like cool i mean am i the first one to read this entire line of words spilled in reams and reams of cricketing facts or did somebody else read all this too? i dont know what the neighbouring side of my country (india) thinks but i think max indians do take indo pak matches as a time to be cheery enough to forget our other more demeaning woes of life(what am i saying), anyways all in the article was fine till i stumbled upon this partcular line
``Modern Indian Test sides tend to have no more than one or two Muslim players at a time, but prior to 1947 the Indian team usually included four Muslim players. ``. DUDE seriously what makes u think that we indians are really bothered about the composition of the so called INDIAN TEAM. i mean ya i ( a sikh) should be actually be bothered as to how many hindu, muslim, sikh or christian players should be there. Its a performance game sir, and we indians are finicky when it comes to performance of our cricket team, we are the kind who would sacrifice our own children for the performance of the team(eg. sunil gavaskar`s son rohan gavaskar). this country is a team and not only the games we play.

++++Careful there pilgrim you wouldn’t want to get onto a cricket match with me. ;)
(anytime :-), i`m in canada kinda cold here, so would have to be indoors, b.t.w we do have local cricket team and indians and pakistanis both form the backbone and i must say one srilankan and a south-african)
++Anyways, Germany versus England in football, in 1966 the English supporters chanted `two world wars and a world cup`. Argentina versus England in football is always good and fierce.( do not bring the falklands into this, besides english fans are known for their hooliganism and i wonder how many argentinians play in the premeirship?)
Iran vs America back in the late 90`s was a cracker too. This is good popcorn. Great entertainment.(bad example again, a regime for which victory over the us was the ultimate dream, be it war, be it sports, no fun, too much pressure, if u fail come back home and be executed :-))
Violence off the pitch for the sake of sport is a bit off. Pub brawls and stone throwing, I concede is bad.(agree with u on that one)
Lets hold on to sportsman spirit. But apart from that it`s war.(why contradict yourself)
And it should be. Pakistan will win. Long live Pakistan! (who wins or loses only time will tell:-))
cheers

aminashah #98 ``I have heard eating meat is making many women to have Mostooch ( sign of Mard) like men and men get too much hair on ears of Punjabi men like pigs. ``
That is true. In addition, if you eat horse meat, you develop powerful thigh muscles and can run at 50 mph while hitting do-lattis. Eat the heart of a lion, and you will become so brave they will have to hold you back from running into the highway daring trucks to hit you. Fried goat meat will have you saying ``ba-a-a-a`` in between sentences. Try monkey meat, and you will become a world champion trapeze artiste.
And orang-utang meat will make you grow orange colored hair all over your body. Eat donkey meat, and you will grow a tail. You must try all this sometime. People will think you have just returned from a beauty parlor.

About meat eating different people have different attitudes.
Meat eating for woman is not good. I have heard eating meat is making many women to have Mostooch ( sign of Mard) like men and men get too much hair on ears of Punjabi men like pigs.
Let us hope India does not cancell their tour of cricket. As shias are slaughterd only because they are shias by religious fanatics and they have not provoked , means there is no law and order. I f Indians cancell at this time hardly we pPakistanis can blame them to cancell due to law and order . Let us hope they do not as its not just game but it will be financial blow to cricket Board. And this can give chance to other teams to avoid thier defeats by saying they can not tour due to security of players. Hope Indian Primeminister will pressure so show goes on.

ironman #93 Yours is a truly tragic story.
Fortunately you have never travelled in a bus in the frontier province in Pakistan - being a martial race, the pathans fire spit like bullets inside the bus. So you need to dodge the flying spit the way you would take evasive action against incoming bullets (or missiles, given that the spit comes in different sizes). And of course, the taller you are, the harder it gets to avoid getting hit. So, once again, the advantage goes to short people. Hell, if you are 3 foot tall (like hrrehman or jay), you dont need to duck at all!!
NB: The above is a blatant exaggeration of course, based on a real life story relayed by a fellow in college.

I dont know why you guys think Gult/Gulty is perceived to be an insult by Andhraites. This would have started in National institutes where each region get it`s nick name (mostly funny bordering on insulting).
Gult has the same relevance to Andhraities as some other nick names (ghatis, bangus) are percieved by the respective states. No special grievance against Tams there
This is not to say that Gults are not pissed off by Tams. They are, but for different reasons:
1) Appropriating Thyaga Raja and other Carnatic music personalities
2) Taking Chennai away from them
;-)))

Dr Sridhar,
``Meat is a good source of protein. One can get good protein from any Soy source (eg Soya Beans). Some Dals (like Bengal Gram) are good in protein. Though a vegetarian, i take egg, a good source of protein. ``
Can you also say something about the animal hormones, or is that a myth too? If you dont know, say so, or say that you dont agree. Dont discard it as a myth generalizing with other putative (sorry Alleph Null) myths. Also, dals and soy etc are ok protein for jobs such as typing posts, but the amount of gas is of mythical proportions, hence not good for competatice atheletics.
Anyways, I am pestering you because I seem to recall that you had some time back talked about how TamBram diet being conducive for peacful and intellectual pusuits..so this is just the flip side. So yours are empirical observations whereas mine are myths? Please explain.

