Prejudice and hatred are so damaging. I am so glad I did not grow up with it. But yes, I was aware of it. This article is a sober reminder of the work ahead of us. Love, Tolerance and acceptance begin at home, like charity.

Speaking generically isnt racsim - mainly the exclusion of an `other` an innate inevitability given the constraints to tolerance, combined with bigotry. Racism - a prejudice or intolerence manifests it self not just on ethnic basis but class, colour, and conformity or the lack of.

Its a pity that you`ll have to go all the way to Karachi to hear the sound of ``Ghalap Shoo``. No wonder you spend so much time at chowk.

Thanks for the info, I was unaware of the origins of the term. The Bengal famine is definitely one of the unsung accomplishments of the British.

``You are a good human being and a bad Muslim``
I`m not fully convinced that the two are mutually exclusive.

You make a good point. How our racism adapts to new societies is a whole other topic. For some reason, ``phidda`` was in vogue (as opposed to ``chapta``) when I was in school.

Thank you! You`ve made my parents quite happy at the ``true muslim`` bit :)

``Rascism like all human inadequacies anger hate hunger thirst isnt confined to any country continent or group .``
Absolutely - doesn`t make it right though.

Zia Ahmed and all,
My elders once told me that term ``Bhooka Bungaali`` originated during famine of 1940s. More people died during that famine than in world war II. My maternal grand uncle used to reside in Calcutta and my mother remembers him talking about people living on tree bark.

Zia, this was awesome! well done my friend :) may you write more and more and may you be forever happy and have as much of everything you ever wanted!
As for the people who think you are being too ``sensitive`` they won`t be saying that when you are rewarded for your good work (by woman kind, f that is your thing) and all the minorities Pakistanis in particular and Muslims in general oppress.
You are a good human being and a bad Muslim (the two are diamaterically opposite value systems therefore being good at one necessarily means being bad at the other). It is good to stand up for the weak particularly when they are so mindlessly obliterated in every Islamic country. By standing up for the weak I don`t mean Saddam`s regime or his human shields. By standing up for the weak I don`t mean Arafat and his suicide bombers. By supporting the weak I don`t mean Abu Sayyaf and his kidnapping, mall-bombing terrorists. By supporting the weak I don`t mean the Kashmiri Mujahids who shoot 14 year old girls in the legs for wearing jeans.
And after supporting the aforementioned ``weak`` Muslims often wonder why they are in so much trouble.

I did not understand your post. I think the issue was about tolerance and amity between different races; and how to promote it.
The article was not about the national morality, international relations, national interests or foreign policy of different nations.

A Pathan guy knocks the door. The man in the house asks: ``who are you?`` The guy replies: ``Bahadur Khan.`` The man asks second question: ``what is the name of your father?`` The guy replies: ``Sher Khan.`` The man asks again: ``what is the name of your grandfather?`` The guy replies: ``Dilawar Khan.`` The man says: ``why don`t you just step in. The foor is open.`` The guy replies: ``I am scared of the dog sitting in front of the your door.`` The man from inside shouts: ``shame on you. Look at the names of your elders? Didn`t you go for Jihad in Afghanistan and defeated Russians?``. The guy says: `` Russians were worse than dogs.``
One weekend, Ali and his wife were up in the mountains and had been out for a walk. As soon as they got in, Ali complained that his hands were cold. ``Go on,`` said his wife, ``you can put your hands between my legs to warm them up.`` A little while later, Ali went out to get some firewood, and complained of cold hands when he came back.
``You can put your hands between my legs,`` said his wife, so he did. A little later, he went to visit his buddy Miraj Din. When he
came back, he said his hand were cold. Finally, Ali`s wife exploded.
``Don`t your ears ever get cold?``
Once Ali was travelling on a train. He felt sleepy so he gave the guy sitting opposite him on the train 20 rupees to wake him up when the station arrives. This guy was a barber, and he felt that for 20 rupees , the Bhola deserved more service. So, when Ali fell asleep, the barber quietly shaved off his beard. When the station arrived, Ali woke up, and went home. Reaching home, he went to wash his face, and suddenly screamed when he saw the mirror. Said his wife `` What`s the matter?`` Replied he ``The cheat on the train has taken my 20 rupees and woke up someone else``

