This article only goes on to show that Dr. Salam was product of the society he grew in. Sir Isaac Newton was impressed by ideals of Alchemy. Ramanujam recieved visitations from some diety revealing equations. Even Dr, Salam`s father ``a peasant belonging to Jhang had a prophetic dream``. People in general derieve inspiration and hope from varying influences in their life to do something elusive. Some succeed and some never `make it`. For example, Einstein`s spent most of his life looking for an alternate thoery to quantum mechanics esposed by his belief that `God does not play dice`.
In this regard Monsieur Tejpal makes an apt comment .

Passport controversy in Pakistan
``The alliance (MMA) argues that the omission of a religious column would allow Qadianis, a minority sect declared to be non-Muslims in the Pakistani constitution in 1974, to travel to Mecca for pilgrimage.``
Damn U MMA -- so the Qaadiani Muslims are not allowed to perform Hajj -- what a bunch of scoundrels these MMA mullahs are...
so these bearded wahshis think they have the monopoly on Islam....and only Sunni Islam is true Islam -- these pathetic mongrels -- they have nothing better to do in this world than to stoke fires of meaningless sectarianism.......weird weird place Pakistan....
.....India is lucky -- all these schizophrenic misfit savages migrated to Pakistan.....

Dr Salam shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for research in “Grand unification theory”with two others including Steven Weinberg”, the author of ` the first three minutes. In one of his interviews on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. he called himself a non- beliver and that Dr. Abu Salam got his inpiration from religion is, therefore, concidental. Relgion might have inspired Dr. Salam not only in his scientific research but also his moral outlook but actual science should not be confused with religion as in this case both a beliver and a non- beliver reached the same conclusions.

hamidm,
Agreed about skepticism … and I am quite comfortable with the idea of Schrodinger’s fornicator god … atheism … and one pissing on my faith.
Religion has contributed quite a bit to the development of human thought … and perhaps that’s why a significant number of civilizations even today have their legal and social framework rooted in religious codes. Religion has also been a curse in more ways then one … and that’s true of any ideology and institution … whether communism, feminism, or what not. It is easy to beat up religion as it has been around for ages, and therefore carries a lot of baggage. Another way of looking at it is that … religion has survived long enough in the first place … in order to have this much baggage. It must have offered a competitive framework for progress of human thought and well-being to have made it so far. No one beats up on communism anymore … as it came and went … all in about a hundred or so years. Science has done great service to the mankind. At the same time, within a couple of hundred years of giving us the light bulb, it has also given us devastating nuclear weapons.
Gill Sahib would have done better by acknowledging all these elements of facts and truth … without making simplistic statements like “science unites and religion divides”. Now that Salam is gone, in his afterglow these pseudo-intellectuals are coming out of their hiding, and going around preaching others on dangers of religion and virtues of science. All this, while they hide their own faith (or so it seems), and themselves hide behind acronyms like GUT. They parrot praises of symmetry in nature … go around dropping terms like weak force and strong force … and have the nerve of chiding poor zainabs for mixing up Salam’s work. And then they accuse others of using Salam for their agenda. I can accept sermons on beauty and symmetry of nature from Einsteins and Salams … but not fake-intellectuals and quacks like Gill Sahib who are used to looking at a very narrow slice of reality ... and choose monikers like “free thinkers” to make a point. Boy ... that was loaded ... whew ...
On a second thought ... may be I am being too harsh on him. May be he’s not all that bad. May be there’s more to him than what I have seen … but in our brief interacts, he rubbed me the wrong way … and ticked me off. May be someday I’ll discover that he’s alright … and write off this experience as not representative of what Gill Sahib truly stands for. May be some day... may be some day ...
BTW, let me know if you have any luck in getting seduced by ahamdi women. I have been trying to have mrs. sattar do it to me for the longest time … without much to show for it. May be it works only with non-Ahmadis (interpret this however you like …). Later dude …

Please read this weeks Friday times online and click on the Tribute section for yet another piece from someone who knew Dr salam personally. An indian hindu, with no interest in promoting islam or embellishing clearly recalls Dr salams religious leanings and his humililty.
enjoy.

I know what you mean. I empathize with you. The degree of narrow-mindedness and intolerance of our learned people amazes me more and more every day. Why can`t they put two and two together and come up with the right answere? Why keep on beating about the bush?
May ALLAH help us all. Wishing you well,
Mohammad Gill

hamidm2:
This is my first post directly addressed to you. I am kind of somewhat reserve and engrossed usually in my own affairs. This post is a reaction to your last post.
I believe merlot and skepticism is a good mix; they make a healthy potion. The uptight people need to use this `daaru` occasionally; it`s good both for physical and mental health. It makes you relax, as you know better. Ordinary mortals like me use it a little more often.

Although it`s little too early but ``happy holidays`` anyhow.

sattar,
........ it really pains me to see sensible people like you and gill sahib and temporal trip over themselves every now and then ..... it just reaffirms my faith (!) that organized religion is the worst thing that happened to mankind .........
......... what we all need is a strong dose of scepticism......... last week we were having dinner at a restaurant and, as usual, i ordered a glass of merlot ...........when my daughter, who was back from college for the holidays, asked me why, as a child, she had to go to sunday school when obviously i didn`t believe in any of islam`s teachings ........ i said, `` but your mom is driving``........ she understood - she is a very smart girl ! ........... my little one, always an opportunist, piped in, ``does that mean i don`t have to go to sunday school this week``......... i said, ``ask your mother``............ mrs hamidm snapped, ``yes, you have to go even though i think it is a waste of time with a father like your abu``.......... they are all healthy sceptics..... alhamdolillah !

hamidm,
I agree ... and would not have a problem if Gill Sahib pissed on his faith as well … while pissing on mine.
But when repeatedly asked, if Muslims were justified in viewing conquest of Persia as fulfillment of a grand prophecy, he refuses to answer. If he is rational and logical the way he portrays himself to be, he would have given a short, sweet answer … no, Muslims were fools in viewing victory over Persia as fulfillment of a grand prophecy. Sadly enough … he has simply refused to answer the question.
His silence here leads one to conclude that he is not being forthright in stating where he stands. And then he hides behind GUT and boson-chasing-willy-nilly theories … while criticizing others of being irrational. And where were his “religion is divisive” theories … when Salam was reciting Quran at the Nobel podium? Aaaaghhh ...

``Judge Sajjad Hussain Sindhar found Iqbal Ahmed guilty of making offensive remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
Meanwhile, Chiniot Civil Judge Mustahsan Ahmed Minhas has issued arrest warrants for several Qadianis wanted by police in 16 blasphemy cases.``(harish-hyd)
it takes a lot of courage of conviction and true love for Zainabs and Sattars of Pakistan -- to still go on singing the praise of -- a rural Islam -- that practices such primitive cruelty against their MUSLIM SECT.......

On second thought: Dude - are you same position as Salam? I mean, do you have multiple wives and don`t know what to do? If yes, then it would make sense why you feel compelled to defend an uncivilized practice such as polygamy.
If not, then we are back to square one. I have no idea why you defend polygamy with such intensity. We used to have shrink on-board here [ Shankar, I think was his name]. But we don`t see him no more - otherwise he could have done some analysis on you. :)
