I read this article.... re-read it. many times...
just to salvage any Nostalgic value out of it.... Then I read This authors Other similiar articles.......
...and was left High and dry.... I found nothing except some stero type perceptions so common in people like him....
the Only constant was the authors repeatedly persistent referecne to His priviliaged upbringing....or his belonging to the priviliaged Class...

Another of those educated analysts of pak situation. Cenemas are killed by the higher real estate prices, give me a break. is there any art form flourishing in pakistan. take the case of novels, poetry, paintings, drama...nothing. Even a simple thing like marathon the females cannot take part. Paintings, well it has to be limited to caligraphy, no images of human beings or living things.
My dear friend, look deeper, beyond the the buildings that screen cenema, there is a developing rotten cancerous core in pak society. The decline of cenema is only a symptom of it.

well theres this iMAX cinema in the making in Karachi - we will all hear about it very soon - I am sure things are changing for good in almost every part of Pakistan and it surely is happening for the good in Karachi thanks to Pres. Mushraff`s support and MQM government specially Dr. Ishrat Ibad Bhai`s personal intrest ... at a same time Karachi Nazim Mr. Naymat Uncle did I must admit tried his best with the best of intensions altough he never had the right support because he always knew he is Nazim of Karachi because MQM bycotted the local elections - but credited must be given to him where he deserved . Karachi`s biggest problem today are street crimes... which should be tackled a.s.a...
as far as cinemas are concerned , who gives a damn.. we got cables :) although iMAX would be good anyway ..cheers

Harking back to reminiscene: oh those Lollywood days of 1970`s with Babra Shareef and Nadeem crumpling the grass in her wet sari, a jeolous on-looking mother-in-law and a moustach walla dare-devil.
Running around trees.
Rain falls.
Rolling on grass.
Hay hay !!

Very interesting indeed!
I wish Pakistani Film makers were still making films like they used to in the 1960`s. Now a days it seems like illitrate people have hijacked the industry and it is no more a source of entertainment for the educated masses.

Movie houses in Pune and Bombay were packed last Nov-Dec. There is a new multiplex craze. Ticket prices at these multiplexes start at Rs 80-100 and inspite of that on friday/sat evenings they look like Dadar station on monday mornings!
I think you are stuck in a different era (no offense :-))

cinemas in india are in a revival via small houses in residential muhallas seating 300 and large multiplexes. reasl reason why karachi cinemas are not economically viable in todays age is becuase they dont show bolyywod blockbusters.

This phenomenon is being observed all over the world. Even in India a lot of theatres have closed and have become shopping malls, which is good because we have too many theatres.

cinema has been killed by booming video market and the insecurity factor in the subcontinent.