rsridhar #91 I used to go to kenya on business at one time. it was not uncommon to see school kids participating in long distance races across the city streets.
As a vegetarian, you would not be too pleased with kenyan food - a favorite dish seems to be a pile of almost raw meat slices on a plate with plenty of seasoning. The guests all dip into the same dish. As a visitor in the kenyan boondocks (where they assume everyone thinks meat is the greater invention since sliced bread), i got stuck with having to eat some of the stuff once (i didnt want to insult them by refusing their national dish) and for the next one year couldnt stand the sight of meat. Similarly, outside nairobi there is a restaurant that specializes in feeding goras all kinds of wild animal meat (zebra, alligator, snake, ostrich, you ask for it they got it) - with no vegetables in sight. So maybe all that high protein diet does help them build up leg muscle. (Incidentally, the finest indian restaurant i have ever been to is also in kenya).

tahmed32 #68,
``...I am all for short people...``
Me too. Most of my best friends were shortish. If you had the time I could tell you the travails of being tall in india. I lost count of the number of times I banged my head on various door frames, and the number of cobwebs I cleared! About how I would treasure the one blue suede shoe (size 13) i managed to find...and how, if not for good old hawai chappals, I would have to walk barefoot!
Worst of all...the absolute worst of all...is having your shirt used as a towel.
Picture this...I enter a DTC bus (delhi trans. corp); manage to wedge my head between the two hand rails...which by some cosmic luck just fits my skull. With the crowd in front and back...I am now more or less immobile. Its dead heat of summer and people are sweating buckets. The guy behind me gently lays the side of his head on my back. A gentle sweep of the head and he`s wiped clean...sweat free...and then the other side...!
:(

Thanks for telling me Egg has cholesterol!
I was only trying to say that vegetarianism is of many kinds and not all vegetarians are vegans (who only eat vegetables and nothing else).
Your eg of Kenya is a good one. Kenyans are, however, good at long distance running only. That again may be due to their acclimatisation to the high altitude and training for running for long hours. I saw a program in T.V where they showed how Kenyan school children literally ran to their school with a bagpack, climbing some times steep climbs. The training is there from childhood!

rsridhar #88 You realize that egg comes with cholestrol in the yolk, so one should probably limit cholestrol (unless it is already low, e.g. under 110 or so for LDL cholestrol). Egg omellette without yolk actually tastes quite good, and you can add seasoning to it.
As for myths, the following example is instructive i think: kenyans are world class marathon runners. One reason is environmental (nairobi is 6000 ft or so above sea level, and the rarified air builds up their lung capacity; another is life-style related (they are often herdsmen like the masai, and thus get used to an active lifestyle chasing their herds of cattle around); and another is genetic (like many blacks, they tend to have longer legs relative to torso as compared to whites e.g.).
I am pretty sure i am accurate above, and it just tells us how flimsy any stereotypes are about variations within the human species.

Gulty is telugu pronounced backwards. Used by tamils to refer to telugus in a pejorative manner. I don`t know why it`s pejorative, but it is.

Thanks for your post.
Subcontinent abounds in myths and perceptions. That muslims were better sportsmen while hindus were better at academics is one. Such differences were carefully fostered by the British to create divisions.
I do not believe that non-vegetarians are better at pace bowling anymore than believing that hindus are better at academic skills. It is all about how one trains.
Meat is a good source of protein. One can get good protein from any Soy source (eg Soya Beans). Some Dals (like Bengal Gram) are good in protein. Though a vegetarian, i take egg, a good source of protein.
Anyway, food is only one part of the problem. If one is genetically endowed (like say some Pathans are) to be a fast bowler, and that person trains well and exercises well to build muscles, he has a good chance of becoming a fast bowler. It is Genes + Enviornment. It is a myth that only meat-eaters can become fast bowlers. I just think that fast bowlers from the subcontinent have traditionally come from the meat-eating areas. That is all. There is no cause and effect here.

Amit #77,
Why turn it into a kabaddi match ?
You mean Kabaddi is not a gentleman`s game? What kind of idiotic statement is that? Why should any game be treated different from any other?
Pakistanis and Indians have the same genes. So, there will be equal percentage of good looking and bad looking Indians. No point going down this road again. It`s childish.

amit #82 Certainly prejudice is part of it. But I think it also indicates that the very concept of civilized discussion is missing among many people: They say the smell of poverty takes 2 generations to go away from a family (and that is why we have the nouveau riche and their cheap habits). I think the same can be said of nations, and that is why we have so many lousy posters on chowk. And unfortunately, per Gresham`s Law, bad currency tends to drive out good. So, perhaps it is my imagination, but chowk discussions are beginning to sound more and more like a bunch of empty vessels making noise.

