when is the `divine help` of yours coming to rescue the North Koreans?, where one `gulag` is reputed to have 200,000 prisoners crammed in it, some of which have to sleep standing up!!

The last we check the Koreans are putting finishing touches on their real WMDs while 10-20% of their population has already starved to death. By contrast the `clear-and-present-danger` that was once iraq has yet to cough up a signle WMD!

According to the Shariyyah, the pages containing the koranic text that are not being read or used, should be burnt to avoid disrespect. The copies of the koran in the cupboards of the muslim community and in their museums today fall under that hukm.

PaagalInsaan: The Sharia you mention distorts the message of the Quran. The Quran says that it is a book to be read and understood. Not a magical icon to be venerated and worshipped like an idol. The physical Quran is immaterial. The MESSAGE of the Quran is what is important. And muslims demonstrate disrespect for the message of the Quran every time they rely upon sharia for guidance.

The loss of copies of the Quran in Baghdad is sad in the same way as the loss of 7000 year old pottery from the Baghdad museum is sad. It is an irreplaceable loss of the common heritage of all mankind.

But this loss of the Baghdad library is no loss compared to the Quranic message itself which the muslims lost centuries ago. And Islam became the same primitive, pagan religion that the Quran had been sent to replace. And muslims slipped from the forefront of human progress to the rear end. An irrational people, given to following caliphs and kings rather than their own conscience. A part of the problem, rather than a part of the solution, for the rest of the world.

The so called American Genghis are better than Saddam Hussein. Millions of Qurans which were lying in Baghdad were helpless in removing Saddam. The religious leaders who would now be given some share of political power will get a fair chance to establish the system of Quran but I bet they know nothing about any system even when they know too much of Quran. They don`t know how to use a system properly, not even their flush system. They oppose every useful system with their knowledge of Quran. However, it`s not good to burn any book. Therefore, nobody has burnt Qurans intentionally if any. Those who wish to get political power in the name of Quran are spreading such rumors. They`ll get some share in power but will never produce any positive results. They`ll keep the muslims involved in these non issues.

Jis khet say dehkan ko mayasser na ho rozi
Os khet kay her khosha e gandum ko jala do

But why they`ve burnt the Quran?
It is the biggest source of rozi for our mullas.
We have a strong faith that Quran has solution for every problem. But it`s only a faith. We`ve heard a lot like this about Quran but practically we`ve never seen anything done good with Quran. We can only blame ourselves for the results it produces in our society. This we can do even without it.

I think we should now stop bragging about Quran like stupid fanatics. We’ve already been kept way behind by our clerics who exploit our sentiments about Quran. They’re unable to give us any reasonable system from Quran with which we could compete with others. They’ve only made us follow them blindly in the name of Quran. They make us hate others. They make us hate each other, and they make us hate ourselves as well. Don’t you think that we should open our eyes and start thinking like progressive people?

That means even if one wants to one cannot figure out whether or not koranic text is ``evolving text`` or is it ``fixed`` since it was revealed. How does one define ``text that are not being read or used``? In early days I am sure some convertee might have gone back to their original religion. Or, a new convertee might be overenthusiastic about his new religion and procure too many copies. Or, grandfather dies, and then what happens to his personal copy?

What about translations? Say for example an English translation is ``text that are not being read or used``, as far as bulk of Muslims are concerned.

I have heard the story of some maintenance workers doing repair work in an ancient mosque finding old koranic texts in what looked like an ancient coffin. Western historians wanted to study but were denied access because of their possible interest in the idea of koranic text as ``evolving text`` which is anathema to muslims. I vaguely remember the story mentioning the historians` conjecture that ``burial`` of texts was preferred as a respectful discarding of texts. Is there a taboo against burning?
