temporal/godot: beg to differ. examine the facts carefully and you will see (a) that the reason pakistan was kicked out of the commonwealth was as a form of protest against the military takeover of pakistan - in other words, in support of the cause of democracy in pakistan. in other words, for the same reason that pakistanis rant against the military on chowk and elsewhere. (b) the UK would, if it could, have invited pakistan back in. It was the African governments that didnt want pakistan in since it didnt want only an african country, zimbabwe, to have been kicked out.

also, lets not ahve any misplaced sympathies for mugabe - his kind of rulers have already been tried in africa for decades, and are by now thoroughly discredited among the ordinary africans.

any fool can walk out of a consultative body like the commonwealth. it takes a mature man to engage in dialogue.

Kerala seeks ten yr visa extension for Pak citizens
THRIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a humanitarian gesture, the Kerala government urged the centre to give a further ten-year extension of the visa validity to `Pakistan citizens` settled in the northern parts of the state who are above the age of 60 years.

However, in the case of Pakistan passport holders below the age of 60, numbering 12 out of the total population of 255, the state government sought a three-months` time to finalise the formalities for giving them Indian citizenship.

Briefing newspersons here after a meeting of the state cabinet, chief minister A K Antony said the central government should also consider setting up of a centre here to complete the formalities as majority of them were above the age of 70 and could not travel up to Delhi.

He said the state cabinet took such a decision on the basis of the recommendations of a recent meeting of the Members of Parliament from Kerala. ``They are living in a pathetic condition. We cannot call them as Pakistan citizens. Most of them are born in Kerala only, but at one stage they left for Pakistan and got the passport from there. Now, they are back in Kerala and want to live here, `` he said, urging the centre to stop all the measures for their deportation till the issue was settled.

The police and the district authorities had prepared a list of the Pakistan passport holders and it would be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry to prevent their deportation.

OIC is a toothless body BUT it at least is supposed to represent the common will of the Islamic Nations and therefore Pakistan should stay in it--indeed try to make it a powerful body not just one which `passes resolutions`. Humein Madinay ki ghulami qabool hai Commonwealth ki nahin :-)

Main kahoon ke main ghulam hoon Aap ka (Ya Rasool Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam)
Aur woh kehein ke haan humein qabool hai!

Ameen.

This is from the horse’s mouth itself... From The Economist

What’s the Commonwealth for?

“[I]f the Commonwealth cannot even agree on the suspension of a country that has so egregiously departed from the club’s avowed aims of democracy and human rights, then what purpose does it serve?” ”avowed aims of democracy and human rights” Huh! What a farce!!!

“The Commonwealth is indeed an odd creature. It is largely...the remnants of Britain’s empire.”

“When the term “commonwealth” was first used, in the 1920s, it was a means of preserving ties without the unpleasant colonial overtones that the word “empire” contained.”

“Above all, the Commonwealth defines its purpose largely in civil-society terms: the promotion of democracy, human rights and sustainable economic and social development.” ”promotion of democracy, human rights” Huh! What a farce!!!

“In Britain, it seems to have a different significance for different people. Traditionalists like the link with the lost empire.”

“Others think that the Commonwealth is a modern interpretation of Rudyard Kipling’s view that the colonies were the “white man’s burden”—that the West, in short, has a responsibility to civilise the developing world.”

continuing to flirt with these Commoners....

#18 by veeresh,

Add some more. But....

I met atleast 200+ Pakistanees. Almost all of them were actually humane. What a surprise and a jolt. I am not. I am actually a Hindoo. A pagan. The only one who completely agrees with MAJ and TNT.

Get out of all the international treaties. Who asked you to join to start with. (Wrong question.... but, you never question true muslims) ....A pure land called Pakistan needs anything else EH?

I also do, completely agree with the author. Pakistan is what is proclaimed. Land of pure. Heavan on earth. Islam is only way to go. All others are well....I am only a confused one... Of course there is Ali 12345 to cure and ....

The problem Ali will never explain is why pagan and idoltery is still there...in Islam I mean. Ali SAAB can I build a house with TO-I-LET facing... well... May be ALI is soooo humble, he wants to be politically correct.

Educating mushy,

In the first speach of mushy after taking over pakistan, he declared that simla and lahore accords are not worth the paper written on because the kashmir issue is not solved. He said he has a solution. After india acquired better weapons, the APHC has been split, and has armed herself to teeth, mushy is offering peace talks, he wants ``composit dialogue``. Little does he know that the central piece of the lahore declaration is the composite dialogue, which means that all issues including kashmir will be discussed simultaneously, and solved one by one.

Through the kargill invasion, the highest causality in all of the indo-pak wars, the man has returned pakistan to the 1999 position of lahore decleration. In the mean time india has become a major military power, the fencing has gone ahead. While india has gained strength, pakistan has been weakened.

This tragedy is simply due to the failure of the pak elites, the pak foreign affairs experts and the pak journalists. What they are declaring as a great peace initiative is nothing, it is back to 1999, and pakistan has to give up so much. No pak writer, no tahmed will dare to accept this

What have you been smoking dude?
If you can`t stomach the fact that India is a successful democracy (the world acknowledges it as such so what you say does not matter), then you can do what rest of Pakis do everyday: whine.
Whine, Whine, whine. While you do that, India continues to forge ahead in all areas.

Rigging! Dude, rigging will happen when there are so many vested interests competing. But India has an autonomous Election Commission which conducts elections and can re-order ballot counting or election itself if it finds out that any rigging has happened. Did you know that the present Election Commissioner Lyndoh has received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award for conducting fair elections in Kashmir and Gujarat?
Wake up guys or else you will all be history.