Thanks, tahmed. It is really sad to see educated Indians and Pakistanis always putting each other down at every opportunity. Some of the old chaps like jay, urstruly etc are irreversibly prejudiced. So it is futile to argue with them. Let`s hope that the next generation of desis can rise above this.

Re:Lord_Dirtier and his followers,
Let`s have a competitive game, by all means. But I don`t understand this ridiculous obsession with the war metaphor. Cricket is a gentleman`s game. Why turn it into a kabaddi match ? By continously focusing on the war analogy, we simply show our immaturity and backwardness to the rest of the world. Pakistan has a better record than India in cricket for the past 20 years. So what ? Your vast millions still go hungry to bed and your youth want to leave the country at the slightest opportunity. The ones staying behind are committing suicide at an alarming rate. India`s situation is not that great either, but it is relatively better off than Pakistan. If you want mindless rivalry with India, let`s do it in matters of which country/system is providing a better life to its citizens. At least our poor junta will benefit from the rivalry. On the other hand, if we can display some modicum of civilization (we claim millenia old civilization on both sides), we should finally be able to look beyond our differences and think of cooperating and helping each other out.
At the end of the day, India is one of the few countries in the world where Pakistanis are treated with love and respect. You can compare that to the rest of the Islamic world or the west, where Pakistanis are treated with disrespect and looked down upon. It is your misfortune to continously shun us or put us down.
As far as people comparing physical characteristics of the two, that is simply laughable. We are debating over marginal differences in complexion or height, which are not even discernable by the naked eye. Most rational Pakistanis and Indians who visit each other`s countries, can barely feel that they are visiting another country.

Well, you won`t be thanking God for long once Uncle Sam is thr` with you guys. Perhaps you have not travelled abroad. You would know what it is to be a Paki then.
Anyway, the operative words in the above sentence of yours is `` late 90s``. A lot of things have been changing rapidly, so much so that some parts of Delhi where i used to live in the 80s is unrecognizable today.
Comparison with Pak is useless. Pak is a terrorist infested country with people who have few skills left after the nation had invested heavily in Jehad.
If Pak had same talents, why do they not compete with India in IT, BPO, nation-building.
AS one Indian said to a Paki in the 90s (and i read it in a newspaper), `` We are both in trash. The difference is: Indians are looking up towards the stars while Pakis are content to look down into the trash``.
Sridhar
P.S: BTW, who allowed a rat like you to visit India? Indians are too liberal you know.
``I have been to India in the late 90`s and let me tell you
man, the ugliness is everywhere. Thank God I am a Pakistani.``
Well, you won`t be thanking God for long once Uncle Sam is thr` with you guys. Perhaps you have not travelled abroad. You would know what it is to be a Paki then.

Gawd.. every true bakra eater from India or Pakistan knows (or should know) sali boti..unless you are a Pure arab or a bhaji eater. Anyways, here is the recipe.
http://www.recipehound.com/Recipes/3458.html
Sridhar, you are a doctor. Is anything I that I have written wrong? It has been proven that al the vegeterian Satwik food (without onions and garlic) is awful for fast bowling. A fast bowler needs all his back muscles, and cannot afford to devote some for sphincter control. Mutton provides all the necessary protein AND hormones which provides the specific chemical triggers for that edge, the killer instinct. Especially good are the specific organ meats khatkhat made from gurda etc. So Sridhar, please tell me if what I write is wrong, and how so, instead of giving tangetial statistical argument.

I don`t know in which hole have you been hiding bud!
but one thing is for certain you can`t compete with
the good looking pakistani jawans.
If you don`t believe me just ask any of your Indian girls.

ironman #68 you mean you never heard of Channa (a Pakistani)? He was the tallest man in the world (per Guiness) when he was around. I got a nephew at 6 foot 5 inch who calls his 6 foot 1 inch dad, my brother, ``shorty``. I am, alas, a mere 5 foot 9 inch but tough (or so I like to think) (and unlike that chirri-chested bollywood hero who thinks he is Arnold Schwazzengger and takes his shirt off at every chance).
Anyway, I am all for short people. (with the exception of that madrasi jay thakeray, who i am sure is 3 foot 5 inch tall and weighs 50 pounds and takes his frustrations out by cursing at us poor pakis on chowk).

``As for the pakis...I`m yet to see even a 6-footer paki in the US.``
``Are you serious, naaaa you can`t be.....``
Dead serious sir. In the last 7 years in the US, haven`t seen one 6-footer pakistani. In toronto during an interview there was a young pakistani sitting with me who was about 6-foot I guess. He seemed shocked to see an Indian towering over him. Kinda went quiet.

