Hmmmmm............beautfully written, nostalgia sometimes brings out the best in all of us. The depiction of the wedding day was fabulous and intricate. The drop scene was well woven, it sucks not be with the one you really desire to be with I guess that`s what six degrees of separation is all about.

aaria: Very well written story of sort of a middle or upper-middle class wedding mostly in desi traditions. I really enjoyed reading it. The last sentence really left me thinking about love.
[Placing it around his neck, he drove home in silence. ]
The sentence portrays a sadness that I feel is a sort of imperfection of true love. The feeling should have been mixed. The sadness of seeing beloved walking away with another person was expected for not making any effort to stay in touch for 8 long years but the joy of surprisingly finding out the steadfastness and being truly loved for all those years must have been rapturous. Love is not a business to feel let down for failing to make it to the end particularly when he lost track of that romance. I would have been thrilled with joy and solemnly swore to love her for rest of my life and wishing her all the best. No, I will not feel sad finding out that somebofy from my past has kept memories alive in some token form; my respect and adoration for her/ them will immediately multiply many fold.
He is one lucky dude to be loved so dearly and romantically for so long in absentia. I envy his good fortune. He should chanel this energy to some good causes in the sweet memory of being adored.

Sameer-

Those are wonderful words. I must say though I believe that there is always someone who comes into our lives that leaves a grand mark upon it forever. Perhaps not the person we are to be with but someone who could have been.

Thanks for your kind words guys.

Aaria,

Everyone here seems to have loved this story but I found it quite infantile. The descriptions were excellent but the over-romanticized notions of first love is hardly original. Everyone has their first love and everyone moves on and finds something better (usually)...the guy I fell in love with at 18 is soooo different from the guy I`m getting engaged to next week--5 years later. And thank god for that! I dunno...but the idea of this drama-laden, dripping with sadness on your wedding day plot just didn`t do it for me.

SaraJ,

Thanks for your insight. This story is only partially fictional, but sadly the plot is based on a true story.

You are correct most people move on and find something better, like Aisha did in this story. Moving on doesnt always constitute letting go.

Aaria - While it`s true that moving on doesn`t always constitute letting go, letting go is part of the process of rediscovering love, and if not love, atleast peace within one`s heart.

This story (I read it again, it was that lovely) reminds me of a PTV play - Rangish. The principal actress is in love with a college mate and has to get married to someone she doesn not love. By not letting go of her past, she ends up ruining quite a few lives - including her husband and children, and her own in the process by ending up divorced and in jail. And at the end of it all, her old lover rejects her and tells her that she should simply have gone on with her life had she only contemplated a bit and left the past where it was.

It is an extreme example, but nonetheless it does happen in real life.

It`s sad to hold on to dreams that will never materialize. And if you come to think of it, it`s sometimes better that some dreams never come true. :)

Aaria,

You know what? No one has ever taken criticism as graciously as you have. You are a true writer in the making. ;) Sorry if I was a little abrupt in my critique.