tahmed, here is another one.
From the interior of Punjab, Meraj Din father of Gulzar Din goes to Afghanistan for jehad against the Soviets. Months turn to years and years to decades but he doesn`t return. Gulzar Din grows up without really knowing his father.
One fine day, Meraj Din suddenly shows up. The entire family, rather the entire village is delirious. After celebrations and festivites are over, he takes Gulzar Din aside for a man to man talk. Gulzar`s first question was, of course, what took you so long dad?
Meraj Din sighs, and responds with this Persian-Punjabi verse:
Jaan-e-Pidr, Puttar Dil Pazir-o-Benazir,
ki dassaN --
Dukhtar-e-Qandhar ast
manind-e-Anaar ast
seena sang ast
ch__t tang ast
aashiq me kunad
awaaz aanind
``Aahista, Aahista -- Aahista, Aahista``
Maadar-e-Gulzaar ast
kullahoo bay-kaar ast
seena thal thal ast
ch__t dal dal ast
aashiq me kunad
awaaz aanind
``Ghalap-shoo, Ghalap-shoo``
I can post a translation if someone is interested. Meanwhile, tahmed sahib, please don`t ask me about ``Ghalap-shoo, Ghalap-shoo``, just listen closely when you make love next time ;-)

hamidm #21 Here is another joke I condemn (about, lets say, pathans): How many pathans does it take to eat a dead dog on the road?
Answer: Three. One to eat it, two to watch out for passing trucks.

Agreed.
At one time I used to visit Bengladesh, and would advise my Bengaladeshi friends that the best revenge for 1971 was to become better off than us Pakistanis. Everyone would come out ahead in that kind of revenge, even us Pakistanis.

sameerjb: THen of course there is the pathan who tells the hindu to lower his moustaches before him. Hindu refuses. Pathan says, we fight to the death then. Hindu says, fine. But first lets go home kill our families so when one of us dies his family does not suffer. Pathan says, good thinking. They return after an hour.
Pathan says, OK, the families are taken care of. Now lets fight now. Hindu says, I started thinking...why kill my poor wife and children over a damned moustache. So, here, I will snip it off.

One of the best examples of racism is the use of the word ``Pathans`` No pashtun/Pakhtun calls himself a Pathan.

shankar #19 You are too generous with your praise of the Ahmeds on chowk, although I hasten to add that you are indeed an insightful and perceptive person.
Actually, I was condemning those ethnic jokes for purposes of hearing some new ones, not for purposes of political correctness, as you may have noticed by now. Looks like that got people interested too. We got some of Chowks Finest (dullabhatti, hamidm, ras, not to mention Ali_1) to cough up some good ones. Yes, we even got Ali_1 to come out of the woodwork (should ``termite`` be coined as a new insult for our karachi brethern in honor of brother Ali_1 coming out of the woodwork? but I shouldnt be too nasty too karachiites, given that in a couple of hours I shall be checking out what will no doubt be outstanding halim and other karachi stuff at a friends house).
As for us pakis getting our ass kicked in cricket, in war, in democracy, in economics. Hey, no sweat. We take a lickin` and still keep on tickin`.

ali_1 #28 Good one sir. Never heard this one before. Here is an ancient one:
Man has a panjabi and a persian wife. Sleeps with the persian, and she wakes up early morning and wishes the man a good morning. Man asks, ``How do you know morning is here?`` and she replies: ``because the sound of the koel is to be heard, the morning breeze brings the promise of a new day... (and other poetic stuff).``
Sleeps with his panjabi wife the following night, who too wakes up early morning and wishes the man a good morning. Man asks, ``How do you know morning is here?`` She replies: ``I have to go to the loo``.