``Why don`t you ask your actresses who say ``now I know where all the good looking men
in South Asia live`` Come over to Pakistan to see how ugly you Indians really are.
The biggest insult to a Pakistani is when someone asks him if he is an ``Indian``.``
Now its my turn to ask...are you serious?
Fifty years ago your grandpappy was what...(gasp, choke..)...an Indian ?!!
C`mon Mr. rehman...most of the semi-decent looking pakis are panjabis/sindhis...and we have **60 million** of them. (You didn`t know that did you? 60 million is about half your population. Time to update your database!)

no country can outclass bharat matha, much less Pakistan...actually the only country that can outclass bharat matha aka drawidia is she herself...bharat matha outclasses herself time and time again in poverty in ugliness in moaning in breeding in farting in wailing...bharat matha is the all-time cheapest sl*ut... has always been conquered, ruled and raped by every tom, dick and harry... and her all time favourite master is dick of course.

khota pundit #62.
... i will make it simple for your comprehension.
1. jang is an indian making fun of your cricketers.
2. you took the hook, line and sinker and came back with a rebuttal to prove superiority of indian athletes compared to pakistani athletes and posted stats from asian and commonwealth games.
3. i proved that jang is indian and provided medals tally of cuba which is miniscule in size and population compared to both pakistan and india.
4.the final point is it is not the size that matters nor the accumulation of medals that make one superior or better.
...and finally a small question....do you have a small penis?

wahrheit,
perhaps you should ask those who have been insulted just how seriously it should be taken. such words have been used maliciously for years. . .it wasn`t just nations they insulted, it was people. i know that i would not want to be called a paki or if i was japanese to be called a jap. neither would my japanese friends. it`s all about respecting yourself and those around you. oh well. . .not much of that happens in chowk anyways, so what`s the point?

but the fact still remains that historically, paki was used as offensive british slang to insult pakistanis and indians and bangladeshis.
not quite true...the brits often use/used short forms to insult some nations...such as japs of japanese, germs of germans and pakis of pakistanis...but it should not be taken seriously...indians are normally insulted by calling a stinky drawidian niga`.... sad but true...

*caught in the crossfire of stones. . .aaaaaaaieeeee*
arjun,
i don`t doubt that they did that. if you google the word paki, you`ll see a whole lot of stuff on paki pride, paki pop, paki this and that. but the fact still remains that historically, paki was used as offensive british slang to insult pakistanis and indians and bangladeshis. the older generations in bradford or birmingham could probably tell you that as well. dunno if you saw `bend it like beckham` but jess gets called a `paki` by someone on the opposing side and she reacts violently and gets the red card.
there is such a phenomenon, sociological or psychological, that has to do with taking a racial slur, and making it your own badge of pride. . .like some african-americans have done with the N-word. it still doesn`t change the fact that it`s historically a slur and that it still hurts a lot of people to hear that. i don`t know if that`s the case here with the word paki, but anyway. . .i know you won`t stop using it. : )

LD,
we`ve had a discussion about this on chowk before. . .perhaps before your time.
the word `paki` was and still is used to denigrate indians, pakistanis, bangladeshis, in britain and possibly other commonwealth countries, but britain in particular. it is their way of calling us the N-word.
certain indians use it here to denigrate us as well. and certain pakistanis use it because they see nothing wrong in abbreviating it, plus they`re bloody lazy. but just you wait `enry `iggins just you wait! when a gora banda calls one of them a `paki` to their face. . .their now pakistani blood will boil. : )

++Competitive sports is a good thing.Winning is important.
(agree completely, winning is important too, agree there too, be agressive win, keeps up
the morale)
We are not brown `beggars` `fighting` over cricket with the rest of the world laughing at us, as a misguided, inferiority complex ridden person insinuated in an earlier post.
(unfortuantely the rest of the world is laughing at people like you who treat this as war, or an extension of that, for those enjoying the sport, winning does matter(i`m an indian supporter, of course i would love for india to win) if they do not the pakistani team was better, and india needs to improve. But that is to the extent that it should go, unfortunately educated(i assume you are) people such as yourself get lost too much in patriotic fervor that you fail to understand the basic principles underlying sport (any sport not just cricket).
Cheers

arjun_m, rsridhar,
``...athletic Pathans and other Pakis...``
For some reason...some untangible reason...most people think of afghans/pathans as `athletic`??
As a kid and teenager in delhi it was a common sight to see afghans peddling potions and edibles for `increased virility`. That always made me smile, because the peddler looked like he badly needed the stuff he was peddling!
I think it may have something to do with the afghan landscape. One gets the feeling that only a hardy soul could survive there. That may be true. But does handsomeness and hardiness translate to `athleticism`?
Only when a afghan is seen standing next to a US soldier do we have something to compare them with. Then we see a thin, malnourished, dirty little fellow.
- - - -
As for the pakis...I`m yet to see even a 6-footer paki in the US.
I think they have the `frightened cat` syndrome.
When a cat meets an aggresive dog, it raises itself as high as possible with fur sticking out...trying to make itself large...hoping to fool the dog that its larger than it is.
So, we have paki miliatry websites where they display the largest/fattest soldier they can find...hoping to convey that...lookie here...this is a `typical` paki soldier...or the Romair types who say all pakis are `italian` looking...and ghee-laden flesh is `well-built` !!!
Yup, we`re all fooled.

