That was almost a coyly satiric piece of crap. I say almost as I couldn`t read the whole thing.
#30 Posted by qusman1 on December 5, 2002 6:26:35 pm
Oh I miss so much the Friday Times column by Khar`s daughter. Hated it at first, but then got hooked to it during the long waits that my experiments required.

Yildrim:``narrator`s compulsion to describe, by brand, all the things she has, resonates all the way into her very personality, rendering her to be nothing more than a Thing herself.``
Thats well said but you must extend this description to the rest of us. Saw your profile which mentions ``Law Student``. Surely you are projecting an image by the use of an institution such as college or university.
Pretty young thing puts on designer clothes, men will flaunt education, less lucky man might join army and look powerful in uniform. What is the difference between Army uniform and a Gucci Sweater? Do they not serve our vanity, our need to project an image and identity? They also make the wearer more powerful. I for one am always impressed by a well dressed girl who is wearing designer clothes. I think automatically she is high mantainance & I will respect her for it.

[As the Aunties say, I might be able to tell you the good news soon!]
So it`s the Auntie Syndrome ! That looks like the compelling reason. However the intellect does shine through.
I hope Farid gets Bina Shah some more denting/painting equipment from Dubai.
Best of luck !

Tahmed Bhai,
I have no idea what the distinction would be, being completely banking illiterate! Esplain, Lucy, esplain!
Are you in touch with Hobbyty? If so, send him my regards.

Sac,
It turns us all into boring, dead, cow uddered, killjoys who stare walleyed at the yapping boys who nip at our heels...oh lord, in creating all the creatures on this green and fertile earth, how could thoust smite us with the humorless feminazi who just doesn`t know when to smile when she`s being told, or jump up and down enthusiastically when reading Camille Paglia`s latest sensationalist stroll down the unimaginative readers shirt buttons?

and Michael Jackson`s `PYT, pretty young thing` blares in the background...
spoofing the spoofs, if that makes any sense...to quote Miss Poo (another spoof) from KKKG, `Iiiiii like it!`
I`m staying tuned :-)

I think the use of ``thing`` in the title denotes allusions to the materialistic components of this evident satire. narrator`s compulsion to describe, by brand, all the things she has, resonates all the way into her very personality, rendering her to be nothing more than a Thing herself.

FJ #16 Oh no! One word from you, and I am demolished.
#19 Posted by tahmed32 on December 3, 2002 12:54:34 pm
saminashah #12 Good idea. :-) Are you suggesting that brother FJ would have interest in the concept of homosexual banking, or would it be an interest-free banking concept?
#18 Posted by FJ on December 3, 2002 11:22:31 am
tamed, it was an observation on your intellectual skills.
#17 Posted by Pankaj on December 3, 2002 11:22:31 am
C`mon guys, give Bina Shah a break. As the topic says, this is written for the ``pretty young things``. Read and enjoy it without trying to look for some obscure deep philosophical underpinning :-). People, dont take life too seriously :-)

:)
there are quite a few of these, materialistic designer name desi bimbos popping up in NY with a skinny cigarette tucked between their middle and index fingers and a small cell phone attached to their ear....speaking in an obnoxiously loud monotone about inconsequential bullshit to their gora boyfriends or equally obnoxious girlfriends.
might i add, they all have super straight hair and wear pointy witch boots.
how `real` is that.

The word incredulously should not have been used because I dont know what it means.
This is very good article and Dear Diary stuff never gets old. A lot of middle class folks who may have lived on the wrong side of the bridge might feel a little ignored by this article. I know I do. But thats why it works is funny & sounds real.
The pretty young thing does NOT accomodate readers who are not part of her reality. Geographically and culturaly she is ignorant & uninterested in everything beyond the Clifton Bridge. She must Ignore them poor bastards so a consistency is born between WHO she is and WHAT She writes. This was done successfuly here.
I dont see this as SATIRE. The writer can never get so close without relating. The writer did not pretend to be Pretty Young Thing when she wrote this. She simply found the pretty young thing inside of her and unleashed it... Writing is not acting. And this was writing.

I could not decipher it. Most of the people whose names are in bold letters are unfamiliar. Probably it is written for a certain croud.

Tahmed,
FJ is distinguishing himself as not only rubbish, but a special kind of rubbish....will someone post an article on Homosexual Banking to placate him?

``reminds me of TFT`s Amina Haq articles.``
I agree. but this is only satirical.
I miss amina haqq`s article. all that intelligence put to waste at writing stupid Girl Friday columns.

Seem to have read this before.
btw, to whoever writes it, I enjoy the Ittafaqnama in the Friday Times esp when your bhabhi smacks Nwaz with her purse.
Does Pakistan have a Jay Leno yet? India has once-a-week Shekhar Suman trying hard (I presume).

Just wanted to say ``don`t let the sourpuss comments get to you,`` because its good to see light humor. One gets tired of all the `academic` and political headache-inducing pieces that adorn these pages.

PS: Was wondering, though, where did the hives sneak in a food poisoning case? :)

FJ #3 You write ``Rubbish``. I assume you are introducing yourself, summarizing your personality in one word.

I think this is a pretty amusing article. I really enjoyed the part about Yale Law School (being not in yale law school myself but still quite understanding towards lawyer`s egos). Also enjoyable was the discussion about arundhati roy and the visas. lol. I`ll wait for more.