tahmed: [If you or anyone else knows of any ethnic jokes, please post them so they may be vehemently condemned as well.]
Ok, here is another one for you to condemn.
Two punjabis, as per their tradition and heritage, were answering the call of nature in the sugarcane farm (gannay da khait) early one morning.
Imam Din alias Gama, squatting quite close to Fazal Din alias Phajja, was concentrating on his bowel movements while tinkering with this finely carved copper lota when he suddenly heard a noise.
``oye phajjaya! tooN waaj suni?`` (Hey Phajja, did you hear that noise).
Phajja turned pale and almost screamed: ``Gamay! o summnay vaikh`` (Gama, look over there), and to their horror they saw a tiger standing a few feet from them probably trying to choose one of them for breakfast.
They sat there for some time, quivering and shuddering. Gama asked, ``O phajjya, tainooN sher tooN dar lagda hai`` (Phajja, are you afraid of the tiger).
Phajja stuttered, ``Na-na nahi, bilkul nahi, jatt kissay cheez to nahi darda`` (No, not at all. Nothin scares a jatt).
``Tey fir jhallya, apni bund dho, meri kyon dhooN laga haiN``, remarked Gama. (Then wash your own arse you fool, why are you washing mine!)
More later, but only if you condemn this vehemently enough ;-)

dullabhatti:
Two Sikhs were introduced to each other for the first time.
Sikh 1 said: ``you look just like my wife, except for the moustache.``
Sikh 2 replied: ``How come? I don`t even have moustache. I am clean shaven``.
Sikh 1: ``not you, but my wife does.``

Sad but very true article.
I wish that Pakistanis would notice that while they are indulging in
such name calling, the Banya and the Yahood are far outpacing them
and the Bengali is about to.
In the end the only ``Bhookas`` one can see is the one in the mirror,
all the Tilyars, Akhrots, Daggas, Sindhis and Baluchis.

TAhamad: The best joke came out during the war goes something like this. Irony is it is a true story.
A Royal Airforce helicoptor was about to land in an area where Marines were camping. As the helicoptor approached Marines took positions and started firing at it. Within few seconds they realized it is their own and stopped but as soon as the helicoptor landed, Brits came storming and started punching and cursing the Marines. A Brit said`` you fu*king yanks..when was the last time you idiots saw an Iraqi on a helicoptor?``
Well..The author and posters have forgot to mention another area of Ethnic jokes in Pakistan(and India)...probably more jokes about Sikhs than any other ethnic group in the region. Some of them are hillarious and I enjoy but I hate when people turn a perfectly normal joke into a Sikh joke because you know it is not a genuine sikh joke but molded for sole purpose of ethnic bashing.
What you call a Sikh boyfriend?
ans: Her-pal Singh.
ps: that reminds me where is our love - Harpreet?

I was born nearly 20 years after partition but the gaali of ``yahoodi jiha na howe`` was so popular even amongst Sikhs and Hindus in Punjab that as a kid I thought this must be some kind of ugly looking barbarian people in the next village. Think of it this way Hindus and Sikhs(and Muslims too) of Punjab never had much contact or conflict with the Jews....most probably never saw a real Yahoodi..so the slur must have been invented not by some illiterate villager but by some well traveled and learned person who knew the historical significance of bashing a Jew. Now sikhs and Hindus use it only because it is part of the phrases - without knowing the real significance behind it. Most muslims probably did it for the same reason in the past....post Israel situation is different.

Hey you all, don`t wallow too much in this self critcism of being racist. This is a human trait and you will find bigots everywhere in the world. You haven`t seen anything until you have seen the racist attitudes of the orientals, the ones you call chhaptas. You think the Arabs don`t think too high of you, wait till you learn what the chinese think of you, or for that matter anybody else in the world.