Cricket has more in comon with positive cross border initiatives like arts and cultural exhanges, travel and tourism and moreover trade. it is unlike jihadi militant garbage which also has political overtones. When people talk about cricket having political overtones, it has more to do with setting positive exchange mechanism, sportsmanship and common loves. It has nothinhg to do with Kashmir or dhaka or Siachen or jihadi and RSS vermin.
Hope India wins, if they lose... it is ok...because the ultimate victory is for the two people who are trying to move beyond siachen and kashmir and jihad...

This is my first post on this site. I have read through quite a few articles, sports, politics, etc.. . Cricket being the discussion and being ardent follower, would just like to post a few thoughts.
1. Millions follow the game in both countries, are passionate about the game, but politicians give it a twist( a religious one i must say, and the sportsmen from both countries comply(in the media)
2. Has anyone given thought to the fact that most in cricketing fraternity are friends and the hype is just something created by the media, backed up by politicians.
3. Also try not to get politics involved in sports, i know its inevitable but try to look beyond that....
**On a side note(the australians are successful because of professionalism, unfortunately our players even though they try cannot succed, because of too much politics involved)

Cricket diplomacy,
Once up on a time, there was ping pong diplomacy between US and china. This sending of the cricket team will not add anything. Pakistan is acollaborating country, right from its creation to the latest, where mushy has collaborated with the US and is killing its own people trained by the govt as jihadists.
US is wooing india to be part of the NATO to prevent the Russia, china-india alliance. India will not go for the nato bit and will tilt towards the r-c-a alliance.
That is the time for pakistan to fire up the jihadis again, this time once again with US support. Pakistan has no identity, no vision. Sorry, I am wrong, tahmed bin urstruly of faisalabad has a vision, to become an arab. Cricket never makes any heros, does not inspire anything in pakistan. ASk imran khan his hospital gets pittance from the pakistanis, while the lasjers are rolling on millions.

Pakis are better athletes! Let us do some reality check here.
Medal tallies in the last commonwealth games:
http://www.abc.net.au/commonwealthgames/medal_tally.htm
Australia 82 62 63
England 54 51 60
Canada 31 41 44
India 30 21 18
New Zealand 11 13 21
South Africa 9 20 17
Cameroon 9 1 2
Malaysia 7 9 18
Wales 6 13 12
Scotland 6 8 16
Nigeria 5 4 11
Kenya 4 8 4
Jamaica 4 6 7
Singapore 4 2 7
Bahamas 4 0 4
Nauru 2 5 8
Northern Ireland 2 2 1
Cyprus 2 1 1
Pakistan 1 3 3
India: Gold: 30 Silver: 21 Bronze: 18. Ranking: 4th
Paki : Gold: 1 Silver: 3 Bronze: 3. Ranking: 19th. It is behind Bahamas, Nauru (ever heard of Nauru!)
Now, onto the Asian Games in Boson, 2002:
PRC, Korea, Japan are top 3. How about India and Pak?
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/cna/asiangames/14tally.htm
India 11 12 13 36 (7th)
Pakistan 1 6 6 13 (22nd)
Move on to the Afro-Asian Games held in Hyderabad, India in 2003.
http://www.afroasiangames.org/medalstallycountry.html
India is ranked 2nd after China in medal tally:
China 25 11 5 41
India 19 32 29 80
How about Pak?
Here is the medal tally:
Pakistan 0 2 1 3
Don`t worry about the ranking. Pak is below Egypt, Seychelles and Senegal.
It is just pathetic.
Apparently, the athletic Pathans and other Pakis (traditionally believed to be better off physically) are not winning any medals for their country.
It is madrassa education which teaches that Pakis are better athletes. There are no statistical or scientific data proving it. Cricket is only one sport. Pak is pathetic in every other sporting endevours. Surely a strong Pathan can be a champion in areas requiring power play: eg Discus, Hammer throw etc. But i do not see that happening. Reason: The burly 6 foot Pathan is happy to jerk off and smoke pot when not creating trouble for others. Sports requires too much discipline and hard work.
Jang Mian, wake up and smell the coffee. You Pakis are good at nothing. I know it will take time to sink in. Meanwhile i will keep posting the irrefutable statistics.

There we go again....the PCB is begging -- I mean literally -- for India come play cricket in Pakistan because they will go broke if we don`t go there. Here is this Jihad-Junkie bragging that $20 million is puny.
Here is what you can do, arrange to transfer some of the Jihad money collected to the coffers of PCB each time a country refuses to tour Pakistan. That way everyone -- including the cannon fodder Jihadis -- will be happy. And the PCB can keep up the swagger. How is that?

Rumor has it that Indian politicians were pissed off at Pak`s observance of Kashmiri day. I read in a newsletter that this was a way of saying that in times of change, observing a Kashmiri day is a regressive step. ABV earned the good name by stepping in to save the trip but i believe it was all pre-planned!

