Imaginative but a bit depressing. Isn’t there a way we could get out of our present state of minds short of a miracle?

I intended this `stroy` to mean different, to different people. To interpret it to mean `our` present depressing state of minds (due to the headlong dive we seem to be taking towards an abyss of technology based progress) is entirely justified. I personally come across writings of many credible thinkers who are wary of this approach to development. Ongoing experiments with genetic engineering and efforts to clone humans are a case in point, where the prior understanding of the moral implications are taking a back seat.
On whether a miracle is the only way to change the present state of affairs (and hence the state of our minds), your guess is as good as mine.
Other than that I wrote it earlier this year in winter (of the Canadian variety that is) so if depressing, you know what to blame.... ;-)
By the way I have heard atleast four different intrepretations of this story so far (and I should admit my perverse satisfaction).
