For the politically-minded but unsuspecting ones, there was this T-shirt being sold (perhaps by the National Geographic Society, I think it was advertised on its magazine) that said ``Reunite Gondwanaland``.

So where would the author place the Grand Tetons of Asia? (Evil grin as usual!)

Fitaa - It was very nice reading your article. Man`s fascination with mountains goes back since his inception. They are the ultimate geological symbol of power and grandiosity and aloofness.

On a side note, I have often wondered why is it that europeans covered thousands of miles to come to our regions and be the first ones to climb these mountains. Everest was first conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary, not to mention that all the previous notable failed attempts were also led by europeans. Similarly, K-2, as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania was also first conquered by europeans, rather than the local inhabitants.

Obviously, one reason might be that in some of the local cultures, such as around Mt. Everest, they considered mountain peaks to be God`s residing place. But I also think reasons might just be the the lack of inquistiveness, laziness, indifference, and perhaps cost-benefit analysis of spending the time climbing the mountain for a useless venture versus ploughing in the field to get some income.

Anyways, great job.
