[When are desis going to grow up and start making X-rated movies, since they are not making anything worthwhile anyway.]

Whoa, whoa, hold it right there!

Why do you think Sangilikkaruppan refuses to translate the film song I dare him to?

As is usually the case with teenage sex, sex is more talked about than actually done in Indian films.

IMO, one reason Hindi movies have been failing in recent times is because many are being made primarily with NRI audiences in mind. Indians in India can consume only so much of the multibillionaire-rich picture-perfect brocaded NRI type of romance-cum-music-video.

Hopefully these flops will lead to a bifurcation of the Hindi film industry, with one part of the industry making movies exclusively with tradition-and-brocade-starved-but-wish-to-be-current-with-Western-mores NRIs` dollars in mind, separate from the section of industry making movies with Indian Indian audiences and tastes in mind.

Thanks for this review I will definately look it up when it plays here.

There have been two Indian inspired movies released here recently, firstly Anita and Me which is based on Meera Syals novel about growing up in 1970`s England (mixed reviews) and a movie called ``The Guru`` which was a big hit (I didnt catch it)...it sounds fun, it is about an Indian guy from Delhi who goes to New York to become an actor and ends up as a new-age Deepak Chopra style tantric sex Guru to the Manhattan rich, abit satirical, keep an eye out for it my friend said it was quite good fun, but very broad in its humour.

Apparently she is! I was talking with Mogul Media the company that released the movie Bollywood Hollywood here and they told me plans were underway. I also spoke to Deepa, who also signalled the same thing. I loved Fire, Earth was good too, but Water sounds like it may top them both.

is deepa mehta really going to finish `Water`??? I know she was quite affected emotionally by all the nonsense that surrounded the making of it...and is she going to finish making it in India? I`ll be looking forward to that too, since I`ve seen Fire and Earth.

sHAH

I think the Malyalam version is not correct. It should be something like this:

Ungram Bangram Langram

Jangram langram tangram

Nangram bangram langram

langram langram bangram

Our local tamil news sound like this.

[When are desis going to grow up and start making X-rated movies, since they are not making anything worthwhile anyway. ]

since you`re all grown up, maybe you could make some X-rated movies...you know Mira Nair used a hand-held camera to film Monsoon Wedding...you could do that, but no...that might get in your way...chalo, that`s what assistant directors are for na?!? ;)

Dost Mittar:

``If there is any one city in the world that defines multiculturalism, it must be Toronto``

Very much true. I would not have agreed had I not visited Toronto myself. Great city.

Your review makes the movie sound nice. Look forward to seeing it.

I heard about this movie, deepa metha is surely a excellent writer, director, she prefer using the same actors in most of her movies. The place I study, which is lafeyette Indiana there isn`t any Desi theater, and there is a big community of desi students, so movies like these usually become the point of discussion among desi community.

Ppls here prefer watching these kinda movies, instead of typical indian movie, I heard about the other movie also, RAAT CHALI HAI JHOOM KAY, I hope I will get a chance to see that also

dost mitter,

I recommend you see ``Samsara`` filmed in Ladhak about the story of a budhist monk. The movie is original, it adds a new position to the kamasutra, it is in need of a revision.

Long ago there was a movie called Sadhna where the hero played by Sunil Dutt brings home a kotheywali played by Vyjayantimala to pose as his fiancee so that his sick mom who is stressed out about a bahu can die peacefully. But the film didnot seek to `mainstream` the kotha profession.

PS: Romair`s theory of Pakistani blood content in Indian actors/actresses also clarifies to me why I have been avoiding Hindi movies for quite some time. Thanks Romair.

the real surprise for the goddess who created Earth – u 2 Deepa Mehta ji? –

anyway will definitely watch it -- till then judgment in suspension -- ethnic films are the in things in comedies these days -- greek wedding is minting money -- may be Toranto will do the same –

Dost-Mitar Ji, don`t know if there was a hoo haa in Toronto. In Vancouver all hell broke loose before the movie had even released. I was quite heavily involved in the pre-release promotional showings, and the amount of negativity being thrown at anyone who was associated was simply unreal. Deepa`s movies unfortunately attract this kind of repsonse from the un-parr sheep that live our community, here and in India. Thankfully it all blew over once the movie released, and it became obvious that the negative hype was completely unfounded.

During the whole `fire`period there was a time when she was being flanked by 4 bodyguards. Ridiculous!.

Deepa has said recently that she will be finishing `Water`, next year. I can`t wait to see it, and I hope she ignores all her critics and just goes ahead and does her thing.

some traditions never die:

``The film opens with a dying Indo-Canadian father asking his son to uphold Indian traditions and values.``

can`t wait to watch this.

D-mittar Sahib, nice review.

This is a pretty good film. Not great. But an alright romatic comedy. Definitely, worth watching on video. But borderline for spending ten bucks at a theatre.

The best parts of the movie are the two leads. Rahul Khanna is much better than his brother and most other Bollywood actors. I don`t know why he isn`t big in Hindi movies. Maybe he is not interested.

Lisa Ray is definitely a looker. I am going to add her to my list, just slightly behind Ashwariya Rai. Very charming and extremely good looking (must have some Pakistani blood in her :-) ) Perhaps too gora-looking for the Hindi industry. She is a good actress though.

Best acting job was probably by Kulbhushan and Moshami Chaterjee. Its strange seeing the later in a mother`s role, after having grown up seeing her in female heroine roles.

``The real star of the film is Toronto. If there is any one city in the world that defines multiculturalism, it must be Toronto.``

This is definitely true. D-Mittar, do you live in Toronto? I am seriously thinking of moving there soon. Getting tired of the US war anthems.....

I like Mira Nair more than Deepa Mehta but what the heck it is just a movie. When are desis going to grow up and start making X-rated movies, since they are not making anything worthwhile anyway.

mittar ji...
ah, there you are! thanks for the review...Moushumi Chatterjee (used to call her Moushumi Chatterbox as kids) hasn`t always impressed me in Bollywood fillums at least, so I won`t be too disappointed. I did like her in a coupla Hindi fillums though, but it was soooo long ago.
I`ve been somewhat disappointed in Deepa Mehta`s `Earth`, `Fire` was good...hopefully this will come to a theater near me...will be on the lookout!