Our media censors out , either voluntarily or under government advice, any reference to races. I feel that the media should depict the realities.
We should have the ability to laugh at ourselves and at the ideosyncracies of different races. This actually improves the tolerance of diferences in the society.
This issue is universal. There are Irish jokes, Check jokes and Black jokes. But the media does not push them under the rug. It plays them up in a manner that the tolerance level of the society becomes higher and it leads to a more homogenious society.

aw cmaaaan tahmedji !:)
yes; yes...prejudice is something you should be ashamed of as Islam preaches egalitarianism...& yes many Pakistani muslims are anything BUT egalitarian & yes many Pakistanis have given the ``Islamic Republic`` of Pakistan a bad name in the eyes of Allah...& on & on & on...
but but....get a frikkin` life; hahn?!
This is Chowk; not bloomin` Mecca, for Chrissake!
I mean...what is with you ``Ahmed``(s); anyways..?!
I mean...first there was Bilalji (may his soul rest in peace); then YOU & now Zia AHMED...taking a whip & flogging yourself & your kith & kin for being ``human``!!!
Mujhe lagta hai, ki yeh Mia Zia aap ka hi jaatwallah hai!!
I just learnt that the Syeds are direct descendants of the Prophet (pbuh).
Seems to me; you Ahmeds are direct descendants of Allah Himself !!!
Dunno why; but you Ahmeds on Chowk seem to polish Allah`s apple pretty darn well!!
What ``is-special`` mould did Allah make the ``Ahmed`` souls out of?
I will henceforth HUMBLY pray to Almighty to give these Ahmeds a slightly thicker skin...er..because HE made most other human beings (muslims or otherwise) PREJUDICED!! Prejudice is ``hard wired`` into all our minds ...& no religion on earth has been powerful enough to expunge that from our souls.
Its a human FAILING...like greed, lust, envy etc...
OK OK...if that makes you pious monotheists mad...SATAN gave those qualities to humans..OK? (including the pious sand niggers who gave Islam to the world).
Damn it!!! I hate it when I have to agree with that imbecilic 12-headed moron....sigh..even Satan performs miracles; I guess..
I mean... if 12 head personifies an Indian muslim (at least thats the ..er..``persona`` his brainless ``heads`` project on Chowk)...then Pakistani muslims are a million times smarter than their Indian counterparts...And everyonce in a while (blue moon); he makes sense too!....(either that or I`m beginning to get my screw loose for agreeing with #5)!
Yo! I`m a snivelling, cowardly, cunning, devious hindu brahmin dont-wannabe-but-cant-help-it penis god worshipping bhakt!!
And I`m PROUD of it!
and if any of you handsome Pakistani wounded-but-proud lion musalmans have a problem with that..you can KISS my heeng smelling oily ass...
facts are facts guys...you proud Paki musalmans have been getting your sorry butts whupped--again & again by us cunning banyas these past 50+ yrs...eventhough you THINK you are smarter or stronger or handsomer or braver than us....
heheheh..but youre too proud to even publicly ADMIT it!
Pakistanis win the World Cup in ``Excuse mara-oing``; everytime Hindians beat them...ESP in a war!!
Seems like your whole AWAM (but NOT your idiotic Generals) KNOWS it, but juuuust cant bring themselves to admit that you guys are no match for us....
Best of all, even when the rest of the World knows (& says) that compared to Pakistan, India has a much brighter future (which, incidentally isnt saying MUCH)...even if Pakistanis wistfully admit that; they then sigh & declare a MORAL victory over Hindians! HAHAHAHA!!!
It is you AHMEDS who have taught me that Islam is a truely GREAT religion...but Islam`s WORST naseeb is that the disciples of Islam turned out to be..gasp..MUSLIMS!!!!
Comeover to the Hindian side, O yea Ahmeds..our Indian muslims need level headed guys like you. These Pakistani muslims are BEYOND help!!
Cheers!

