TAhamad: The best joke came out during the war goes something like this. Irony is it is a true story.

A Royal Airforce helicoptor was about to land in an area where Marines were camping. As the helicoptor approached Marines took positions and started firing at it. Within few seconds they realized it is their own and stopped but as soon as the helicoptor landed, Brits came storming and started punching and cursing the Marines. Well..The author and posters have forgot to mention another area of Ethnic jokes in Pakistan(and India)...probably more jokes about Sikhs than any other ethnic group in the region. Some of them are hillarious and I enjoy but I hate when people turn a perfectly normal joke into a Sikh joke because you know it is not a genuine sikh joke but molded for sole purpose of ethnic bashing.

I was born nearly 20 years after partition but the gaali of ``yahoodi jiha na howe`` was so popular even amongst Sikhs and Hindus in Punjab that as a kid I thought this must be some kind of ugly looking barbarian people in the next village. Think of it this way Hindus and Sikhs(and Muslims too) of Punjab never had much contact or conflict with the Jews....most probably never saw a real Yahoodi..so the slur must have been invented not by some illiterate villager but by some well traveled and learned person who knew the historical significance of bashing a Jew. Now sikhs and Hindus use it only because it is part of the phrases - without knowing the real significance behind it. Most muslims probably did it for the same reason in the past....post Israel situation is different.

Hey you all, don`t wallow too much in this self critcism of being racist. This is a human trait and you will find bigots everywhere in the world.You haven`t seen anything until you have seen the racist attitudes of the orientals, the ones you call chhaptas. You think the Arabs don`t think too high of you, wait till you learn what the chinese think of you, or for that matter anybody else in the world.

Our media censors out , either voluntarily or under government advice, any reference to races. I feel that the media should depict the realities.

We should have the ability to laugh at ourselves and at the ideosyncracies of different races. This actually improves the tolerance of diferences in the society.

This issue is universal. There are Irish jokes, Check jokes and Black jokes. But the media does not push them under the rug. It plays them up in a manner that the tolerance level of the society becomes higher and it leads to a more homogenious society.

ally #15 Actually, I was just trying to be funny when I related these jokes on the pretext of condemning them. More seriously, I agree with you that we should celebrate our different ethnicities in Pakistan, and not look down upon any. I dont care much for people who go around trying to put down other ethnic groups, and it does seem that the folks the writer hangs out with are into this business of insulting other ethnic groups. I cant recall ever saying insulting words like ``Bhuka Bengali`` being used in my family when we were growing up. So, if this goes on a lot in karachi, then I pity those narrow-minded people.

And, even though I am not sure how it fits into the discussion, I wholeheartedly support anyway your idea of a secular Republic of Pakistan. An Islamic State is a contradiction in terms, a concept promoted by mullahs trying to gain power, and this concept has sabotaged our judicial system and would threaten our economic system if we had an economy.

I have a feeling that the author is Adnan Rafiq. The Indians will have a field day laughing and agreeing with the author while ignoring their own attirbutes which are similar. Lekin sometimes one has to be watchful that political correctness itself does not go haywire as it has in the states.

from all over India we ended up in Pakistan, Pakistan is a cultural mish mash of local ppl along with Indian origin ppl, South, North, East, West Indians came here in 1947, it is inevitable that there will be some kind of friction, however now we have all become (or should have become) Pakistani, and one of the many ways to rid ourselves of this racism is to look to the Pakistani identity. We should all still be very Punjabi, Bihari, Sindhi, Balochi waghera waghera, but realise that we are part of the same nation, and EQUALS in this nation just as (in theory at least) Indians are very Punjabi, Bihari, Sindhi, Balochi waghera waghera but realise that they are part of India, for the supposed greater good of everyone within the Indian union.

Your not giving one identity prominence over the other, just giving each identity its rightful place. As Punjabi, i could demand that we break away from Pakistan and join with Indian Punjab to become some kind of Punjabi nation, but that would be stupid, and unrealistic. It would make more sense to accept reality, make the best out of what we have and respect the nation and ALL its ppl, that now we find ourselves in.

Maybe we should stop being unhappy with the fact that we had to come here and mix with `others` and that the `others` should go back to where they came from i.e. India. Maybe we should remember that we all came here with the same majboori, and that the founding principle was EQUALITY FOR ALL. Maybe a secular Republic of Pakistan isn`t such a bad idea!

Zia Ahmed: Great read. You wrote a lot of aspects that I also believe are true about our ``pure`` Pakistani society. Anti-``Yahoodi``-ism is the best, as if Pakistanis have become the world leaders in knowledge about Jews, their history, and all the `Jewish conspiracies` manifesting themselves everywhere.

Needless to say, you haven`t mentioned how living in mutli-ethnic communities in the US, Canada, and the UK, we don`t think twice about insulting ``chaptas`` and ``kaala kachras`` - yet decry when anyone foists dicrimination in our direction.

The hardest pill to swallow for Pakistanis is that we really don`t matter to the rest of the Muslim world. We sit there on a high horse thinking we`re the vanguards of this grand Muslim ummah, when the average Arab probably could give a crap less if India invaded Pakistan and annhilated everybody. We`ve turned into a nation of anti-Jews because we feel a ``kinship`` to the Palestinians. How many Arabs feel a kinship to Kashmiris? How many Arabs, Iranians, and Afghans are anti-Indian or anti-Hindu because of this conflict? The answer is a miniscule number.

Some day we`ll learn. Until then, no matter how educated we are - with each racist statement, we`re on the same level as a `white trash` redneck from the Appalachians.

Also, I condemn that joke about the Arab tank that comes in one gear only, the reverse gear.
And the one about the Egyptian division that sees a lone Israeli soldier in the distance, and sends a company to fight him. And, as this most offensive joke goes, after an hour one Egyptian comes limping back and says ``It was a trap. There were TWO of them!.

If you or anyone else knows of any ethnic jokes, please post them so they may be vehemently condemned as well.
