place within a few (eight) hours of his death (per the wishes of my father, who asked me to write down the details of how he wanted his own funeral, as well as a few remaining family matters, a few days before he passed away), a large number of retired and serving officers from the education corps were informed through their telephone network and were able to attend. The education corps has always been like a family, with lifelong friendships formed that have carried over to the children in these army families even as they have spread out across the world.
You also asked about his views on the current government. He did serve as consultant (with regular working hours and an office in the ministry - at the age of 85!) to the government on reforming the syllabus of the madrassahs so they provide proper education and marketable skills alongwith the peaceful Quranic (as opposed to the mullah) version of Islam. He quietly resigned a few months ago since he felt that the government was not willing to follow up its words with actions in terms of reforming education in madrassahs - he told them when they were willing to act according to their words, he would again be available to provide assistance if asked.
I appreciate the chance to discuss my father`s death on this board, and will end further interaction on this topic in order to allow the original discussion on the article to proceed. My apologies to any chowk reader who did not appreciate this diversion from the main topic.

How about submitting your masterpieces to Toronto Arts Council. At least you can claim that your output/input ratio is highest, in the sense that you wrote such great pieces in a couple of minutes :-)
