I don’t see any reason for all the commotion that this post has created—it is just another well-written article with a very interesting title, presumably the reason for thousands of hits…I am not too sure if all these people checked this article out for purely literary reasons…and as for the interactors, one or two in particular, it seems as if they are out there to establish their intellectual prowess more than any thing else…
As for the issue at hand, I believe it to be genuine and deserving due attention…but like # 298 said it is not that bad…for all those charge brigadiers I have one thing to say...surely there are a couple of hundred thousand men in this land of ours that can lay claim to gender superiority, however there are millions who would prefer to have born a woman rather than a man or better yet not born at all…have anyone here heard the term ‘bonded labor’ or have seen what the ‘bhatta (kiln) workers’ have to go through day in and day out….I would suggest that the next time the NRI/P visit their homelands they take some time off from their vacations and look up some up of these men….I am sure they will surprised at what they find…and as for the champions of this cause…in order to change the mindsets one has to lead by example and not churn out reams and reams of paper to prove your commitment to the cause…any cause for that matter!

``...There are structures in this city that celebrate the male form; structures that declare male power. Military structures that shout out their masculinity - that celebrate the phallus. National symbols that kiss the sky in their entire erect splendor....``
ummm... Haven`t seen the show(?) and am no architect either, but I guess mostly humans don`t wants to live in burrows. Skyscraper etc. are erections [architectural term, no pun intened] that simply make the best use of space on this planet. Besides, no offence, but who would want to visit a Slit-e-Pakistan?
Freud was right to some extend, but like he supposedly said, sometimes, a banana is just a banana :-)
You may have a point but you`ve gone a bit too far in your rationalization.
C`mon, Its not that bad.

[Unkalji,
You deserve a vacation.]
Didn`t you recently say I must be on vacation because I was posting too often? That proves my point about you having the attention span of a gnat.
[Don`t forget your medication for that (as yet mild) psychosis. Make sure the doctor you visit is wearing a ``pooNool``. ]
I suppose this is your way of drumming up business for that witch doctor Headshrinker.
Anyway, the only ones who need to be de-programmed are the followers of Father Big Man, the Great Intellectual and Doctor Artist Leader.... this includees you.
Be sure to collect some vibhuthi and kumkum as prasad at the tomb of The Great Intellectual. Apply them to your forehead as you repeat the words of Father Big Man ``Those who believe in God are fools``.

Soysauce,
I`ll consider your offer of reading my article if you read the book Nothing Sacred. And not write a review of it.

Samina,
Asking questions is of course part of discussion. But this was way one sided. You kept asking and asking. Asking questions also is easy. Coming up with answers ain`t.
I`ll read your essay if you`ll first read Greer`s Sex and Destiny and write a review of it. Talk to you in a month.
Unkalji,
You deserve a vacation. You`re starting to sound like a parody of your ole bigotted self. Time to get recharged, tip your muslim driver and come back seething with anger at all and sundry. Just don`t kill yourself with all that high BP. Don`t forget your medication for that (as yet mild) psychosis. Make sure the doctor you visit is wearing a ``pooNool``. Else he might poison you.

[Ask your friends for lessons in comprehension. That would be a good start.]
I agree that I will need a special course to comprehend Dravidian Logic or the Red-Yellow-Green primary color scheme used by TV sets designed by The Great Intellectual Elder Brother University.
[BTW, i`ll be in the old country too. Hope to avoid you there. Bon voyage!]
Not a problem. I know your itinerary: Tomb of the Great Intellectual, Khushbhoo Temple, visit to Rajnikanth`s home trying to get a glimpse of your action hero through the bushes and perhaps a stop at the gates of the home of Doctor Artist Leader. I have no intentions of visiting such places.
Beat up a couple of Dalits to keep them in their place.

Soysauce,
Yes...I see how throwing out questions could be a terrible thing in a discussion...esp. if they are aimed at clarifying assumptions, generalizations, etc.
Did you actually read the article I posted on the VM conference in Afghanistan? Or is it just easier to name call?

Samina,
So this is what all your high-faluting reading has led up to. Snide, oblique remarks. I guess all you can do is throw out questions and insults and threaten to post your resume as if anybody cared. Sad.

I will be in India in a couple of days and I shall take your advice about empiricism and ask a few guys what they think of the Resrve Bank of India`s policy of buying US dollars to manipulate the rupee-dollar exchange ratio. Any answer I get should be highly illuminating since I don`t really know aything about currency manipulation.

[Empiricism dear unkalji, give it a try some time...
Even an uneducated peasant recognizes inflation when he sees it. ]
So I guess you strike up casual conversations with men-on-the-street about the Money Supply M1, the Fed`s discount rate and the EFFECTS of these two variables for a start on the gross domestic product of the USA.
The fact that somebody pays more for a bar of soap than he did a year ago and complains about it doesn`t mean how exactly the policies of the Fed have resulted in this price increase.
In fact, since most of the goods have gone down in price (you could buy a CD Discman or equivalent from $15 upwards and the model I paid $99 for in 1998 now sells for $39), the real danger is that of deflation. Now, I am sure you have heard people complaining about the dangers of deflation!
Go back to Fauxnews and listen to some talking heads. They aim their talk at people like you... those with the attention span of a gnat with a mental capacity to boot.

Harimau/Stuka :
My feeling is that a reasonably intelligent person, with some amount of education and
a discerning mind, is able to understand and appreciate most issues that we confront
in our daily life. Even more academic issues, once they are clearly enunciated, can
be understood without much trouble.

If one is not a Pol Sci major, how would you expect someone to understand the EFFECT of policies.... Ad Nauseum..
Why have democracy then? Maybe you support dictatorship by Technocrats and Acadamics?
