ON SYEDS
During his life-time the Holy Prophet (pbuh) ended any special status for his family (and extended family) by explicitly forbidding his family to receive Zakat (mandatory alms) and Sadqah (charity and gift). Therefore, any Syed from his time on cannot benefit financially from other Muslims in the name of being a Syed. Thus Holy Prophet culminated any chance of creating any hierarchy among the Muslims on the basis of one`s origin or family - and he started it from his family first. But he did ask Muslims to help and take care of his family. So if a Muslim wants to help a poor Syed finacially he may do so but cannot do so thru zakat and sadaqah. God, in his ultimate benevolence, may consider it an act of kindness to ones fellow human being but helping a Syed financially does not releive one from his financial obligations towards soceity.
The Qura`n and Holy Prophet are very specific about the nature of relationship among the human beings. The Holy Prophet paraphrased several verses in Qura`n in his last sermon to describe this relationship in his last sermon, which is considered the first ever charter of human rights in the history of mankind.
Here is how he proclaimed the emancipation of human beings:
Equality of Human Beings
O’ Ye people! Allah says, O’ people We created you from one male and one female and made you into tribes and nations, so as to be known to one another. Verily in the sight
of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most God-fearing. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor for the black over the white except in God-conciousness.
Further he proclaimed that his family will have only two previliges
All mankind is the progeny of Adam and Adam was fashioned out of clay.
Behold; every claim of privilage whether that of blood or property, is
under my heels except that of the custody of the Ka’bah and supplying of
water to the pilgrims, O’ people of Quraish, don’t appear (on the Day of
Judgement) with the burden of this world around your necks, whereas other
people may appear (before the Lord) with the rewards of the hereafter. In
that case I shall avail you naught against Allah.
Sanctity of Human Life
Behold! All practice of the days of ignorance are now under my feet. The
blood revenges of the days of ignorance are remitted. The first claim on
blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabiah bin Harith who was nursed in the
tribe of Sa’ad and whom the Hudhayls killed. All interest and usurious
dues accruing from the times of ignorance stand wiped out. And the first
amount of interest that I remit is that which Abbas ibn Abd-al Muttalib
had to receive. Verily it is remitted entirely.
Respect for others Property & Honor
O’ people! Verily your blood, your property and your honour are sacred and
inviolable until you appear before your Lord, as the sacred inviolability
of this day of yours, this month of yours and this very town (of yours).
Verily you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for
your actions.
Rights of Women
O’ people! Verily you have got certain rights over your women and your
women have certain rights over you. It is your right upon them to honour
their conjugal rights, and not to commit acts of impropriety, which if
they do, you are authorised by Allah to separate them from your beds amd
chastise them, but not severely, and if they refrain, then clothe and feed
them properly.
Behold! It is not permissible for a woman to give anything from the wealth
of her husband to anyone but with his consent.
Treat the women kindly, since they are your helpers and not in a position
to manage their affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for
verily you have taken them on the security of Allah and have made their
persons lawful unto you by words of Allah.
Rights of Inheritence
O’ people! Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, has ordained to every one his
due share (of inheritance). Hence there is no need (of special) testament
for an heir (departing from the rules laid down by the Shari’ah).
Preservation & Sacredness of Institution of Marriage
The child belongs to the marriage-bed and the violator of wedlock shall be
stoned. And Reckoning of their (deeds) rests with Allah.
He who attributes his ancestry to other than his father or claims his
clientship to other than his master, the curse of Allah is upon him.
Financial Obligations & Responsibility
All debts must be repaid, all borrowed property must be returned, gifts
should be reciprocated and a surety must make good the loss to the assured.
Law & Justice
Beware! No one committing a crime is responsible for it but himself.
Neither the child is responsible for the crime of his father, nor the
father is responsible for the crime of his child.
Ownership
Nothing of his brother is lawful for a Muslim except what he himself gives
willingly. So do not wrong yourselves.
Brotherhood & Kindness
O’ People! Every Muslim is the brother of every other Muslim, and all the
Muslims form one brotherhood. And your slaves; see that you feed them with
such food as you eat yourselves, and clothe them with the clothes that you
yourselves wear.
Abolition of Racial Superiority
Take heed not to go astray after me and strike one another’s necks. He who
(amongst you) has any trust with him, he must return it to its owner.
O’ people! Listen and obey, though a mangled Abyssinian slave is appointed
your Amir , provided he executes (the Ordinance of) the Book of Allah among
you.
Finality of the Message & Prophethood
O’ people! No Prophet would be raised after me and no new Ummah (would be
formed) after you.
Verily I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray, the
Book of Allah, which if you hold fast you shall never go astray.
And beware of transgressing the limits set in the matters of religion, for
it is transgression of (the proper bounds of) religion that brought
destruction to many people before you.

Honest Opinion:
It is pretty apparent to me that the hindus get genuinely pissed when the Muslims are more willing to bond with their Muslim brethren, regardless of their ethnicity, then bonding with the hindus. Just look at the various posts on chowk, they are such wannabes, and keep on promoting how `` we share the same culture, we were all hindus in the past, etc...``
As to the claim of most syeds dying at karbala, my advice to those claimants, don`t say this in public, as people will laugh at you.

sorry it is ``Naqib al Ashraaf`` [not Najib al Tarafayn] --the most honoured of all the sayyids in the world because they are the direct descendents of Sayyid Abd al Qadir Jilani Ghawth al Azam who have stayed in Baghdad sharif and are both maternal & paternal sayyids.

pakfin #74 ``So for those of you who think they are superior to the rest by adding on the title of Syed to their names, live on and be happy with the title while the rest of the world gains knowledge and moves on. ``
Well said.

