Re : rsridhar #162

`` Hindus in India also did not protest against the brutality of Idi Amin against Indians (mostly hindu businessmen) in the 70s, atrocity against hindus in Fiji etc. For the same reason. ``

Is that something to be proud of ? Does it help us in expanding our business world wide ? Thank god this policy has changed. We recently had some problem with Malaysia and the reaction was very different.

Faruk

Re : SR #178

Sohail,
Education for a certain number of Nepalese, Bhutanese and Bangladeshis is free in India. In fact they get a stipend to take care of living expenses. Your friend might want to check out the scholarships provided by the Indian govt.

Faruk

Now that Sharon has gone home, those who objected so vehemently to his visit can have a cup of tea and a lie-down. Given the circumstances in which he left, it looks like there will never be peace in Israel/Palestine(why do we call it the Middle East, given it`s West of both India and Pakistan?)
Farzana emphasises the Palestinian struggle is not a jihad and never was, but that hasn`t stopped valiant Pakistanis from fighting the good fight. Arafat is hardly a fundamentalist. I don`t think he`s always done the right thing, but I do see him as someone less bad than Sharon. It has always seemed to me that the Palestinians have paid the price for the Holocaust-the West doesn`t need to feel guilty any more, having helped to set up and maintain the state of Israel. I must admit it`s easy to feel sorry for them, since they never meddle in India and rarely if ever use the K word.
Sharon is no saint but we would have hosted both Stalin and Mao in the 50s if they`d have come, wouldn`t we? Israel hasn`t hurt India. Like a lot of others, I think it`s good to see our leaders looking after our interests instead of posturing...I have blurry childhood memories of Mrs G pontificating, and all for what purpose?
Having said that, the region really is a battleground between underdogs. It`s easy to understand why Jews are so paranoid when there are so many people who they have presumably never harmed, like temporal, urstruly and dionysus (the great Greek`s spirit suffers in silence somewhere...) sound as if they would like to throw the lot of them into the Mediterranean Sea. With due respect to Dr el Sheikh, he can`t prove that Jews are not descended from the Israelites,so how is it that you seem to believe him, Farzana? The fundamentalists on both sides sound as if they don`t believe the others are human, which is why they can go on at each other till kingdom come. Literally.
I notice no one here talks about the concept of 2 states. I guess the problem with that concept is that if you`re both people of the Book, you think yours is the only way-compromise is difficult.
The idea of US, Israel and India being bound in some way against terrorism (I`m sorry-what do you call Hamas,if not terrorists?) does make sense after hearing bin Laden`s latest-what`s that bit about Hindu soldiers then? The Bali bombers claimed the bombs were partly revenge for the violence in Gujarat-for those who don`t know,Bali is predominantly Hindu. I didn`t see any mention of this in Indian newspapers. Hindus do not have a sense of ummah,so those who did hear about it were probably gobsmacked. What I`m getting at is that when we don`t think of forging an alliance against Islam with fellow Hindus, why would we with people whose religion shares so much with Islam?(BTW, I continue to shock ordinary Aussies into silence when I tell them Islam has much more in common with Christianity than it does with Hinduism, so they can`t expect me to share the guilt for all the naatak that goes on in the name of Islam-if anything, they can carry it!!)
Please don`t bring the Israel/Palestine struggle down to the India/Pakistan thing . Kuch to chhod do...there are things in the world that aren`t all about us,strange though it may seem.
In the meantime......
I notice Tipu is back, this time as Navida, but with no change in logic or lack of thereof.
SR, getting admission to an Indian engineering college, especially the ones mentioned, is very very hard unless the ward is very hardworking and bright. If the sponsor(good man) is willing to spend that much,he could get a reasonable capitation college-given of course, the ward is able to pass the admission tests(since engineering costs much less than medicine, haha). Something he could consider is that there are often seats set aside for students from SAARC (remember that?) nations-at least there used to be in my days at med school, but as with everything else in our part of the world, his ward will need contacts and/ or cash to access these. I think Farzana`s spot on,what`s wrong with a polytechnic? It does mean you won`t get the very best jobs but if this is a child from an underprivileged background,it`s a good step into the middle classes and a great stepping stone to your own business, which could mean big bucks...

