Precisely!! Even in most Hindu`s who eat meat there seems to be always some ``guilt`` associated with meat-eating.
In honor of this converstion, I think I`ll treat myself to one of these, this weekend!

Sorry dude, think I went a bit overbord there. You know how difficult it is to find a place to live in Mumbai. Still gives me the shivers when I remember those days :-)

{So what if we veggies are in a minority, doesn`t mean all you meat loving Indian majority can mock us and deny us our culture? If there is one minority that is going to be subtly oppressed soon in India, its` going to be the vegetarians.}
This part of my post #547 was said in jest. Perhaps I should have put a smiley at the end.
Your anecdote about the IITKGP and ``jain menu`` was quite funny. It`s very common in Western India and perhaps to a lesser extent in Northern India (you can definitely find `jain menu` in Rajasthan for sure) to find jain versions of dishes in most restaurants.
You eastern Indians need to educate yourselves about your other bretheren a little bit more :)
Your post #553:
Yes I live in the US. But India is not US, so why single out the vegetarians to cry about discrimination in India? There are Bohra Muslim buildings in Mumbai in which flats can only be sold to other Bohra Muslims and even other Muslims don`t have a chance there. And this is just one example out of the scores I could quote if I had the time. Besides some communities in the US don`t allow pets or pets larger than a certain size. Is that discriminatory?
Your parents` Jain friend was taking things to the extreme and I think it was extremely disrespectful of her to behave that way. But you can`t take extreme behavior to discredit the reasonable expectations of the majority of vegetarians viz ``Please make sure no meat pieces get in my food``. That is certainly not too much to ask.
Most non-veg people in India wouldn`t want beef cooked in their flats. Similarly many vegetarians wouldn`t want meat cooked in their houses. Simple as that.
[Are you one of those who went around Mumbai buses pasting stickers that said ``eating eggs causes cancer``? ]
Nope, I was never involved in promoting vegetarianism. Some people do go to absurd lengths (like in your example above), but if non-veg folks and the poultry industry have the right to telecast half truths about eggs (Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao unday) on national TV, the vegetarians have the right to propogate their lifestyle.

Oops! Sorry about that last repost.

[i heard that the al-kabeer brand packaged mutton available in india is a jain-owned bussiness. is it true?]
You must be joking ! :) Highly unlikey that the above is true :)
[also, i find it hilarious that the largest packaged chicken brand in india is called ``Venkis`` short for venkateshwara hatcheries..it would be equivalent to Abraham brand Bacon. ]
Must be some Reddy guy from Andhra. Aren`t they big time meat eaters and also Tirupati Balaji bhakts?
BTW I have seen this air of moral superiority that some veggies have, but I have also seen many non-veggies esp of the older generation being apologetic about eating non-veg. I think not eating meat is(was?) definitely a good thing in Hinduism, which explains why even meat eaters refrain from meat on festival days.
Lately however the tables have turned, and the non-veggies never desist from giving veggies a hard time about their food preferences..
I believe in not lecturing anyone on their food choices and expect my non-veg friends to never pressure me to eat something I don`t want to. Mutual respect goes a long way :)
MaheshG:
The ``oppressed minority`` part was a joke..

vegetarians are great (i am one many times). its the distaste they show towards meat-eaters that is offensive. they seem to think (and indicate by body language etc) that meat-eaters are morally inferior (which may be) and by corollary they are morally superior. this is a fallacy, since they may be very lowly in other aspects, the false sense of superiority as just one of them.
this actually applies to most of the ``righteous``.
rush limbaugh at times tirades against veggies that is hilarious

Yeah right!
Are you one of those who went around Mumbai buses pasting stickers that said ``eating eggs causes cancer``?
What has that got to do with anything.
But I have to mention that I disagree with Satyavad`s statement about vegetarians being an oppressed minority.

Bongdongs,
Of course we are sensistive to her religion and would have been careful with her food, but her insistence on bringing her own plate shows an illogical behaviour no different than the ``hindu-pani`` ``muslim-pani`` of previous generations. My parents took it in good humor, I would have kicked her ass out.
I would have kicked her ass out too. That is only because she was bringing her prejudices to your house. If she wanted to prejudicial in her own house then it is her right to be so.

