I told you so...
1. (On my Sonia article):That she would get Rahul into politics like a good Indian mother, when there was only talk about Priyanka. In her recent interview in Hindustan Times, she has spoken about her daughter having to take care of her two little kids and husband.
2. Pak cricket and BJP: Now Virender Sehwag`s wedding is getting `political` mileage too. The flags welcoming the team were also primarily the BJP party flag.
3. The Mandir: The PM said in the much-publicised NDTV interview that this would be the job of ``sadhu aur sant``. What happened to the talkof agreeing to a judicial verdict in its Vision Document?
I told you so...and before jumping the gun, just wait and watch, at the very least.

Thanks for the info.

//.... if they wanna fight their battles as Muslims than in a democracy that should be respected ...//
Nah - I don`t think that is a good idea. See - we do things differently in India, at least in theory. That is called One Nation Theory. Hindu,Muslim,Christian, sikh, whoever - all one nation. So nobody should ``battle`` as hindu/muslim/chrisitan or whatever - everybody should battle as Indians. Because - the goals are the same - battle is for same objectives.
See - that`s why we have pakistan ... pakistan was created for a system that will provide ways for separate battles ... muslims , hindus, or shias or ahmedis .... they all will battle separately. That`s why you guys have separate electorates and all other mechanisms.

Will try to keep my response brief, lest the writer/columnist feels this may be a deviation from the stated topic...
Quote:
`` While there was pressure on India from the US and even the USSR had told India that it would veto any Security Council resolution so long as India confined itself to action in East Pakistan, one has to look at what options each country had.``
Allow me to make some correction here.
USSR did tell India that it/she may not be able to use its veto in SC for long but that was about finishing the war as quickly as possible and it was not about limiting the war to East Pakistan/Bangladesh. USSR was under tremendous pressure from US on not using its veto and USSR felt it/she may not be able to withstand that pressure for long so the message given to India was that they have very limited time to do the job.
One of the sources of this version is, Lt Gen J S Aurora. Here, in the meanwhile, I am quoting some excerpt which have been part of the interview given by Maj Gen Jacob.
Quote from the link:
``We realised that any campaign to be successful had to be swift. The United Nations was putting great pressure on us and also the Russians had indicated that they did not want to exercise their veto any more,`` Jacob explained. ``Therefore any campaign had to be quick. We realised that Niazi (the Pakistani Army commander in East Pakistan) was going to fortify the towns and defend them in strength. We therefore decided not attack any towns but bypass them using subsidiary tracks to get to our objective: Dhaka.``
http://www.subcontinent.com/1971war/east.html
Quote:
``China could have done diddly squat because the Himalayan passes were still snowbound. ``
Here is another quote from the same link, which tells/suggests, if Chinese could not have done anything, the following action would not have taken by Indian military.
Quote from the link:
``Jacob`s commander, Lt. Gen. Aurora, provided full support for his Army`s own plans and allowed Jacob to pull down troops kept in reserve for a possible attack by the Chinese. Some of these troops had to be brought into battle so hurriedly that the only way was to paradrop them. This was accomplished with the help of the IAF and soon soldiers geared to fight the Chinese in the high mountains found themselves in the tropical riverine areas of Tangail in East Pakistan.``
Quote:
``India should have occupied a sizeable portion of West Pakistan and demanded that Pakistan hand over ``Azad`` Kashmir and the Northern Territories if it wanted Karachi back.``
This was not even part of the plan/s. May I suggest, read that link on this war and there is plenty of information on this subject.
On Israel, Stuka has already replied but to the follwowing sentence, I do feel like responding to.
Quote:
``The problem is that India never had the balls that Israel has.``
India never had the balls? Pray, what is the basis for this sweeping statement, and factually incorrect, at that?
Here, we are talking about 1971 war, in which India very successfully broke an existing country into two and it is being said, India never had the balls..
Let us go back to August 1947. Would like to remind, at the time of independence, J&K was not part of India, and today, major part of J&K state is part of India. And India never had balls?
Later, Goa/Sikkim too became part of India. And India never had balls?
Sure, 1962 was an exception but how can it be denied that even to this day, China and India have land/border dispute. If India never had balls then how come China a huge and powerful country has not been able to take the land/territory which it claims it belongs to her?
Above are few of the examples. Sure there are some more.

