I do believe that Pakistan has a long way to go as far as mainstream cinema is concerned. Re. television serials they are still better than us, though again the standards are not what they used to be... Indian cinema has indeed created a market for itself even for niche films.

No, I missed `Khamosh Paani` at the festival.

Re. Mumbai...stuka and you...

I have been pleasantly surprised that often when I say Bombay during my travels, there are people who pause and remind me, ``Uhhh...hmmmm...now it is Mumbai, right?`` They may need to get the intonation right, but it isn;t such a dud. Or maybe I meet aware people :)

Karachi Kamera certainly was an interesting and different viewpoint on Pakistan. A fact that
many from that country are well aware of is that Pakistani culture precedes the birth of the country by a few thousand years, yet it is still in the process of evolution. Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta are changing rapidly. Liberals have had a really tough time since Zia but still somehow continue to function within the elite and Middle Classes. The numerous poor of Pakistan are too busy trying to make a living to be in a defined category.
To answer your questions ``Cricket from Lahore``, although it was very well done, it had technical difficulties during its run (or was it part of the movie?) that were somewhat irritating.
On the JCCSF I do do not have much information, but I`m glad that this time I was not looking for a parking spot a mile away in the tenderloin district of SF or sitting on the floor in a old and smelly theatre to watch art films. This facility is beautiful.

Pakistanis can make good movies too. India is ahead and has also cultivated a market for its films which Pakistanis have not. Indian people are also a lot more encouraging in the area of the arts in general.

On ``Mumbai`` you will have to remind people of many Nanis because few will recognize that name here. Now if you said ``Bombay`` it would be a different story....

Just out of curiosity, have you seen Khamosh Pani?

This sounds so very interesting. Quite a melange, I must say. If this is a glimpse into what Pakistani docu-features are like, then they must attempt what we in India these days call crossover films. (Pakistanis have not got the hang of masala, at least in cinema.)

Re. the query, ``What is Karachi?`` and the replies... agar koi firang ne Mumbai ke baare mein aisa kuchh kahaa hota tau main tau usko uskee nani yaad dila deti (I guess that is the difference between `Aandhi aur toofan` and `Khamosh paani` :)

Thank you, Ras. I do hope that we get to see this in India, too.

For far too long have perceptions on Pakistan been left to those with a particular axe to grind. Whether these lop-sided portrayals are done by outsiders or Pakistanis themselves is probably not relevant anymore, point is that simple observational films like the one`s you have reviewed place a perspective without prejudice on the table for those willing to partake.

Questions:-

a) What were the problems with ``Cricket in Lahore``?
b) Has this event been covered by the media back in Pakistan, especially the support from the JCCSF?
