SR #89: ``Is it true that the record holders in suicide bombings are Palastinians? Or could the Tamils also make that claim? Hope someone has the facts and figuers handy because I don`t feel like digging them out. Just curious...``
SR, I will provide you with this fact, if you agree to provide some more info like the one you provided about who owns the Fed.
By far, the highest no. of suicide bombings have been by the Tamil Tigers. There is no other organization that even comes close. In fact, the Tamil Tigers have carried out many times more suicide bombings than the rest of the organizations in the world combined.
“The Tamil Tigers are notorious for their suicide attacks, and the LTTE has carried out at least five times more such attacks than other similar organisations put together.” (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/526407.stm)
I believe the Tamil Tigers are predominantly Hindu.
“Some 80 percent of the Sri Lankan Tamils and 90 percent of the Indian Tamils are Hindus. They have little contact with Buddhism, and they worship the Hindu pantheon of gods.” (http://www.1upinfo.com/country-guide-study/sri-lanka/sri-lanka61.html)
They are related to India, through two means a) they were initially supported by Indian govt. b) and I believe continue to be supported financially by some Indian Tamils.
“Different Indian administrations have been responsible for training and arming the Tamil rebels in the past in different parts of the sub-continent…..With the expansion of the international wing of the LTTE, which operates from London and Paris,” (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/526407.stm)
I am not saying this to offend our Indian colleagues, but just to clarify some facts, and point out how international propoganda can completely influence people’s views, on who is doing what. Indian Hindus pointing to Muslims as suicide bombers thus becomes an ironic statement, since India and Hindus are the most closely associated with the biggest suicide bombing organization in the world.
In my personal view, violence and freedom and terrorism has no religion. It is not a religious problem, but a political problem.
On another note, there is one point I disagree with you on, somewhat. Some fraction of suicide is involved in every military action. People holding the fort till the end know they will die. Many of the WW I trench attacks were almost suicidal. Hence, a more important criteria against which attacks should be measured is whom they are targeting and the cause behind them. Attacks against civilians are terrorism; doesn’t matter if they are suicidal or not. And attacks against an occupying force’s military are a freedom fight; doesn’t matter if they are suicidal or not.

Farzana:
You and I have a disagreement on the purpose of foreign policy.
``Do you think Indians ought not to have an opinion regarding sending troops to Iraq?``
Indians can have whatever opinion they want, but the Republic of India should not concern itself with what it cannot influence regardless, especially if there is no strategic consequence to it. Otherwise, all we would do is continue the complete irrelevance we enjoyed during Nehruvian times.
Look at India`s history in foreign policy terms. We were a nation of Bhikaris, begging bowl in one hand, the staff of moral supremacy in the other, utterly convinced of our greatness and reduced to complete irrelevence by the rest of the world. This was India in Nehru`s time. Criticizing America on one day, begging for wheat the other. Talking big about democracy but keeping shut when Soviet tanks crushed Poles, Hungarians and Afghans because we were dependent on them for defense. Our entire ``moral`` foreign policy was a farce simply because we did not have the strength to back it up.
Post Nehru/Indira Gandhi, at least slowly, we are beginning to realize the futility of moral lectures if not backed by money and guns, in that order.
So fine, show concern for others...as long as it does not come in the way of accruing benefits. If Iindia criticizes Zimbabwe`s Mugabe, hey..go for it..Ain`t got nothing to lose. But in case of Israel, we do have benefits to accrue, or opportunities we can lose, depending on our foreign policy.
You have to understand though..I am not saying that your opinion as a private citizen is invalid, I am saying the state should have a higher consideration in mind.

romair: It is not others but the Palestenians (some of them) who have given a religious twist to suicide bombings. For example, Fatah does suicide bombings as well, but does not talk about the bomber going to heaven for Jihad. However, Islamic Jihad and Hamas do.
Suicide bombings were done by the Japanese as well, in the form of Kamikazes. But the Palestenian organizations are the first to give a religious twist to their suicide bombings, thereby making others think of Islam as a religion of violence / or at least one that condones suicide bombings.
Naqshbandi: You wanna know something funny? Your post...is the exact reason fundamentalist christian groups in America support Israel. They believe that for the Anti Christ / One Eyed Dajjal to appear, all Jews must be present in the holy land. They support Iisrael unconditionally becuase they believe it is a prequisite for the death of all the Jews and the end of the world. So, go figure..

