Dear MirJee2003,
I would agree with you that the issue here is the Steel sector in Pakistan, without any obvious or implied bearing on the Indo-Pak relations. There is no mention of Jihadis anywhere, and it is surprising how often the topic comes up in the discussions, whereas the relevance is quite iffy.

Nice article, Pakistan does need to cash upon its own ores rather than importing the same.I wonder why the only steel mill was madein Karachi when the ore was there in Kalabagh and Nokundi. This means we are paying for the shipment of the mud/rubbish also from which a small fraction is iron. Too bad.

Can some one throw some light on the cost of a small steel mill for Kalabagh or some similar ore place in Pakistan? I wanted to compare it with the Karachi mill expansion cost of 1-2 Billion $.

I feel some visitors did not understand the topic and got involved in Indo-Pak debates.

the money used to invest in the iron and steel industry could be better invested in plastics, composites and electronic materials.

Azam,

Best way for pakistan to get scrap iron is by ship breaking. 20 years ago it was korea, then taiwan, then kerala, gujarat and noe it is orissa and bangladesh. After bangladesh, the poorest country it has to be the turn of pakistan. with the largely illiterate people, nothing can be better than this. A few cruise liners for break up, one can get a lot of fittings, glass, copper , pipes you name it . All that you need is hydrogen and oxygen can be produced with the excess electricity, better than selling it to the indians. With detailed sorting an dmeticulous disassembly, pakistanis can make a lot of money.

Here is a great idea to rope in the jihadists. Hamidm has told me that in the pak army, the straw man for byonet training is always in indian clothes, a sikh mostly, complete with turban. On the sides of the ship paint indians, draw a line through their necks, a kind of join the dots, make a flame cutter in the shape of a sward, give it to the jihadists. It would be sacrifice all year, un ending eid. May be a few can hoodwink al.. and go to heaven. all are benefitted.

If you are a steel man, float this idea to the jihadists and their sponsors.

Sikh girl abducted, converted to Islam
YUDHVIR RANA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2003 01:10:32 AM ]

AMRITSAR: A six-year-old Sikh girl in Pakistan has reportedly been converted to Islam by a tribesman who abducted and held her for more than a month after her parents refused to ransom her. This was revealed by intelligence sources here on Sunday.

This is reportedly the most sensitive incident of conversion in the recent past. Earlier, reports of mass conversion of Hindus in Pakistan under threat had been pouring in.

According to sources, Harvinder Kaur had been kept in Tirah valley of Khyber but no one helped the poor parents who had been running from pillar to post for recovery of the child. Reports received by intelligence agencies here state Harvinder has been given a new name, Amina, by a powerful tribesman Malikdin Khel.

It is learnt that, after the news spread and Sikh bodies in Pakistan took up the issue, human rights organisations in the country had constituted a committee to probe the incident.

Sources said the girl`s family is being pressurised to not publicise the issue and has reportedly been threatened of dire consequences.