It was just the economics of depriving PCB from making serious amounts of cash - playing India is the biggest money-spinner for any cricket board at this point.
+++
This may have been the tactical objective. But ofcourse there had to be a larger strategic objective, that would result in diplomatic gains for India. Depriving PCB of cash couldn`t have been the objective in itself. It doesn`t make sense for Advani & Dalmiya to pick a fight with Messrs Rameez Raja, Shahryar Khan and their PCB staff. And just over $20m!
Unless of course the (erroneous) assumption was that a loss of $20m would create ripples in every ministry and administrative block inside Pakistan. Given that Indian bureaucracy and politicians keep a tab on Pakistan`s economic packages, etc. it is unlikely that the cricket boycott was due to financial reasons. After all $20m is puny for Pakistan.
This leads me to believe that the real reason for threatening boycott was fear of losing to Pakistan, especially close to elections. This would have a blown a hole through BJP`s ``India Shining`` campaign. The ``bleed PCB`` reason was sold to the Indian public just for propaganda reasons, but saner minds in Delhi knew better.

Its all about mutton.
It is a well known fact that you must eat mutton to be able to bowl fast. Srinath was advised by Lee to do so..sambhar-rice just does not do it. That is why pakistani and Muslim cricketers are better atheletes. Try to imagine Prasanna as an athelete! Srinath was more of a software enggineering type who will say stuff like ``sure, the ball on long on boundary can be stopped`` rather than diving to stop it. Its the mutton that gives you the hormones and chemical triggers to get the extra ummph. Also, all the ruffage in bhaji is not very good for long hours of fielding. Dal is a good protein for a balanced diet, but it lacks the animal hormones, and the copious flatulence in mid-stride is not very good for producing the reverese swing. So its the mutton that makes Pakistanis better atheletes, Anjuman-e-Islam High School win the Giles/Harris Shield against King George High School, and Zaheer and Irfan fast bowlers. Indian team better start keeping a stable of bakras if they want to win.
Here is one proposed menu for the Indian team if they really want to win.
Breakfast: Kheema-Pau and Bakri Milk Tea
Lunch: Mutton Curry and Parantha and Bakri Lassi
Tea: Seekh Kabab (again with Bakri Milk Tea)
Dinner: Sali Boti, Awadhi Mutton Biryani with mint chutney, Coffee with Bakri Milk.

pashawar and multan will not disappoint anyone. they are two of the most culturally interesting places u will ever visit. hire and tanga and go to all the bazaars of peshawar, if u reach the city much b4 the match. experience the wholesale markets of the worlds best ammunition and the biggest collection of smuggled goods anywhere. top it all off with a pashto film. visit the shrines in multan. the women their are beautiful beyond belief. just walk into a local restuarant, try some of the local cuisine and try making conversation with an oldtimer who will be full of stories, historical facts and legends about the place. dont waste time at ur hotel.
and then if the matches are what they say they will be, it will be a more than worhtwhile experience

Chowk Staff: This is simply to thank you for implementing your guidelines in a case where the poster was repeatedly violating them.
I have no doubt that by making this a properly moderated website (like all good websites are), you will encourage more people to participate on chowk, and certainly these will be more intelligent people from both India and Pakistan.

HisExcellency #26,
I doubt that BCCI or the Indian bureaucracy had the illusion that not touring
Pakistan would change the ground realities in Kashmir. It was just the economics
of depriving PCB from making serious amounts of cash - playing India is the
biggest money-spinner for any cricket board at this point.
It also does seem to me that for India, Australia has replaced Pakistan as the
main adversary. The hype around this upcoming tour seems somewhat of a
media creation; the public reaction is more muted compared to a similar tour 10-12
years ago.

Yes, you are right. Depriving PCB of the revenues from cricket is a complete non-incentive.
+++
Apparently Vajpayee has driven some sense into BJP hardliners and the Indian bureaucracy. The PCB is just a sports association, not a policy maker in Pakistan. Refusal to tour Pakistan wouldn`t make a dent in Pakistan`s Kashmir policy, but it would jeopardize Pakistan`s return tour to India scheduled for next year. BCCI must therefore be careful in attaching strings (MoUs, objection to venues, etc) to the current tour. PCB could attach the same strings (objection to Mumbai & Ahmedabad as venues, insistence on Pakistani commandos providing security) next year.

