If I cast my glance towards you, face to face and tete-a-tete
I expound thy grief, point-by-point, strand by strand

btw.. can you reproduce the farsi for the above poem. To me it is the most exceptional piece of poetry I`v ever read in any language...no doubt Iqbal regards Tahireh as one of the divine souls that he comes across during his cosmic journey in Javed Naama. If I remember correctly the poems goes like `darya ba darya yam ba yam chashma ba chashma joo ba joo`...and `lala ba lala gul ba gul ghuncha ba ghuncha boo ba boo!`.. and on and on..

Gill sahib,

Is Prem Nath=Prem Chand? I`ve never heard of Prem Nath..may be Nath was munshi jee`s middle name or something..

Mr. Bhitai:

Thank you for pointing out my mistake; Prem Nath should indeed read Prem Chand. The correction has now been made in the text.

I give two Farsi verses from Tahireh`s ghazal in the following. The whole ghazal is reproduced In Iqbal`s Javed Namah as you mentioned. If you indeed wanted the whole ghazal, I would try to scan it and put it on Chowk. Here are the two verses:

Gar beh tu uftadam nazar, chihrah beh chihrah, roo beh roo
Sharah dahem gham-e-tura, nuktah beh nuktah, moo beh moo

Mee rawad az faraq-e-tu, khoon-e-dil az dau deedah um
Dajlah beh Dajlah, yum beh yum, chashmah beh chashmah, joo beh joo

Tahireh was indeed a great poet and a greater human being than the poet that she was. She was a Babi, I believe you know it. To me, it`s (her religious orientation) irrelevant. Regards.

The greatest creation of human mind is the ``words``...... and its greatest undoing -- as well.

I like reading your articles. And I wait for them at Dawn. They tell me - and all students - that science cannot be treated as a holy cow. It will have to be dissected.

Unfortunately, in Pakistani schools/colleges/universities there is a problem that is perhaps rarely addressed. Most of the professors are not willing to imagine that scientific explanations can be wrong. They can`t imagine a Pakistani student saying something against a scientist.

We need to understand that science - and human civilization - can only proceed when we place arguments. They may be against any theory or `fact`.