What I can see from a lot of postings is that the caste system is not limited to Hinduism but has infested Muslims as well.
First of all Islam never preached of a caste system or a monarchy. In fact as per certain schools of thought pictures of living beings are also not permitted, because this may lead to worshipping of the likeness of personalities.
Secondly the Prophet Mohammad`s sons died at a young age, therefore he did not have any direct descendants.
Thirdly if we link the title of Syed to descendants of Hazrat Ali, then it is strange to find so many of them around the world after the event at Karbala.
So for those of you who think they are superior to the rest by adding on the title of Syed to their names, live on and be happy with the title while the rest of the world gains knowledge and moves on.

12 head,
{{Now you cant Deny .. Arabs knew Physics before Raman and chandrashekhar and Mathematics before Ramanujam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}}
Yeah yeah & they invented algebra & co-ordinate geometry & Wahabbism...
Unfortunately, those bedoiuns better learn to drive a car FIRST before reading the good book or picking up an algebra textbook.
If there one palm tree in the desert; a sacred Sheikh will crash his Caddilac Eldorado into it!
Another reason why their women should be allowed to drive...or stick to blessing idiots by kicking their heads...
YOU, my friend, should reserve a 12 hr appointment with a Syed...need atleast that much time to kick some sense into 12 empty heads...
....now THAT would be a blessing!!!

Defending burqa is one thing(if done to highlight the purpose of decency in women factor)...
but it is amazing to see even Indians like Tipu being so much in love with everything Arabic and with nothing Indian..their heart and soul belongs to another land
What can one judge abt Indians and what can one do abt it..it is a shame

Will the real Naqshbandi please stand up?
There are two Naqshbandis on chowk. One writes these brilliant book and music reviews and discusses arts and literature in a most articulate and rational manner; and then there is the one who writes posts like #55. Can they be the same person?

very beautiful article read on chowk so far about islam.at best religion was a marginal and private activity ,which could no longer influence world events.now we realise this was a false prophecy.in the soviet union, after a decade of offical antheism, men and women were demanding right to pracice their faith. in the west people who have little interest inconventional doctrine and institutional churches have shown a new awareness of spirituality and the inner life. most dramatically, perhaps a radical religiosity, which we usually call``fundamentalism``,has erupted in most of the religion. it is aintensely political form of faith and some see it a grave danger to a world and civic peace. governments ignore it at their peril.yet again as so often in the past,an age of scepticism has been followed by a period of a intense religious fervour.religion seems to be an important human need which can not easily be discarded or pushed to the sidelines,no matter how rational or sophisicated our society. some will weicome this new age of faith, others will deplore it,but none of us can dismiss religion as irreleveant to the chief concern of the century.the religion insiinct is extremely powerful and can be used for good and evil.we must, therefore, understand it and examine its manifestation carefully, not only in our own society but also in other culture.

Education and Islam:
There are many problems with Islam. One of them is that it has become a 24-hour ``Occupation``; Just like ``Georgia on my mind``, it has become ``islam on my mind``; perhaps that is why, Pakistanis as muslims have more affinity towards Arabs `gift` of islam.
As someone mentioned earlier, islam lacks rational articulation not necessarily rational thinking. Sometimes I feel that many of the islamists have group thinking. Perhaps it is ritualistic but in Hinduism even though it is also ritualistic one doesn`t have to follow and one doesn`t get death penalty issued(fatwa) by fellow (hindu) citizens.
One classic example is the Burkah and women.
To this day, I don`t know why in Saudi Arabia the state requires women to wear, BLACK burkah; After all, in that searing heat, black would absorb heat and white would repel it.
So a rational thinking person if he is going to shove something like a burqah on a woman would have rationalized to wearing a white burqah.
On a side-bar, post SARS-have become a great equalizer with seeing mask wearing men/women/children in many countries.

DAWN, Karachi, Pakistan
15 June 2003 Sunday 14 Rabi-us-Saani 1424
`Pakistan first`
By Ardeshir Cowasjee
..... The government of Pakistan will have not only to find money to build an education system, but it will also have to seriously revamp the entire education curricula now operative in the country. The national curriculum objectives as set forth by the federal ministry of education in 1995 remain unchanged, eight years on. By completion of
Class V, according to this curriculum in force, children are required, inter alia, to understand Hindu-Muslim differences, identify the forces working against Pakistan and India`s evil designs, and make speeches on jihad and shahadat.
They are also expected to promote an awareness of the Kashmir issue, to observe their fellow pupils and note their reaction to the wars with India, judge their spirit while they make speeches on jihad, and note their keenness and willingness to recite tarana at school
functions. As commented Sami Mustafa in this newspaper on May 18 in his article on the subject:
``So much for teaching tolerance, objectivity and scholarship to the future generations of this country ... Sadly, it appears that the national curriculum is anything but about education. It is primarily a hopeless attempt to control young minds and compensate for the
incompetence and inability of our policymakers to come to terms with the demands of a new world, which is the individual development of each child, not the mass development of children so that they fit into a political system that is inefficient, retrogressive and
unenlightened.``
This being so, may one ask the general: what then is the difference between the ministry of education and the MMA government in Peshawar? .....
..... The present generation is doomed, as is amply illustrated by the sick happenings at the University of Punjab, overseen by an army general and an army colonel, where a professor of the Department of English is proving himself to be as intolerant, as Talibanized, and as
dangerous as is the government of the NWFP. .....