re:#180 by dionysus
I would normally have posted a number of articles in favor of my arguments but it is difficult to convince people like you and i do not really care. You are just one nutty case out there, perhaps one of many. I do not intend to waste my time on you.
But look up the defintions of a ``nation state`` versus ``nation`` and ``country``. Let me help you out a little more here. Was Israel a ``nation state`` before 1947? No it was`nt. Was it a ``nation``? You bet, it was. ``Nation`` refers to people. ``Nation state`` refers to a geographical area. Now go back to history of India from Indus Valley Civilisation onwards and see what i mean. Does that history book (not the one written by Pak historians!!) have India written all over it even before the name ``India`` became popular during the British rule? (Prior to that it was called variously as ``Aryavartha``, ``Bharat``, ``Hindustan``). What does it mean? Looks like i am preaching to a second grade student!
A lot of us can easily argue today that Pakistan is neither a ``nation`` nor a ``nation state`` as it was conceived. After all, when Pakistan was conceived as a nationstate (a geographical area that was home to Indian muslims), it had 2 wings, East and West and after the East wing became Bangladesh (with a larger population and a just claim on the title ``Pakistan) you continue to call the west wing as Pakistan. What will happen if Baluchistan secedes? You will perhaps still call the remaining part as Pakistan? So, instead of being a true ``nation state``,Pakistan has just become symbolic of an idea which keeps the powerful coterie (Army, landlords, mullahs) in power. The original idea (home to Indian muslims) is not valid anymore as there are thousands of Mohajirs in Bangladesh watiting to come to Pak for more than 20 years and have been unable to do so. Pakistan also does not allow any new immigraton from India. Pakistan has just become a convenient excuse for these powerfuls elements (Army, Landlords, mullahs) to share and enjoy power. No wonder few in Pak take democracy seriously.

SR (#178):
You might like to visit the IIT site at http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in...this is the Kharagpur branch. It has pretty detailed information, and you could contact them directly. It goes without saying that advanced education in India is far superior to that in Nepal.

Is it only engineering that the person would be interested in? And is it only at the very top level? For, there are many vocational institutes and polytechnics that offer such studies and even arrange for career outlets.

I know this is not of great help, but I will ask around for these should you be interested.

Dear Dost-Mittar,
That was a classic dost-mittar post: shifty, evasive, selective-with-the-facts and decietful in the extreme. You may have fooled the Najam Sethi fan club here on Chowk with your man-of-peace act, but you don`t fool me.

Give me honest fascists like stuka and harimau, any day!

stuka #149 ``Yeah, thanks for the lesson in ``Ideology of Pakistan`` , probably the only subject you scored an A in. ``

Not only are you a total fuckwit, you are also a presumptous idiot. What makes you think I believe in the `ideology of Pakistan`? Nothing is more repellant to me, except perhaps for the ideology of `India`. :)

``So, Ii guess we divided a fiction in 1971 as well? HAHA!! ``

Absolutely! What makes you think otherwise?

rsridahr #165 ``What are you on ? Some kind of dope? What you say or think or what your compatriots think or what is being taught in school in your benighted country (which, BTW, is neither a counrty nor a nation but a terrorist rat hole) matters. Don`t you guys get it? What you think just does not matter. It is what the world thinks.
India was not a nation ever! Some nerve you got. ``

Instead of stamping your feet and pulling out your own hair like a bad-tempered child, why don`t you present some counter-arguments? You do have some, don`t you? :)

engineering? The IITs are the best, next on the list comes the Birla Institute of Technological Sciences, Pilani and after that the Regional Engineering Colleges. Very very tough to get into any of them; only the most brilliant students can manage it. Don`t know much about the cost involved, sorry I can`t be more helpful; perhaps someone else can supply that information. They all conduct their separate entrance examinations every year.

To ALL Bharati vassi friends

First, please forgive this off-the-subject question, but this seemed like a good place to ask for helpful advice since everyone is flocking here.

I need some general information about ``advanced education`` in India compared to Nepal. I understand it costs Rs. 2.5 lakhs per year in Nepal to educate a young person in ``the best`` technical institute (engineering?) in Nepal. How would that stack up against similar (``the best``) education in India in terms of quality and expense? And where? A sponsorer of a Nepalese child (who is now a young adult) wishes to know.

Thanks for any info.

You may post infor here or directly by email: ``sohailrabbani`` at yahoo dot com.

Farzana,
I agree with you on Arafat. But for him palestinians would have been dispersed and the zionists would be even more powerful and aggressive than they are now.
It`s a crying shame that Sharon got invited. Israel is as democratic as apartheid south africa was. Democracy is no virtue if the people casting the votes are racists as zionists are. Modi`s government was democratically elected too.
Now for some reality check. Israel is waging a war on palestinian civilians with active help from the US. Europe is in the way of total annihilation of the palestinians. When they too give in, Palestinians will be history.

[Has anyone called Arafat, Saddam, Osama ‘prophets’? They have been deified, yes…their pictures are carried around and pasted on walls…they become poster boys. Not prophets. ]

I was refering to a more historic thug circa 7th century AD. His tactics weren`t to different from Mr. Sharon`s. No insult intended, simply meant in a polarized society someone who is a thug to one is a hero to another.