I am taking bets on the series. If anyone is interested, please email:
- Test Series (all odds 2-1)
India 1-0 (if Harbajan and Kumble both play)
India/Pak 1-1 (If either Harbajan or Kumble play, but not both)
Pak 1-0 (If Harbajan and Kumble both do not play, and Shoaib plays all three)
- One-day series:
India 3-2 (regardless of who plays or does not play)
- Indian team gets assasinated while touring Pakistan (1-100)
- Indian politicians continue making political statements and keep putting their foot in their mouth at each step during the series (100-1)
- Indian film actresses in the crowd get far more attention from Pakistani fans, than Indian cricketers on the ground (5-1)
- Indian fans touring Pakistan are greatly disappointed by Multan and Peshawar (50-1)
- Javed Miandad makes five stupid remarks and one unbelievingly shrewd remark during the seires (2-1)
- Tendulkar gets a standing ovation somewhere along the line (2-1)
- Indian female fans fall in love with Shoaib and Afridi, after having to have lived with looking at Ganguly and Harbajan for so long (1000-1)
- Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan are offered jobs by the newly privatized Habib Bank and they decide to defect (101 - 1)
- Danish Kaneria becomes the most popular Hindu in Pakistan, after he clean bowls Dravid with a flipper, and screams Pakistan Zindabad (10,000 -1)
- Test Series (all odds 2-1)
India 1-0 (if Harbajan and Kumble both play)
India/Pak 1-1 (If either Harbajan or Kumble play, but not both)

``The most obvious is a pair of men called Shoaib and Sami, who can bowl at 150km-per-hour pretty much whenever they feel like it.``
True. That is the true hallmark of a chucker...the ability to suddenly increase speed at will.
Compare the wide variation in his bowling speeds with any other bowler and you`ll know. A 150 kmph does indeed come out of nowhere.
I`ve seen shoaib in action several times, went over his action frame by frame, and have no doubts about his chucking...hyper extensive elbow be damned.
Wonder how he was `cleared`.

Ok, here are Chowk`s guidelines...
We encourage all to participate in discussions. All we ask you to be is civil. If your post includes words or masked references that are offensive, crude, repugnant, or obscene, your post will be duly deleted.
Good, now let us take a look at post #16
Maybe you should stop drinking your (or someone elses) urine and get your head in order. Too much falatio is not good for you. So please do not do this.
That of course was looked at by a moderator and was thought fit to post. I get it...how can it be offensive when Yindoo Banias are abused?!! Right.....
I had a post of mine censored because I called a poster a moron for claiming that the name Anal Dickshit is a written in the Mahabharata so it is ok...
[SIGH] Why am I not surprised?!!...

Another interesting aspect of the game would be the millions and billions of ruppees spent on Betting. I hope the players really go for the game... but you never know if some of these matches are fixed up before hand....
Both Pakistani and Indian players, ofcourse not on the current teams, have been implicated in accepting bribes.... Like Azhar and Salim Malik.
The bookies seems to have as much stake in these games as the two government of India and Pakistan.

Shamsul just curious these cowards aka hindoobanias also have won a few times against the almighty Pakistani squad, how does one explain that. I remember a certain thrashing of Akhtar last march in WC. Do you chalk that up to one-offs when Allah liked these hindoobanias more and Mohammad and Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Qadri Sahib bestowing their blessings on the kafirs.
Remember Allah saves......but Gretzky gets the rebound and SCORES!!!

From the Right:
The author lays out a solid escape strategy by claiming at the onset that he merely is presenting the Pakistani perspective but some of the drivel here is just flat out wrong.
“On a backdrop of anti-Pakistan frenzy fuelled by Hindutva fervour, Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram tag-teamed as coach-captain and snatched unlikely victories at Chennai and Kolkata.”
Huh???
Yes. A couple of 98 lbs shiv sena types did raid the Wankhede pitch, dug it up with stumps and lit a 1 square foot fire aided by a friggin chulloo full of petrol. That sounds more like a snot nosed teenage prank than ‘a backdrop of anti-Pakistan frenzy fuelled by Hindutva fervor’. Are you claiming that that event equates what India will be facing this time?? India managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Chennai and the Pakistani’s got a standing ovation from 60,000 people and a lap of honor.
So is this Indian tour comparable to the last Pakistani tour? First let Shiv sena organize itself into a bunch of underground movements that has thousands of people from 35 different countries living in the hills training with AKs and RPGs. Then let a vast portion of the Indian government fund and condone their activities. Then let them get pissed off at the government and try a few assassination attempts. Then let them start blowing up busses with assorted humans in them every week. Then let them fly a couple of planes into buildings. The let them issue death threats to major Pakistani players. After that have a test in Karachi. Then see if India wins. And then finally see that in the event that India wins a game suddenly after it looked like Pakistan was going to walk away with it, see if the Indian team gets to do a victory lap of honor to a wild standing ovation from the crowd.
Then we will compare this Indian tour to the last Pakistani tour!
From the Left:
Yeah, yeah all that is fine but the bottom line is that the Indians will still get hammered. It does not matter how good a batting line up India has and how inconsistent Pakistan is. The Pakistanis got dominated by New Zealand but all it took was a half hour from Akhtar and the series was won. India could be 100 for 1 and then Akhtar could do a Dravid Tendulkar combo like last time and India would be hard pressed to get to friggin 150.
India’s two seamer – one spinner starting combination is Zaheer, Agarkar, and Kumble. The fourth bowler would be picked between Harbhajan and Nehra depending on the track.
So that’s your starting five.
Well, Zaheer & Nehra are gimpy and Agarkar, Kumble & Harbhajan are flat injured.
So in this series India’s bowling lineup will be spearheaded by a nineteen-year-old greenhorn called Irfan Pathan. He will be supported by a gimpy Zaheer Khan and a shy kid called L. Balaji. Spearheading the spin attack may be an uncapped kid called Ramesh Powar.
Pathan, Balaji, Zaheer and Powar. Fearsome!

history might be on the side of pakistan but present pakistan team has a weak batting line-up, lacks experienced players and too much is made of shoaib and sami. shoaib was smashed all over the ground by tendulkar in 2003 world cup match.
my prediction is that first one day match will be won by india. rest we will see.

