singularity #7: ``More Rushdies, Anwar shaikhs, Ibn Warraqs, Taslimas and Van goghs will come.``

I doubt it. And I certainly hope not. There is only so much money to be made by creating controversy around religion. Most of the poeple on your list and a few others, have milked it for all that they could. There was a time, when one could create controversy, get a fatwa passed against one`s self, and get a good publishing contract. But I think this phase will eventually pass.....

Anyone looking towards Rushdie and Nasreen for any kind of revival of Islamic thought are more lost than most of the mullahs out there..........What is needed is to take the debate out of the hands of the mullahs and the Rushdies. Both of these groups are in it for personal fame and authority..........None of either`s groups` works show any kind of knowledge of the subject. They do show a strong desire of prejudice and bigotry, as well as a desire to create profits through controversy...........

On the other hand, people like Abdus Salam, Dr. Riffat Hussain (my two favorites writers on Islam) and their writings on religion, will eventually become more popular.....

Fitaa Feeraz,
Nice thought provoking article. Too bad it is gonna be hijacked by the Mullah brigand which is gonna make tall claims like KORAN already stated Einstein`s Theory of relativity and that Mohamad is the LAST Scienctist and no other scientist`s claim is true. All other scientists are all infidel/Satan trying to obliterate ALLAH`S words.

If science proves anything, it is that religion of the past tried to play the role of today`s science and was successful to some extent. But it also clearly proves that religions after all is man`s conception and so it is not complete. If ISLAM is complete then it should have stated Theory of relativity or Quantum Mechanics or the arrival of Micro chips etc.

It is time that people move away from the past and start living in the present. Already Muslims are lagging behind in Science, technology, Research and development of industry or corporations. So it is high time to start asking questions and critical evaluation of koran and mohamad. It is bound to happen as information becomes open and available for everybody at the click of a mouse. Information is no longer under the control of mullahs or churches. So the information age will open up many avenues for anybody who wants to think on their own.

More Rushdies, Anwar shaikhs, Ibn Warraqs, Taslimas and Van goghs will come. Cant issue fatwas to all and kill all. So by the end of this century islam will be forced to jump into 21st century. If history is a pointer those who lag behind will be forced by events and circumstances and the basic human survival instinct to get rid off the il-logical theories. Theories about NON-muslims being all infidels/satan who go to hell (no matter they are Gandhi, Buddha or Confucious) will be cleansed and there will be a more modern, tolerant and acceptable version of islam coming out of the chaos.

So basically the end of the century will see to that Dogmas are left off to the past. That is a big jump to human evolution and thought processes.

Nasah,

You heard of the string theory which states that a big bang is made every time a giant membrane hits another membrane. Think of it as a sheet of cloth touching a sheet of water. The ripple is a big bang. Another way to think of it would be two wires coming into contact. As they do so, an electrical discharge is released. That discharge is like the explosion of stars galaxies etc etc. This means that a Big bang is not uncommon.

Physics is fascinating though I know didly squat of it. Scientists and creative folk are very much alike because in the end the best of them take leaps into the unknown.

According to the String Theory, Big Bang happened due to the collision of two Branes. It may happen again and may result in yet another Brane (another universe), and so on. Hence it may not be a beginning, and may very well be continuation of `Everything`. The concept of `Everything` is also evolving and hence the second name of `String Theory` is `Theory of Everything`. More interestingly, there are five String Theories that were put forth by scientists. However, recently Dr. Ed Wittens, a scientist known to be the Einstein of our age, was able to prove that the five String Theories are basically a mirror image of each other, hence giving more credibility to the String Theory.

It definitely is a poetry, since it brings out the beauty and imagination that is so fascinating and inspirational...for the young who are yet to get involved in the world of science...there will be so much more to see from the eyes of the scientists.

I was even more enthralled to read about the recent conclusion, that there exists the 11th Dimension, and that there may be other `Branes` existing along side ours, which is the Universe that we can `see`. A `Brane` is just like a slice of bread that exists along side other slices, yet it is completely independent of the other. Each Brane can hold a complete universe as we see it. Hence the proof for parrallel existance of other life existing alongside ours, and we may be completely oblivious of that. (I can`t help thinking about the mention of Djinns in Quran that states the existance alongside the human race and neither can interact with each other. Till 1995, besides the three dimensions, the dimension of time was added and then six more dimensions were defined that could explain the various aspects defined in the String Theory. Super Symmetry is probably going to be the next most important validation of the theoretical physics. Gravitons may be the most important link between the various dimensions that exists in parrallel. If I understood it correctly, a successful understanding of the Gravitons may eventually enable scientists in understanding the connection between the `Branes` that is know as `Warm Spots`. Warm Spots may be the way from one `Brane` into the other. If that becomes possible then, yes we can standing at Times Square at one instance, and in next we can be in Los Angeles....come to think of it..what would happen to all these travel limitations and boundries?....Scientist claim to have solved the Super Symmetry in a matter or 20 to 30 years....give them 50 years more, and we may be using time machines to travel rather than automotives.....how would be the TwentySecond century look like?...Mind Boggling.....They are waiting for the Cern Laboratory to get completed and carry out conclusive research on Gravitons, and it is expected to complete in 2007....at least I will be able to see the possibilities in my life time.......

the question now what existed before Big Bang -- that is on the OTHER side of the Zero point -- of Infinite density -- a contractiong universe of antigravity... opposite to our exoanding side of the Universe ....in another dimension
