It is interesting t see the currents and countercurrents among and within each respondent. It is obvious that the classical and popular musics are the most obvious bonds between the two population groups. Keep on talking and thinking of the bonds that bind and sooner or later they start acting across the artificial boundaries!!!!!

I would like to report that the artiste community in Pakistan is not at all narrow-minded. They are proud of their identity and yet graciously accept that much of their heritage is part Indian.

I have often wondered, though, as to why Hindu musicians prefix their names with Pandit and Muslims with Ustad...and why is there no honorific title for women? Gangubai Hangal, Shobha Gurtu, Kishori Amonkar...

What is Bharata`s contribution to Music and Dance ?

What is the natyashastra ?

Personally, I tend to call it ``Persian Classical Music`` or ``Hindustani Classical Music``. I refuse to call it ``Shastriya Sangeet`` since I believe this music has only a tenuous connection to any shastras.

On the other hand, if SPIC-MACAY had chosen to include a couple of Carnatic musicians in the group, they would have made your heads spin by their music`s rhythmic complexity.

At least in the case of Mohanjodaro there was the intervening variable of time. Here, merely politics.

That is interesting! It is like the Britishers recounting the story of Mohenjodaro to the very dwellers of that land who have forgotten their legacy.
How interesting it would be to tell the Pakis that the weakest Moghul of their Pak Studies was the most cultured person of ``their`` times and that the Indians take great pride in considering his court songs as ``Indian`` Classical Music. Two cheers for Mohammad Shah Rangeeley and Niyamat Khan!
