I also recently visited these amazing sites. Since i was not accompanied by a gora, I only had to pay Rs. 20 :-). And I too bought a sack of maltas from the roadside, though had to give away most of them to the driver of the taxi we had hired from Islamabad. And I too was struck by the designs of the ornaments in the ``locked`` room because they were quite similar to the subcontinental fashions even now. And I agree that the scene from the diggings at the plateau (it is called the Jalian site, derived from the old Ja-walian or the abode of the walis) is really very calming and inspirational. The place was known for its walis or faqirs. Guru Nanak had a confrontation with a nearby wali and the place, known as the Punja Sahib, is one of the most holy places to the Sikhs. That holy place in Hasan Abdal is only about 10 kms from Taxila and watching the imprint of a human hand, believed to be that of Guru Nanak, is an inspirational sight.
Talking of the old blackened wheat seeds, I collected a couple of them as souvenirs, not from Taxila but from Moen jo Daro. Indeed, one is free to collect as many of them from Moen jo Daro as one wants, given the poor state of caretaking at that site. BTW the seed was taken by me with the full permission of the caretaker at Moen jo Daro (and without any bakhshish!).

Amjed
We are completely underutilizing the touristic value of these historical archeological sites - there are ample sites to promote ``faith tourism`` in Sikkhism, Budhism and Hinduism.
In California, they just pick out an old tree. Label it ``Oldest Tree`` - and start charging $ 10, start photographing people with it, start selling its T-shirts, Caps .........