Cheers!

ally #15 Actually, I was just trying to be funny when I related these jokes on the pretext of condemning them. More seriously, I agree with you that we should celebrate our different ethnicities in Pakistan, and not look down upon any. I dont care much for people who go around trying to put down other ethnic groups, and it does seem that the folks the writer hangs out with are into this business of insulting other ethnic groups. I cant recall ever saying insulting words like ``Bhuka Bengali`` being used in my family when we were growing up. So, if this goes on a lot in karachi, then I pity those narrow-minded people.
And, even though I am not sure how it fits into the discussion, I wholeheartedly support anyway your idea of a secular Republic of Pakistan. An Islamic State is a contradiction in terms, a concept promoted by mullahs trying to gain power, and this concept has sabotaged our judicial system and would threaten our economic system if we had an economy.

TAhmed: LOL!! hahaha. Now I understand the ``Ibkay maar`` reference of Khamkhwa in the Yashwant Sinha board. Thanks.
I have a feeling that the author is Adnan Rafiq. The Indians will have a field day laughing and agreeing with the author while ignoring their own attirbutes which are similar. Lekin sometimes one has to be watchful that political correctness itself does not go haywire as it has in the states.

`referred to as a mattarwa by these damned northern barbarians` do you mean the Punjabi ppl, cause we are north of Sindh, if thats who you mean its seems hypocritical of you to condemn these jokes but speak of others in such a derogatory manner...
from all over India we ended up in Pakistan, Pakistan is a cultural mish mash of local ppl along with Indian origin ppl, South, North, East, West Indians came here in 1947, it is inevitable that there will be some kind of friction, however now we have all become (or should have become) Pakistani, and one of the many ways to rid ourselves of this racism is to look to the Pakistani identity. We should all still be very Punjabi, Bihari, Sindhi, Balochi waghera waghera, but realise that we are part of the same nation, and EQUALS in this nation just as (in theory at least) Indians are very Punjabi, Bihari, Sindhi, Balochi waghera waghera but realise that they are part of India, for the supposed greater good of everyone within the Indian union.
Your not giving one identity prominence over the other, just giving each identity its rightful place. As Punjabi, i could demand that we break away from Pakistan and join with Indian Punjab to become some kind of Punjabi nation, but that would be stupid, and unrealistic. It would make more sense to accept reality, make the best out of what we have and respect the nation and ALL its ppl, that now we find ourselves in.
Maybe we should stop being unhappy with the fact that we had to come here and mix with `others` and that the `others` should go back to where they came from i.e. India. Maybe we should remember that we all came here with the same majboori, and that the founding principle was EQUALITY FOR ALL. Maybe a secular Republic of Pakistan isn`t such a bad idea!

Zia Ahmed: Great read. You wrote a lot of aspects that I also believe are true about our ``pure`` Pakistani society. Anti-``Yahoodi``-ism is the best, as if Pakistanis have become the world leaders in knowledge about Jews, their history, and all the `Jewish conspiracies` manifesting themselves everywhere.
Needless to say, you haven`t mentioned how living in mutli-ethnic communities in the US, Canada, and the UK, we don`t think twice about insulting ``chaptas`` and ``kaala kachras`` - yet decry when anyone foists dicrimination in our direction.
The hardest pill to swallow for Pakistanis is that we really don`t matter to the rest of the Muslim world. We sit there on a high horse thinking we`re the vanguards of this grand Muslim ummah, when the average Arab probably could give a crap less if India invaded Pakistan and annhilated everybody. We`ve turned into a nation of anti-Jews because we feel a ``kinship`` to the Palestinians. How many Arabs feel a kinship to Kashmiris? How many Arabs, Iranians, and Afghans are anti-Indian or anti-Hindu because of this conflict? The answer is a miniscule number.
Some day we`ll learn. Until then, no matter how educated we are - with each racist statement, we`re on the same level as a `white trash` redneck from the Appalachians.

