in my home we are told karbala was not about winning but about standing up for your beliefs even when u know for sure ure goin to get crushed..crushed tight and bloody... rona dhona aside, theres a great deal of inspiration to take from karbala in sitooations..tell me, do shias have a psychological problem naming their kids?

Saddam isn`t going to meet any `yazid`. It`s the Iraqi people who are going to suffer another act of yazidyat. And yes, those Iraqis who defied Saddam and will now defy the imperialists are Hussains in every respect!

The whole point of this poem in `dusty words we should, but learn not` is that the blood has NOT ceased to flow, it will flow again as a continuation. Of course you have your own interpretation of what this poem means or doesn`t, but I have it on good authority that the poet here is only too familiar with `history` and the bloodshed that has ensued up until 2003, and is likely to continue. Granted the image of Karbala is a very potent one, from which many interpretations arise...this poem is just one of them...at the risk of sounding repetitive...not an overlooking of what has happened in the past, but a reminder that blood will continue to flow, because we learn not from our past. ik naya karbala has been recreated time and time again. so please bhitai sahib...before you accuse the poet of not knowing history, read the poem again, with open eyes and open ears. if not, then the poet will not be offended in the least bit by your assertions.

what do you mean 2003? When did the blood cease to flow? It`s amazing how you quickly forgot the events of `91, when the `allied forces` permitted Saddam to quell the shiite uprising by flying gunships in the `no-fly zones`??

Our karbala has been going on for a long time now, ever since the takritis took over Baghdad (or the najdadis took over Riyadh, or Aurengzeb took over Dehli)- may be you didn`t care to read history..

If anything is going to change, it`s the addition of another oppressor in the equation. Before, Saddam used to kill alone, now `depleted uranium` is his unwitting accomplice..

As noted by Samina, the complaint to God/Fate, is done very smoothly. Liked the lines: ``This Hussain is no Hussain`. Yazid makes a very casual entrance. The word ``His`` before Yazid is well used and can mean fate, villain, misfortune...& I was left with Here We Go Againish feeling that the Poet is also feeling. And best of all easy to read.

This is great! When I got to the line, ``...unbothered, my god smiles...`` I knew I was in the presence of an authorial poet`s voice!