Talk/version about Gandharva Vivah came from (late) Devyani Chaubal who used to write for Star & Style magazine. It was she who broke the story about marriage between Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Perhaps, she even had some photographs. However, stories about Dharmendra having converted have been around for quite a while now. If I am not mistaken, Dharmendra took the name of Dilawar Khan and Hema as Hamida Bano, according to the stories.

``if they wanna fight their battles as Muslims than in a democracy that should be respected and at least some enlightened and educated people should be able to understand that.``
HP, could you explain how exactly one fights its battles as Muslims? Are you refering to violence, sharia, or plain personal law? Also, by extension, should we (well, atleast the educated and enlightened among us) respect VHP for fighting their battles as hindus? Also, please tell the pakistani formula for avoiding riots and peaceful destruction of religious buildings, we are all ears..and article on this will be really nice.

I was not lurking...have been out, therefore some of it IS news...
Earlier, one thought that Dharmendra and Hema Malini had a `gandharva vivah`, at least that is what she has mentioned. I was suprised to know he had converted; there are several others who did. I do not think he believes in/practises or has anything to do with Islam, and do not care.
And I do not think he should get the Muslim vote only because of this. I do nto think the BJP should get any votes...but then you already know that.
Re. Husain taking `Meenaxi` out from the theatres, I think it is ridiculous...how many times do I have to say that when some Muslims had objected to Azhar signing his name on his shoes for the company that sponsored him, I was very clear: we have all sorts of unsavoury characters with `holy` names, so why this noise?
And while I am here: Those who do not agree with my views (and there may be be a few/many), I would request you to maintain some modicum of dignity while addressing me and others, since I accord you the same..and when I cannot I skip responding. If some of you say you are who you are, in terms of your qualifications and exposure, the least you can do is not cheapen yourselves.

While there was pressure on India from the US and even the USSR had told India that it would veto any Security Council resolution so long as India confined itself to action in East Pakistan, one has to look at what options each country had.
The US could have done diddly squat except propose a Security Council resolution condemning India and demanding that India withdraw from West Pakistan. Even the Seventh Fleet was sitting in the Bay of Bengal and of no use against Indian forces operating in the Western theater.
China could have done diddly squat because the Himalayan passes were still snowbound.
Pakistan could have attempted a defense but the morale of the Pak Army was zilch after losing East Pakistan.
India should have occupied a sizeable portion of West Pakistan and demanded that Pakistan hand over ``Azad`` Kashmir and the Northern Territories if it wanted Karachi back.
The problem is that India never had the balls that Israel has. Israel does what it pleases despite being 1000000% dependent on the US. So what if there was a Security Council resolution against India? Does Israel care how many resolutions it has pending against it?
Doing things halfway is an Indian hallmark.

`` Indira Gandhi`s mistake was in not marching toward Karachi in 1971.``
A comment like that is bit strange coming from a well informed/read person like yourself.
Here is part of the story..
It was not her mistake, as it was made very clear to her by US directly and through some friends not to walk towards West Pakistan. Sure fight did take place on the west front too but message had been conveyed to her. Creation of Bangladesh was a foregone conclusion and was accepted in principle by major power/US but beating West Pakistan was a big No. Later on, US also helped Pakistan in getting its 90000+ prisoners released. Recall, Nixon and Mrs G did not have even friendly relations and Dr Kissinger tried his best to instigate China, and told Chinese amabassador to US/Washington to make movements on their side and US will not only turn a blind eye but also will do its best to assist. Sure, certain things were not known at that time but message had been sent to India.

Why is the BJP keeping quiet? Why don`t they dig up baptismal records to show Rahul Gandhi is Roman Catholic and so he may also have lied on his election petition?

I remember having a short discussion in chowk about this. We were speculating what he would do if his ``work of art`` were ever criticized by muslims. Well - now we know and this is not a pretty picture.
So where is the outrage?