While cricket is big in Pakistan, it is far bigger in India. I noticed this, after watching one of the World Cups with a large group of Indian friends, over a period of two weeks. In Pakistan, only the games in which Pakistan played, sold out. In India, regardless of who was playing, the games seem to sell out. Also, when India lost to Sri Lanka, the crowd littered the field with bottles, and the match had to be called off. In a later series, when India lost to Pakistan, the whole crowd had to be forced out of the stadium. This shows how emotional Indians are about cricket.
It is quite obvious that India`s refusal to play Pakistan, had quite a bit to do with the fear of losing to Pakistan. Apparently, that can have poiltical affects in India. During this time of cricket ban, every other type of Indian team toured Pakistan - inlcuding polo, water polo, track, kabbadi, ludo, chess, sychronized swimming, ice-dancing, curling, hopscotch, soccer etc.
But not the cricket team. Apparenly cricket was the only sport affected by what was going on in Kashmir. Others were not affected.
Now that the cricket team is touring, it is an idication that the relations are improving. But more importantly that the Indian politicians feel that India has a chance to defeat Pakistan, in cricket. Otherwise, with an election around the corner, they would not have taken a risk.
I would tend to agree with the Indian politicians. This is about a good a chance as India has ever had to defeat Pakistan. Tradiitionally, Pakistan has dominated India in all forms of cricket. However, now India has finally started showing some spine overseas. And Pakistan is still rebuilding (although it has won two test series in succession - not a an easy task).
Indian batsmen are too good to not be able to score on Pakistani wickets, regardless of who is bowling. So they will score a lot of runs. The key will be whether Indian bowlers, who are below average, can get the Pakistani batting out, which is, at best average. If they cannot get the Pakistanis out, then we will have a series of draws.
Based purely on current form and experience level, my prediction would be that India wins the Test series 1-0. And it wins the one-day series 3.2.
However, there is one missing link: Indian teams always put themselves under too much pressure, while playing Pakistan. Thus even with better teams, they end up losing. Pakistan does the same, when it is playing South Africa (not counting the last series).
So if this missing link is present, I will have to say the result will be 1-1 Test series, and 3-2 (India`s favor) in the one-day series.
P.S. If Harbajan and Kumble do not tour than 1-0 (Pakistan`s favor) in Test series, since Nehra, Ajit and Zaheer will not be able to do much on Pakistani wickets.

Let me put my neck on the line and make a humble and very modest prediction:
Pakistan will beat India. Our strategy will be very simple. We will begin by instilling fear in their hearts by having Imran Khan out for a handshake with them at the start of first match. My reliable sources have told me that even today, young Indian mothers curse their disobedient sons by saying ``may bhagwan make you face imran`s in-swing``. Then we will proceed to terrorize them on the field. Shoaib and Sami will be instructed to teach Indian batsmen what an in-swinging outswing ball is like; what an out-swinging inswing yorker is like; and finally, how to avoid flying shards from shattered wickets. From there on a slow process of dismantling Indian spirit will begin. This process will culminate with the defection of India`s top ranked batsmen to Pakistan. They will be granted assylum on humanitarian basis, so they will never have to fear facing Pakistani artillary, otherwise known as Shoaib and Sami.
Dhaka will be avenged.
And that is just my modest prediction.

Saad,
I am hopeful that in the newly emerging thaw between the two countries and the bonhomie at a people to people level, we will stop this maniacal, proxy war mindset on the cricket grounds. It is just too immature. It is fine to be competitive and have a healthy rivalry, but let`s keep it at that. What is the big deal about winning or losing in a cricket match anyway ? Let`s say that in the next 100 matches, India loses to Pakistan. Will it change anything in India or Pakistan ? I don`t think so. The same holds true for Pakistan. We desis tend to get emotional and carried away over useless matters, to the point that fans start making death threats to players, mourning collectively at a loss as if someone has died, or celebrating in a frenzied manner over a victory. It is time that we grew up on both sides and take it simply as a sporting contest. The rest of the world laughs at the sight of a bunch of brown beggars fighting over a cricket match.

Would be an amazing series. India`s current batting attack on subcontinental wickets is sensational. The youthful look of the Pakistani batting will be tested.
Though Pakistan maintains an advantage in the bowling department, it hasn`t really come out with a sensational bowler since Shoaib Akhtar.
