An Indian in Pakistan

Khamkwa # 159, the basic lungi, much preferred by people of all communities in South India and by Muslims/Hindus/Sikhs etc in Bengal, UP, Punjab has a better chance of displaying the family jewels than does the basic lungi. Surprisingly, while the lungi is associated with Muslims in some parts of India, I did not see any on the street in Pakistan.

Deepak, (author) . . . did you need to spend a lot of time in Delhi for your visa, or make a separate trip from Hyderabad/AP to Delhi first? Just curious. I understand there are some moves afoot to encourage tourism to historical/religious locations basis economic strata of the applicants . . . did you hear anything about that?

Imagine, after all this board has heard about Hyderabad/AP, (usual stuff about riots) you end up taking them to Salarjung Museum and Golconda Fort, before driving to Sultan`s Battery . . . and bring them back for that chicken tongue dish (is it still around?).

HP/Ahmedzai: If I may throw in my two bits. Democracy is not a static concept. It evolves. Thus, while it may be OK for now, under the circumstances, to accept the ``guided democracy`` of musharaff, this cant go on for ever. With every year, we should see the people`s voice reflected more and more in the legislature. With every year, we should see the country`s leaders held more and more accountable. Thus, the march towards democracy is perhaps more important in the long run than exactly where we happen to be today.

rsridhar: What you say to ahmedzai about being an equal opportunity critic of both India and Pakistan is true. How about taking some time off from criticism, and becoming an equal opportunity appreciater of both countries. Surely there is plenty of things one could fall in love with in either country. Also good for the blood pressure to be more appreciative and less critical of things. (as a doctor, I am sure you will understand the significance of keeping one`s blood pressure down). ;-)

In #114 I didnot mean to say that money from the Punjab educational budget was going to LeT.

I meant to say an EQUIVALENT of 41% of Punjab educational budget of 2002-2003, or alternately an EQUIVALENT of 9% of Punjab educational budget of 2003-2004 was being donated to LeT voluntarily by average Pakistanis. I pointed out this equivalence in answer to Romair`s statement that average Pakistanis have moved on from their hatred of Indians.


Since I had posted in #89 that the donations to LeT was in the form of sacrificial hides of animals sacrificed at Id, it is not clear how you misunderstood as you apparently have.

One thing I didnot point out was that the Punjab educational budget is for the whole year, while the jihadi collection amount was in January-March 2004, with 9 months more of fund collection.

Gee - thanks. Somehow I have a feeling that indians really don`t give two hoots about how pakis ``paint`` all hindus. It don`t matter either way.

At the end of the day - Indians have a collective responsibility to make sure that no mass murder, likes of what we have seen in Godhra and Gujrat, ever happens again. Which means - hindus have a collective responsibility to prevent Gujrat-type killings ...... and Muslims have a collective responsility to prevent Godhra-type killings......Kashmiri muslims have a collective responsibility towards Pundits...... Christisn majority in Nagaland or wherever have similar responsibility towards minority hindus in their area.

Similarly - Pakis have collective responsibility to make sure Jihadis and other assorted terrorists donot cross over to India to kill and create havoc.

Let`s not run away from these facts.