dullabhatti #8 Just as I most vigorously condemn such ethnic jokes about Zia sahib`s karachi people, I equally vehemently condemn application of this joke to the Arabs.
Also, I condemn that joke about the Arab tank that comes in one gear only, the reverse gear.
And the one about the Egyptian division that sees a lone Israeli soldier in the distance, and sends a company to fight him. And, as this most offensive joke goes, after an hour one Egyptian comes limping back and says ``It was a trap. There were TWO of them!.
If you or anyone else knows of any ethnic jokes, please post them so they may be vehemently condemned as well.

So the East India Company army that conquered Punjab (& Lahore) in 1849 (& Muslim Daggas fought against them) had a lot of Poorbis. From then comes the rhyme:
hindustaani baRe mastaani (actually, it is prob another word that rhymes)
akaR akaR kar chalte haiN
do paise ka tel le kar
daaRhi moonch pe malte haiN
beevi boli paisa bhejo
bachche bhooke marte haiN
bolte haiN ke marne do
ham kaun si parva karte haiN

``This joke I found most offensive, for example: The UP fellow is slapped on the face. He says ``Bhayya, Ibkay Mar tow naani ka doodh yaad kara dooN ga``. The UP guy gets slapped on the other side of the face, and responds responds: ``Ibkay Maar to BataaooN ga``. And so forth.
``
Isn`t that joke about Arabs these days?

Zia Ahmed: In relating (for purposes of deploring, I am sure) the various ethnic slurs in Pakistan and deploring how panjabis are dhhagas and pathans are thugs, you forgot the most uncivilized ethnic slurs against your own people Let me complete the picture, therefore:
I most vehemently, condemn, deplore and slate the way you folks are referred to as tillears. I bet you dont look like a tillear at all. I also vociferously denounce how you would be referred to as a mattarwa by these damned northern barbarians. Not only that, I plan to write a whole article condemning jokes about the karachi bhayyas. This joke I found most offensive, for example: The UP fellow is slapped on the face. He says ``Bhayya, Ibkay Mar tow naani ka doodh yaad kara dooN ga``. The UP guy gets slapped on the other side of the face, and responds responds: ``Ibkay Maar to BataaooN ga``. And so forth.
I think you will join me in condemning this most reprehensible ethnic joke.

Bravo Zia! I think we the Pakistanis are the racist people of all!
I remember my g`pa an ex-General`s words to him `Bloody Bangolis`
were the menace. He told me when the Pak Army used to caught
Bangolis they used to say ``We are Punzabi`s not Dogs`` !
I find that kinda funny but come again its bad. Racism is everywhere
in Pakistan, once i had an arguement with my principal and he told
me `your knowledge comes from the Yahoodi Books` and I was damned!
We can`t ever tolerate opposition and we tends to get frustrated. Remember
Salman Rushdie Episode? Well the Muslims made Salman Rushdie my
giving him extra importance the right way to counter his propoganda would
have been to write a book. We just can`t tolerate opposition. When I talk
of Isreal here people thinks `I am too american` and when I talk about
Arabs they call me a `Kafir` i dont get it? ....we are hypocrites so
we always blame on others. I was called a ``Hindus-Taura` in Islamabad!
and i ignored coz` such people should be ignored coz they just want
importance...!

....... i don`t know about the rest of them, but here is what khushal khan khattak said about his (and my) people about four hundred years ago ....
The dogs of the Mohmands are better than the Bangash,
Though the Mohmands themselves are a thousand times worse than the dogs.
The Warrakzais are the scavengers of the Afridis,
Though the Afridis, one and all, are but scavengers themselves.
This is the truth of the best of the dwellers in the land of Pathans,
Of those worse than these who would say that they were men?
...... look at afghanistan and the frontier today and then tell me he was wrong ..............sometimes it is okay to call a spade a spade (no pun intended) .........
