Letter to Daily Times on 5/28/04:

Saving our minorities

Sir: This is with reference to your editorial, “Police and extremism” (Daily Times, May 27). The Samuel Masih case is the latest in a series of highly regrettable episodes that are tarnishing Pakistan’s image. Pakistan’s blasphemy laws have been misused since their inception; it is now time to do away with them. This would be a tangible step towards General Musharraf’s vision of ‘enlightened moderation’.

The people of Pakistan also need to show some compassion and fight the injustice that has, unfortunately, become the norm for those accused of “blasphemy”. The quest to revoke the blasphemy laws is about providing justice and security to Pakistan’s beleaguered minorities. All Pakistanis have to play role in doing this.

Nooralain-
You are so very right. After you said this, I thought about RATM(Rage against the machine), which used to be my favorite group at some point in time. In fact,I have iLogged a bit about them too.
There lyrics used to be totally socially aware, and there style was like rap meets hip-hop.They created a new sound altogether, which was called nu-metal in some quarters. Now the group has fizzled out because the guitarist left, but while it was alive, it kicked a$$.It opened at Billboard #1 and #2 for 2 of their albums, which is more commercial success than many groups which are better known outside US.
This poetry is totally like the one which Zach de la Rocha(vocalist of RATM) wrote.
Good work Ashwin.
Just pepper a few more ``brothers`` around and you have one hell of a rap song.
