But when a team bowls first, there are no runs to defend, right? So the correct thing to do will be to attack as much as possible and take wickets and keep the target small, right? I still don`t get how you can call bowling as defense. May be we are just stuck with symantics, but I think bowling is as much an attacking wepon as batting.

Not defensive bowling...defense. You defend runs in cricket. You defend them by bowling and fielding. A good bowling side gets the better of a good batting side is my contention. So if a team has great batting and the opposition has great bowling, I contend that great bowling will win out. The great Windies team of the 70s/80s had great defense. They had the best bowling side in the world & best fielding side in the world. So they would have won even if their batting was not that great. They had great batsmen too but they had the mentality that they could DEFEND any total. GET IT??!!

In cricket jargon defensive bowling would be when likes of akram r bowling and a retarded captain like waqar has most of his fielding on the boundries.
So ur analogy of football does`nt apply in this cae where defense parcticaly can force interceptions to win the games (like bucs defeated raiders this yr in in th vaunted super bowl).
I can not imagine what the hell you mean by defense in Cricket. In batting defensive batting would be:
Scoring 35 runs in 15 overs when there are fielding restrictions in such cases there arent very many games that teams won.

I stand by my statement. India is playing excellent cricket. They have been a very cohesive unit. I still feel that if you look at past two years worth of one-day cricket, only NZ has given Aus a real test. I am talking about one-day cricket only. If India beat NZ, then I would say that India will give Aus a real run for their money. India has the best batting in the world. Their bowling is very efficient without being spectacular. I think they should play two spinners. I have always believed defense wins championships and defense in cricket is bowling & fielding.

So lemme put my thoughts through, the only team that look like beating australia is INDIA, u never mentioned india even though they r playing top class cricket. I think ur still recovering from pakistan humilation from india`s hand.

I think unlike what people think India has a very good chance of beating Aussies in thefinal here is why:

India is playing their best cricjet,

Indian bowling is much improved,

Aussies have been shown to be brittle if some one bowls sensibly,

Indian batting is very strong.

I think the only team in the world now that can beat Aussies is India because of their confidence in themselves and their team cohesiveness they have become a world class worthy of bringing the cup where it belongs, i.e sub-continent.

Rozaiba, Imran was telling the difference between an all rounder and an Afridi. An all rounder excells at either batting or bowling, and is then good at the other field as a bonus. Shahid Afridi excells at niether of the two, hence Railoo Kataa :) When he doesnt bat, we play him as a spinner, then we realize he isn`t a good bowler, then we try him as a batsman again!
I personally think they put him in the team for two reasons:

2- glamour

first of all when pakistan came back from south africa losing both the test matches and one day series by 4-1 there were rumours that there are huge differences b/w captain and senior players and senior players were havin objection that captain aint fair in selecting team so it was decided that in world cup manager wud b responsible along with captain,coach,vice captain so throughout the worldcup team selection was a question mark as team was never been balanced coz sometimes we were playin with 5 bowlers n razzaq as a 5th bowler was not performin as for not playin saleem elahi is that he opened against namibia and he made 63 runs good but due to his poor performance of scorin thez runs in 100 balls we were not able to make 30 n our run rate was not good now playin shahid afridi was a risk but he bowled very well in the tournament n if ha had chances against the minnows then u might had seen somethin awesome as he scored 50 in 18 balls against the dutch side last time we played em in icc knock out tournament.then for the bowlin well nobody bowled good in the whole tournament and if waseem took 12 wickets then 8 of em were agaisnt the minnows n other 4 were not of his class if we assume wasim to get wickets on inside edges to b good bowling waqar got 7 wcikets he bowled quite good but again gav away too many runs shoaib b saqlain were not good too btu again if they hav stopped england to 25 y cudnt our batsmen chased that target all the teams hav played outta their skins and kickin out waqar is not a good idea for me coz before the last 6 months we had a winning percentage of 75% under his captaincy n it was the time we had record of 3-3 Against aussies,3-0 against eng,10-2 against sri lanka,3-1 against w indies,and many more good records n apart from SA n india we had played against all of the countries so wat was the reason behind we losin rapidly before the cup?????

I would still bet on you guys to come right out of this phase. After all, yours has been one of the few countries that has consistently produced exceptionally talented batsmen and bowlers right from the time you started playing Cricket. You have a superb young crop of fast bowlers Shoaib (who can mature into a fine cricketer if he somehow learns to control his overconfidence and arrogance) and Sami (he`s real quick man), talented batsmen like Youhana and Taufeeq Umar (a rude guy if there ever was one...must learn to respect the masters), all rounders like Abdul Razzaq (agreed he`s had a bad World Cup, but he`s good), and Azhar Mahmood, and top spinners like Saqlain, Shoaib Malik, and Danish Kaneria. With these guys as the nucleus, Pakistan could build the team of the future.

Of course, if the Generals don`t spoil the broth.

Whatever everyone says about Mr. Afridi, he gets the whole nation`s pulses racing every time he comes out to bat; also, in the field, he provides Pakistan an edge. What he needed was proper grooming. Like Imran Nazir, another precious talent down the drain.
