Bangladesh has pride and honour--their foreign minister demanded respect and dignity for its muslims in US post-911 & Ashcroft & got it, while the Paki anglicised-makhee of a foreign minister & later Muchharraf, the machhar were being flitted by whitehouse minions.
India has pride & honour--with its prime minister who writes hindi poetry and speaks english in U.P-accent,. walks & talks like a villager from India. Connects with the multitudes & majority.
Myanmaar has honour & dignity. Afghanistan, beyond Kabul, has honour & dignity.
Except for Malaysia & Iran--all muslim countries ruled by machhar types, pregnant-ducks-in-uniforms, are NOT treated with honour and dignity by ANYONE.
Never ever confuse progress & success with riches. USA is respected (feared) for its ability to summon its presidents to its of law and inquisition. If you think it is its armament & money , you are mistaken. USSR never commanded this respect even though they were ahead in space program at one time and had a large army and army as well.
Sultan of Brunei might qualify for great honour and dignity--but we all know the buffoon that he is considered by all.

Glad to hear you at Chowk, Khalid. And reading all these business lectures and political rants and raves, I am more convinced to study History even deeper. What a perpetual reality we are living in.

Bangladesh never created Taliban or provided logistical support for the Al Qaida. Bangladesh was never the recipient of a friend or foe ultimatum from USA. Let us not compare Pakistan with Bangladesh. Musharraf did the right thing after Sep-11 agreeing to US demands. This is coming from an Indian who does not like Musharraf. I get no happiness in seeing illiterate Pakistanis dying due to the stupidity of their elite.
`` India has pride & honour--with its prime minister who writes hindi poetry and speaks english in U.P-accent,. walks & talks like a villager from India. Connects with the multitudes & majority. ``
Vajyapee is a worthy prime minister. It is a reflection of a democratic process in India.
`` Myanmaar has honour & dignity. Afghanistan, beyond Kabul, has honour & dignity.``
Check Amnesty International reports on Burma. Their abuse of human rights makes everyone look tame.
`` Except for Malaysia & Iran--all muslim countries ruled by machhar types, pregnant-ducks-in-uniforms, are NOT treated with honour and dignity by ANYONE. ``
For all the bombastic rhetoric from Mahathir, Malaysia rolls a red carpet for Western companies and investors.

I never confuse money with progress. I am aware of Gulf Arab states. Russia commanded respect because they had a fearsome military with nukes and missiles. Of course they had other problems.

``largest state in the indian union is about to fall into the hands of socialists. what do you have to say about that? ``
UP and Bihar are beyond the pale. Waisey, BJP has made politically wise move. Elections are coming soon. The scheduled caste vote will go to Mayawati. The Muslim and Yadav vote will go to ``Maulana`` Mulayam. The BJP will start the temple agitation again. The Brahmins and Thakurs will then go to the BJP. The BJP is hoping that it will emerge as the single largest party. The Congress has been a spent force in UP for quite some time. They tried to please everyone and pleased no one. It is a repeat of the same drama. I will only be surprised if some sort of caste consolidation takes place and one party wins absolute majority. I would not be surprised if after all this drama again BJP and BSP get together.
That is the beuty of cowbelt politics. In UP, the Brahims and Choodas are together keeping Muslims and Yadavs out. In Bihar Muslims and Yadavs are togther keeping Brahmins and Choodas out. A new issue is needed to alter caste combinations.

If mushharraf had done what he did of his own accord and not post-911 only then he could claim some credit. Prior to that he was a pariah.
Mahathirs foreign investment policy is in keeping with his desire to serve his nation and not to please outsiders.
generally, we are on the same wavelength.
The tragedy is that the hole dug by these absolute rulers, even with sham elections and referenda to please foreign masters, eventually proves to be their own grave.
A hardworking and honest Pakistani is looked down & scorned by these `educated-delites`. he bureaucracy and military despise all those instituitions which have roots in the soil--like shopkeepers, agriculturists, masjids, and tradesmen.
Everything written here is for Pakistani readership as well. I hope you understand that.
Thanks for your input.

re: Honor and Dignity
Talking of Honor and Dignity (H and D), that much touted word, i hear Pak govt (Mushy to be precise, as there is no govt in Pak) has decided to recruit foreign teachers to ``bring with them a modern and progressive outlook, with the latest knowledge in priority areas where expertise is lacking within the country.``
Wonder how much loss of H and D that involves. Perhaps none.