Alephnull:
``Is he really a symbol of hatred for all Muslims?``
Actually, he is hated by all protagonists of human rights, but more so by Muslims since they are the primary victims of his vicious acts.
As for whether ``loudmouths`` represent the Muslim majority on this issue, does one have to conduct a poll to find out? Have you seen any Muslim leader of India, of any political stripe, who has come out in support of this controversial visit?
Romair:
In sheer viciousness, Tamil suiciders take the cake [there goes the stereotype of the coward Hindu and Madrasi!].
It would be acceptable to compare the Palestinian suicide bombers to the Tamil tigers, but not to the WTC or any other Umma type suiciders. Like Palestine, Tamil cause is ethnic-linguistic (tamil versus singhalese) and not religious. There is no religious issue between the tamil hindus and Sri Lankan buddhists. Some of the most vociferous spokespersons of both the Tigers and the Palestinians are christian tamils and christian arabs respectively.
But there is a significant difference. Unlike jihadis, no tamil suidide bomber evoked the name of religion to justify their act. The woman who killed Rajiv did not do so because he was a parsi/hindu/christian (nobody knows for sure!) but because he sent Indian troops against them.
And Romair was economical with truth about the Indian support of the tigers. The support, condemnable though covert and short-lived, was limited to Tamil Nadu with strong cultural, linguistic and historic bonds. Religion had absolutely nothing to do with it, as Hindus in general were totally indifferent to it. And no Hindu protested when Rajiv sent his army to train their guns on the Hindu Tigers.

`` Indian Hindus pointing to Muslims as suicide bombers thus becomes an ironic statement, since India and Hindus are the most closely associated with the biggest suicide bombing organization in the world. ``
Hmmm..... I am breaking my head to recall when Tamils used their holy books to justify or explain any of the suicide bombings they have done. It just doesn`t come to my memory when Tamils sweared by their holy books to commit suicide bombings thus linking their religion to their actions. May be my memory is limited but may be you remember better... please let us know.
By the way, wasn`t it during the Rajiv Gandhi administration that Indians carried out peace keeping operations in Srilanka and lost couple of thousands of troops fighting the LTTE ?
Sure, doesn`t history, according to Mullah Romair logic, tell us how India and holy hindu scriptures are linked to LTTE suicide bombings.
I just want to say onething.... Only stupid people justify their worse actions by pointing to someone else who is worst.

The Palestine issue has very little to do with religion. It is simply a territorial issue with immigrants forcing local inhabitatnts out.

By the way do people remember that it were troops led by a Paksitani Brigadier who were responsible for the killing of many Palestinians in Jordan.

Not all Palestenian suicide bombaers. Al Fatah is secular, Hamas is not. Also, the Fatah people are open to negotiations. What one forgets is that Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel and throwing every Jew in to the sea. What can you negotiate with them?

``How about the Sindhis in India? Do they have a place they can call home? Can they visit the land of their forefathers?
While you are shedding copious tears for the Palestinians -- whom you had not mett till late in your life -- you seem to have no sympathy for the Sindhis in your backyard in Bombay.
But then the Sindhis were expelled by Islamist thugs so it is all right! Only Muslims have a monopoly on suffering. ``
You tend to forget that Sindh was probably the only province in India and Pakistan where migration was not forced and the Sindhi Hindus who choose to leave did so of their own will. There was almost no rioting against Hindus and the few incidents that did take place were caused by the migrants from India and were quickly quelled.

The last time I checked, there are millions of Mohajirs who are proud that they went to the new promised land for which they had fought. These Mohajirs are no different from the jews of Europe and the U.S who went to their promised land. Almost all the hindus and sikhs and mainly Panjabi Muslims are like the Palestinians (and the jews from Arab countries) who were kicked out of their homes. ``
I tend to agree with your read of the paralell between the two nations.

P.S.
In addition to non-bhangis, I should have also added hindu haris who are also under no pressure to leave or convert as long as they keep supplying their daughters and sisters to their vaderas on demand.
Now this one is uncalled for and is factually incorrect.

Let us talk about what is happening today and not what happened in the past.
Indian Tamils do not support LTTE anymore. There may be some stray cases of individual support or some political support by some local parties in Tamil Nadu but by and large there is no sympathy for the LTTE cause. This is especially so after Rajiv Gandhi`s brutal assasination by the LTTE cadre. Tamilians were terribly upset, embarassed and sad at that brutal act since it happened right inside Tamil Nadu where Rajiv Gandhi had come on a compaign trail. I was there at that time and i know how everybody felt.
Palestenian suicide bombers may be latecomers to this idea of suicide bombing but they are not being criticised by the muslim ummah, who eulogise them as martyrs and ``shaheeds``. I saw a TV program in one of the US channels where these people (mostly from Hamas cadre) are treated as martyrs with their photos pasted and splashed all over the city and TV channels give great prominence to their act of terror. such acts have enocouraged more young men to do the same in the name of God. It is a tragic site to see young lives wither away in a merciless way.
This was never the case with Tamils. No Tamil outside of Srilanka has supported or encouraged suicide attacks by Tamil militants. They did receive financial support from Tamils (mostly from Germany, USA) but their financial support has dried up fast after LTTE was branded a terrorist organization by the USA. NObody in India shed any tears when that happened.