“A 15% minority in 1947 end up being only 6% in 1971. Currently, it stands at a pathetic 3%”
Agree w/ you partially! Actually the minority population in Pakistan was about 18 to 21 % after the partition in 1948. Approximately 1 million Sindhi Hindus left after 1948 and the reasons were not riots. Not a single Hindu was killed in Sindh in 1948 due to religious affiliations.
Anyways, most of those 18 to 21% referred above lived in East Pakistan. So the number for west Pakistan was never more than 6% as you suggested. After 1971 the current Pakistan had about 6 percent of minority of Christians, Hindus and other religion and Hindus were about 3 percent of that and that number still stands. Show me one instance of any large or even small-scale religious riots in Sindh where most of the Hindus reside. 95% on Hindus in Pakistan reside in Sindh and they are still there.
There has never been a single incidence of Hindu killing in Pakistan due to his/her religion. Even the massacre in Gujarat was nowhere close to ethnic cleansing as we accept the term to be. And you are calling ethnic cleansing in Pakistan where there never were any religious riots. Some Hindu property in Sindh was damaged after the Barbri Mosque demolition but not a single Hindu life was lost in those disturbances.
Jang-
Sindh Hindu left Sindh almost after a year of partition and in peace. All Hindusi were not rich in Sindh either. Those who were poor ended up in refugee camps in Bombay and Delhi but ones who had money were at least able to take currency and jewelry with them.
Stuka-At least two districs in Sindh are still Hindu Majority. Only Hindus win assembly seats from there.

[...i did? you did?...]
while i am fairly certain (i believe it was the north-south kind of comparison where your guy from bangalore was aghast at the rental-discrimination against muslims in the north...or something similar to that. i may even search chowk archives if i have the time and inclination), the point i was trying to make is more than that -
i do not disbelieve that non-muslims (not just hindus) hesitate/deny rental accomodation to muslims in india (a phenomenon that probably increases with each communal clash), the reasons for this would vary. it is unreasonable to call `every` such incident `just because we are muslims`. the same person who denied the muslim may also deny a non-muslim for the same reason, and i was curious to know if that may have been the case with your friend.
if one is renting out a part of his own house to others, it is entirely upto the owner`s fancy to decide who he wants to have as a tenant. it is unreasonable to expect that `as long as a person can pay the rent, he has the right to live wherever the for-rent sign is posted`. if you were a single guy and you were turned down because the owner has young daughters, would you claim the owner hates young guys? you may be disappointed, but that should be the end of it. government properties are different where anti-discriminatory laws may apply.

//...Do you even know what ethnic cleansing is? ..//
I think I do. Didn`t I tell a minute ago about hindus fleeing from Bdesh and settling in my hometown? You got to pay attention man!! Those hindus are victims of ethnic cleansing - but they deserve it. I mean how dare they live in lands exclusively demarcated for muslims??
Anyway ... look mian - you don`t have to be defensive about cleansing hindus from land of pure. I remember - sometime back, you gleefully admitted how paki army systematically cleansed hindus in (east) pakistan in 1971. See - this is nothing to be ashamed of - I mean after all, pakistan was created exclusively for muslims - right?
+++
//...Hindus in Gujarat killed 4 to 5 thousand Muslims and the whole world was outraged against that massacre...//
Of course. As I told you before - it`s a cosmic killing cycle. Gujju hindus have been thirsting for revenge for ages. They got a chance and eliminated some x thoussand muslims. Just like you guys eliminated a couple hundred thousand hindus in east pakistan....... In terms of quantity and quality of this never-ending cleansing operations - you pakis are still miles ahead of hindus could ever do. So why complain??
+++++
By the way - you claimed ``whole world was outraged against that massacre``. Well ... I am kind of sceptical about this claim. Apart from the usual customary barb from US State Dept and a bunch of other busy-bodies, nobody really gave a flying f** about it.......I mean - BJP gov`t is still going good ...... India is still called largest democracy ..... no sanctions ... no nothing...... Just like nobody gave a flying f**k when you pakis were murdering hindus in east pakistan in 1971.
See - for the rest of the world - it don`t matter how you wretched un-washed barbarians live .... or die. Nobody cares. Actually world would secretly be happy if hindus and muslims just eliminate each other. That will be a good riddance, for them.