Ref#10 Mr. Qusman... thanks for your comment.
Yeah, mo` bigger than yo mama!
What is this statemant? Has it any meaning. You may not like my comment but you need explanation for making in considerate, infantile dis order comment. Assuming you are expak you need to explain w2hat you write.
We have problem of Invester type people. What we need enterpriseing type not MBAs and PhDs. Most MBAs are fools and PhD are snobs feel they have done great. I am in business ok I sell part tyme medicines and we are short of that medicine makers. Lots of indian stuff is put pk made packet and make profit. Steel is required for defence and nation building, It is needed for big bridges, damas , roads( many do not know when you put steel in asphalt and concrete road is as strong as stone nearly permanant. Tanks, gunns, refrigarators, building etc and machimes to make sugar and cotton gin, so many. The tank capacity is measured by how much amount of steel (bullets) it can throw per minute. A big war making ship strength depends on how much steel its guns can throw per minutes. Our Pk Made tank can almost make curtain of bullets to kill enemy tanks. Our tanks have 2.5 inch thick steel plate cover, Without that thick steel plate its like coffee cake . War making ships take 1/2 Million ton steel to make 1000 war making ship. Submarine need that steel tube hold big flying bombs and computers.
Now no body wants to put money in steel making. We need to buy all scrap ships 3000 ships pwr year. I went to see ship wrecking with my wife she was impressed , also me. Big ship reduced to little pieces by so many people by shear human power. and with little STEEL TOOLS. again steel. All weapons are made up of steel, big guns and small guns, rpg to big rockts all that stuff and all pieces in bombs flying like death. Hindus are not making steel for amusemant or for fun its for war I talked about earlier. Yes we need chips of computers for war industry. All Muslim states spent 62 billion dollars, all steel. If we get only 15% then we do not have to export and stop wasting water and producing sugar no body wants to buy ok.
I really try hard to be quite with expaks but this idea of foren supremacy is hurting. As I am not expak i am rediculed. Let me tell you I am serving real white foreigners and they never comments like that as they are real high class born people and understand. They respect every body They ask my opinion and say Mr. Madani what you feel about this. And always thanks me saying `` mr. Madani you are very kind to your opinion and you are welcome ok. I am talking about not phony foren person but real blond white pretty people like americans, english not low level caste whites like china chhap central asians,Russians or polish or Turks type , they are thives they strip all their room before leave( Take away all knapkins, soaps, tooth cleaning sticks- tooth picks, all coffee packet, sugar packets, always gorge on complimentary breakfasts , some times even take bath towels and toilet papers and drink all free coffee as if he is dieing tomorrow) they have just white skin no brains and manners

Sir you need to what is this Lafangebazi and nonsense of``Yeah, mo` bigger than yo mama! ``. god by every body and good luck of coming war of india pakistan.

Even if its costly we need to produce steel. Without steel our arm industry will suffer. There will be final war for kashmir in subcontinent its just when it will start big way.. This has not started yesterday but at 1947 August it started and still going on. It is great struggle for capturing mind of billion people. Its war going between hindus and Muslims of India and Muslims of Central asia , iran,Arabia with strike of Mo Bin Kassim in Sindh Muslim dagger is inching towards heart of India. Its epic struggle and hindus are struggling back. The equilibrium was brought by British Raj but with 1857 the equilibrium is lost. Hindus and Muslim lost 1857 but won greater war. Hindus realiased their strength for them now it was just waiting game game of patience. While muslim insecurity inreased resulting in formation of Muslim state. This is going to be greatest war of civilization. A war between monist muslims against polygod Hindus. For first time hindus has reasserted and that is they took over Muslims states of Kashmir,Junagarh, Nizam state Culminating in slaughter of Muslim state of pakistan in formation of bangla desh. Let us be honest peace is not possible. But Gujrat is also a struggle of supremacy and will continue. It is sad our leadership is impotent at crucial time in battle. In 1965 if Yahyya had not been appointed our armour was cutting indian army our forces at Akhunar were ready to seal the future of indian army and cut their army in ladakh but they rested for 24 hours and our enemy got respite and brought reinforcement and sealed the final outcome. Same way our commander has planned nice campaign in desert south to protect soft underside of Sindh by capturing Jaisalmar. It was brilliant planning even indians admit just like rommel. Please read Z A Khan in defence journal. Again loss of nerve at crucial stage and not startig operation on time and preceeding with and teaching lessons. Desert Campaign was brilliantly planned but its carry out was not done at great loss to us. Again steel is required in mind. Also we had better amrericn planes but our tanks were left in open desert to be picked up by technical junk British hunter plane by hindu brahman baniya airforce.
In 1971 the attack carried out by airforce was not proper, they should have copied israli lessons either attack with full strength or just do not give reason to India to attack us. It would have taken 5 years to defeat us by gorrila type attacks. Also the attacks in west were not propely laid and no advantage was obtained. If we had attacked in full strength and captured Amritsar, chandigarh and chunk od eastern Punjab we could have bargained to return East pakistan or we Pakistanize east Punjab. Its loss of nerve at crucial stage. Even chinese army people were given full briefing of things going in e.Pakistan and they adviced to go for ultimate plan of Invadinding E.Punjab was neglected. All spread up army units no frontal attack. If we had east punjab we could have E Pakistan now. Now some say we are better without ungrateful bengalis is lieing. All ZAB`s Hindu mama should have whipped him for being misguiding army. Army should have tranferred top army units to east bengal. The trouble had started from 1971 March. WE should have faught like Russians at stalingrad as ZAB siad but again nerve loss.
Kargil was best plan and we were about cut indian army ans starve indians in ladakh. with victory at had and get kashmir but nerve of ur presidet NS lost and ran to USA. I would have suppoted GEneral Sahib if he would have ousted NS at that time and taken over then and pressed advantage and introduced foemal army in liberation of Kashmir. Unfortunately stupid civil rules were oneyed. It would have been great advantage if we had given freedom to our pilots to aid freedom fighter and protected against by indian air machines killing Northerrn Light In.fantry.