#13: Within those three years, he should have de-feudalised Pakistan, and held open elections, with all individuals with even an iota of corruption on their records, banned from politics.
He could have de-feudalised Pakistan but no general is going to do that. As for elections with our current corrupt politicians banned, it would have been a diasaster pr wise. Every foreign news channel would have its own banned pakistani politician crying in public on how the Musharraf regime destroyed his sainted life`s work and the fraud elections he`s hoisting on an unsuspecting public who obviously can`t know anything without his porty saintliness. Bhutto has already been doing this for a while now, and Nawaz also started before the Saudi`s shut him up. These two are relatively more seasoned/smarter politicians, the thought of all the other idiots pontificating on foreign tv/media is enough to make one sick.
Russia commanded respect because they had a fearsome military with nukes and missiles.
Russia still has more Nukes than the US and no one respects it much any longer, expecially the US.
Interestingly, in all of this, MMA is the only party that is pushing the Constitution.
The MMA doesn`t have much else to push. The talibanization drives they conduct without debate once in power as demonstrated in the NWFP. On TV, a reporter asked Fazul-ur-Rahman about the MMA`s views and action on education in the NWFP. He replied that they had more important things to worry about. The MMA does have people involved who talk about and actively push issues like education, health etc. but the top leadership doesn`t place much importance to them. I don`t think a MMA approved and educational system would be much good anyways.

I dont think that Mushraf is stuck in a rut, as a matter of fact it is him who has stuck everybody else in a rut. The kind of top down lawlessness that prevails in Paksitani society suits the despots like him perfectly well. In order to keep this lawlessness intact he uses coercion (Quisling) and threats (NAB) to corrupt people. Thus starting a chain reaction that tricles down even to the most disposessed of the society. And that has created a culture in Paksitan where as the daylight begins people from street sweepers to the President start doing everything in their capabilities to weaken this country.
It is the basic principle of establishment of rule of law that it is imposed on the self first. If rule of law is imposed properly, Mushraf faces the gallows according to the constitution of 1973, which he violated. I think he wouldn`t like that. People greeted Musharaf by dancing in the streets not because they liked Mushsraf`s face better than that of bari tind but because they were sick and tired of the top down lawlessness of nawazsharif and his appointed inquisitors and henchmen. People have now nowhere to turn to; there is no shoulder to cry on. That is called rut.

Would you rather prefer the Honor and Dignity of backwardness?? I am afraid only Mullah Omar would agree with your post. Real honor and dignity is when everybody looks up to you, not just your own people.
Prophet Muhammad taught his people: Seek Knowledge, even if you have to go to China. He also taught Muslims that the ink of a scholar is holier than the blood of a martyr. It seems Musharraf is living up to his expectations. Instead of importing foreign Jihadis, he is finally importing foreign scholars.
When Muslims ruled the world, they were also leaders in the realm of ideas and technology. Then Europe lived in the Dark Ages, while the Islamic world produced scientists, mathematicians and philosophers. Jews and Christians would travel to Baghdad, Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem to seek knowledge.
The Europeans did not feel any indignity in seeking knowledge from foreign (Muslim)teachers. Ultimately, they took that knowledge to new levels, reformed themselves and ushered in the Rennaissance. In a span of 600 years, they transformed themselves from ``ignorant barbarians`` into ``knowlege leaders``.
Muslims and all other civilizations should follow their example. There is no shame, only pride in learning from a learned person, regardless of nationality/religion.

Urstruly has a valid point, because there is a reason to all this insanity in Pakistan and if I understand the game plan, it will continue for the next four years till the time of this parliament is over. Musharraf has not checkmated himself, because I honestly think that all of this is intentional. The last three years, I have been studying his actions and reading up on his past and one thing is certain, he is a maverick. His style of politics is more instintive than than it is delibrate. This grid lock is delibrate to show case the failure of the parliament, i.e. the politican and blame of Musharraf being justified, the politicans have not entirely been without blame in this matter.
Whether this is a pony and cattle show is not as important as letting this cattle show proceed. The parliament must be allowed to finish its term and new elections held and if the same happens, then it should be tolerated. What is important is not to gloat that Musharraf is tasting his own medicine, but to see that we have a parliament that can finish its term and for that to happen, both the politicans and Musharraf will have to realize that are in this quagmire together.
Ciao
