It is my experience that when I have discussions about India and Pakistan with my Pakistani friends, they are quite forthright in decrying the ills afflicting their society. And I feel relaxed in admitting the stains on India from communal pogroms to corruption in India. Admittedly this is only a small proportion of overseas Pakistanis, educated and fairly liberal, and they are relaxed because they know I am not a Hindutvadi who will gloat over their weaknesses like military rule and so on. And similarly, many Indians will admit privately the frightening nature of the rising majoritarianism and the path that India has taken in recent years. Maybe not all, but quite a few. So I am just speaking from my own experience which is obviously different from yours. But on a public forum like this, washing the dirty linen in public leads to defensiveness, which is natural when there are insincere people waiting to pounce from both sides of the border.

~I worry about Farzana`s safety and well being. If she can`t be silenced by ridicule and invective, these Hindutva thugs may go to other extremes~

~india`s salvation rests upon all indians, of which farzana is one~

~India is not a mono this or a vibrant that. Its a huge sewer with a billion pieces of turd floating around, stinking the whole neighborhood~
....................................................................................................................
Farzana, isnt ali_1 so sweet? He cares so much for the welfare of faecal matter like you, just another turd floating about in pagan excrement.
Nooralain, please take note of your compatriot.
I am out of here I wish I didnt get involved in discussion like this.

okay. . .everybody back to their respective corners. . .remove those stinking boxing gloves. . .nobody wins here. cease and desist your punches and talk sense. . .now that would be a first at chowk, it really would. i should be penalized for having said that.
i now propose that we turn this into a ethnoreligious bashing free site. any takers? perhaps we may be able to extend this to the rest of chowk within this millenium?
also, just to point out to the unaware. . .to put questions such as why do Indian Hindus hate Farzana, or Pakistanis are more likely to blah blah blah does involve sweeping generalizations, and if you never learned this while you were in school, or just growing up, then don`t you think it`s time you learned? this is your shining moment to be just a little less ignorant, and have a little wider worldview, if only you wish upon your stars. don`t miss out on this great opportunity now. . .there`s nothing to be afraid of. your world will still be there. really, it will. it will just be better.
and since i`m dangerously close to be pollyannish. . .ciao.

I thought that after reading my The Infidel and India and Pakistan: The Stark Reality you knew me better...apparently not...but again, I’m not the most understood guy (perhaps deliberately) at Chowk either...not that I care...one can paint me any way one wishes...I know who and what I am, and that’s what matters to me.
Hope you accept my apology for the harsh sarcasm.

There are so many brilliant Muslim Female writers in India. Pakis probably get an impression that Farzana is the only one with maverick attitude with all chips on her shoulder. Albeit I must admit Farzana is very good writer. BTW next time should we expect from those young Pakis why do they ``love`` FV?

I count you among the nasty hindutva thugs..... and that alone makes me worry about Farzana`s safety.
However I admire your candidness... for example, you supported the genocide of gujurati muslims and voted for the perpetrators.... you are a snake but at least you are out in the open. Its the pmishra2 types that are sickening..... exceedingly venomous snakes who hide their hatred and bigorty in sophisticated English prose.

Please refer to godots post to gauge when and where religion was brought into play in this discussion.
And refer to stukas post number 23 for a full explication of what I meant when I talked about the settlement of Pakistan. Pakistan has the luxury of seeing everything in terms of one religion. If Indians do the same about their country there are 200 million non-Hindu Indians left out of the equation. It is easy to criticise when you dont have to worry about creating and maintaining an equitable society amidst bigotry, backwardness and crude majoritarianism under the rubric of democracy.

.......... reminds me of a song :
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause my fifteen year-old cousin has less acne
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Ain`t brushed them teeth since 1983
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause you got the grooming habits of a chimpanzee
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause you`re white but you got a nose like Bill Cosby
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause ya wore velour flares until the late Eighties
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause you run like a girl and sit down to pee
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause your only school chum was the lunch lady
But why`s everbody always pickin` on me?
Cause no one likes you monkey boy.

my sincere apologies for not reading you correctly!
…you say in # 25: …I don’t categorize ALL Hindus as Muslim haters (to make a sweeping generalization like that would be so unlike me--
…my unconditional apologies again: i should have inserted not all in the underlined quotes from#11:
Why do Indian Hindus Hate Farzana
Simple. She’s a Muslim. Never mind that she is an Indian. She is trying to make India, her country she loves so much, to an enlightened country; she wants to pull India out of the muck and give it a bath. But being a Muslim, she is considered a traitor for that attempt by the Indian Hindus.
…that i did not do so will mark me till dooms day…will you forgive me?…until you do i will not be able face myself here not to mention the hereafter...

Ugh, I see fanatics like ali_1 are now giving vent to their indo-phobic racist rantings. The only thing left out is complaining about indians stinky curry smell and ``1 muslim = 10 hindus`` kind of hate-speech.
I am sorry to see that a discussion of Farzana`s writings besmirched by the ravings of this hatemonger.

I think PZ (#17) has pretty much summed up the dynamics of interaction invovling Farzana Versey.
Harish, yours is a thoughtful, insigthful and above all, senstive, analysis-- but not without its questionable points. Or at least one point. Farzana may be supremely authentic, but the same can be said of Asif Naqsh. What`s the big deal with authenticity, especially on a site(s) where, whether intented or not, that authenticity is bound to translate into hits.
Of course, I don`t by this to discredit Farzana; just the general point about authenticity. I like Farzana for another trait of hers you mention: her apparent sensitivity. It is another matter that others seem to read otehr agendas into that sensitivity. In my own microcosm, her writings often inspire, or jolt, me into thinking of a better world.
That, and the fact that she`s got a flair with the pen I could kill for. :-)

HN,
re. ```I would bet that Pakistanis are much more progressive and admitting of their faults when they feel they are not being judged by ``the other``, ie: in private amongst themselves, rather than through a public forum like this.` ``
I earlier read that as `` ... Pakistanis are as progressive and admitting of their faults...`` Reason? I guess I just never expected ANYONE to say what you acutally said. Yeah, I second nooralain in suggesting you don`t put too much money on it. :)