Point is you can think of surviving in war situation with out steel. What we should concentrate on Arm technogoly rather than subsidise Sugar factories and richsugar cane barrons subsidise steel production as its most stuff required for nation building and war. It is sad everybody has neglected steel industry and we have invited McDonalds who produce lots of garbage pollution.
I support writerfor steel production from Kalabaugh ore. I have heard Balo. stan is full of many metals like copper, silver and gold. But no body wants to put start money. Our business will like to put money in Mcdonalds.
Steel industry plants should be managed by Fauji Foundation type army organization to put vigor and developing new steel palts.

I am grateful to all who responded to the atricle. As for the Scrap steel idea, I feel in Pakistan we do not have enough local scrap so import will again be the only option. The commercial steel mills owned by private companies have a different angle to view a project , they want to minimize on labour while the governments have to maximise it.With LOCAL ore based still production we will gain on almost fronts. The local ore mining will create thousands of jobs and the steel making will create thousands more.I have not talked about the allied industry and the jobs it will be creating as it develops alongside the project.

It is unfortunate but economics dictates the world of business.

What is the cost of Pakistan Steel per ton as compared to Brazil?

And is forign dependence really the way to go?

Azam,

Like every thing in pakistan, you are out of step with the times. Ore based iron extraction is well and truly over. For a country like pakistan, it has to be scrap based steel making, whic can be small scale, can produce high quality speciality steel to meet the local needs. World fourt largest steel producer, ISPAT owned by the indian-british Mittal relies largely on scrap based steel making.

Pakistan having created Taliban which supported al quida and led to the attack on 9/11 should have benefitted by importing the twin tower steel, but india did it at throw away price. See pakistan got the blame, india benefitted from 9/11.

This should make my friend paagal insaan happy.

harimau 3,

Go a little easy on kudremukh. It was funded by iran in shas time, involved low grade iron to be made to pellets for direct reduction using gas in Iran. When the sha regime collapsed, there was no way for india to use it, and finally with the availability of gas it will be used in the mangalore steel project. Well, 30 years is pretty short in the hindu yuga time scale. The fact is iranians paid for it.

Salem is a speciality steel plant, no blast furnaces. The price of stainless steel utensils have dropped dramatically after that, at one time most steel utensils in south india had the marking, salem steel.

In terms of narrow economic efficiency all of the public sectors are a disaster, but their contribution in forging the foundations of indian technical infrastructure cannot be underestimated. Todays technology leadership of BHEL, ISRO etc are achored on the so called 30 years of inefficiency of the indian public sectors. In technology there is no easy way, it has to come out failures and sustained efforts. One has to than k nehru a lot for it.

Ref PaagalInsaan #1

As I was reading the article, I thought that with a few changes to names of locales, this could be the story of steel in India.

But I must attempt to satisfy your request that this be made into an Indo-Pakistan debate. So, here it is: India has lost more money than Pakistan trying to make steel.

Eg. Kudremukh Iron Ore Project, Salem Steel Plant, etc., etc., etc.

Now try topping that!

There havent been any replies yet. I`m SO anxiously waiting to see how an India-vs-Pakistan debate will be pulled out from THIS topic :)

Somebody`s probably gonna trace the root of the problem to be the Islamization and Jihadization of Pakistan.... and that will offend somebody else who`d write an equally offended and offending reply :)

GO ON! I`m waitinggggggggggg
