Rohit:
welcome to chowk
pornography is indeed a paradox and there is never an easily acceptable definition nor a consensus about it...and child pornography is even much more of a conundrum...
unfettered freedom is its own worst enemy…we may be born naked and free but do need rules and laws to curb the haiwaan

What is pornographic and what it isnt is as correctly pointed out by you determined by society and keeps on changing. As a matter of fact photographers like David Hamilton and Jock Struges who specialize in nude photography of under age children, namely girls (Below 18 years) call their work as `Art` and not pornography. Despite severe prosecution by the FBI, the courts have held that the works were not pornography.
In India our sexual laws date to the 19th century and even having oral sex is considered an offence.
I however take strong exception to your statement
Quote
The girl wanted to be popular, and from the reports, it is suggested that the public distribution of that tape was a consensual act by the lovers:
Unquote
Could you please tell me which reports these are ??? and whether you know anyone from DPS to make such statements ??? Its easy to blame it all on the girl, isnt it??? Are you are implying that had the girl not wanted to become popular, the clip would not have been distributed ???
The reports that I have from 2 DPS teachers, is that the boy distributed the clip to two of his friends who did not believe his escapades. This is not the first or last time that there has been sex in school, but I think that it was wrong for the boy to start the distribution of it. That shows a poor lack of character on the boy.
You have also said
Quote
The girl and boy involved in the fellatio clip are apparently not ashamed of what they were doing.....It is being said that on being questioned by the Principal, both students did not appear to be ashamed of what they had done.
Unquote
May I ask you why they should be ashamed ?????? I would really like to know. Does anyone who has sex, are to be ashamed ??? or is it because it was caught in camera that they should be ashamed ??? Incidently you should have highlighted the fact that she is one of the best students in her class, consistently scoring over 90 % marks.
Contary to what you have written I know for cetain that it is a media circus and nothing else.
You write
This single event has the potential to start a process that may completely transform the legal, economic, sexual, cultural, judicial and informational landscape of the nation.
Unquote
I hope that you are correct because we do need some more liberal laws. Alas I think that will not happen and we will be as repressed as ever, by the hypocritical double standard morality brigade.
Cheers

I don`t recall exactly who said it about sex in public places ``....so long as they don`t do it in the park and frighten the horses``.

Girl met boy met girl. What was entirely their business became a grand national obsession thanks to the indiscretion of the boy and his friends and media and finally the ``Government of India``. Makes my head spin that the people at the top actually arrested the poor CEO of Bazee. Crooks are roaming freely throughout the country. A big thooooo on the politicians of India. Thooooooooo

I have arrived at the conclusion, after a lot of thought, that the less censorship there is in a society, the healthier the society. this is why i think that state-sanctioned censorship is wrong; if you choose not to, for example, watch porn because of your ethical or moral values that is good for you and praiseworthy but the State shouldn`t decide whether or not it is okay for you to watch it if you choose to do so.
If this is different from my previous views on the matter than it is because my views have changed with time. That is human nature.
As long as no one is abused in the making of porn, if it is consensual, I don`t see why it is the State`s business. That is why I am against the censoring of movies in cinemas for example. And for a poverty-ridden society like India (or Pakistan or any other 3rd world country) to waste precious time and effort and resources on such trivial matters when millions don`t have access to clean drinking water is the real pornography.

Hi,
My original article had a hyperlink to the website:
http://www.naavi.org/cl_editorial_04/edit_dec_18_04_01.htm
I have never stated that he or she should be ashamed. I`m in fact lauding their outright
honesty and brashness.
I`m very glad to know that not only is kid having fun, and keeping it out of the closet, she`s scoring well in studies too. Awesome! I maintain that this new generation of kids is way smarter than my own.
You do realise that this is only the first MMS to spread like fire. There will be more. And they won`t just be about sex. Once people realise the other things they can do with such a device, we should see a huge influence on the way media is dissipated.

One thing is true we cannot stop the access to sexual content on the net. In Pakistan government tried to block porno web sites but this thing failed as 1st their number is huge and 2ndly adding firewall slowed down the net. We cannot stop the cultural change to occur altogether. What ever happened is natural effect of access to porno content. All we can do is to educate our society to face all this in a mature and positive manner. Instead of ignoring it or taking harsh steps on individual incidences that are quite obvious should occur. Government should make a long term plan how to manage this effect by modifying our cultural and social norms in acceptable manner.

The MMS clip was a nice clean BJ being tried by the juveniles....the girl apparantly did not know how to do it and was being instructed by the boy....
So what if it was the other way round............??....and if the girl had filmed it and distributed it all to her friends????
I suppose both of them would not have minded if they were not identified at all....and if no one knew if they were from DPS .......after all they were in that age where experimentation begins....
so the fuss was raised by our great moralizers who thought that the MMS clip would have ``depraved`` others ( as the IT Act 2000 states). IMHO it was a really nice educative clip.....and should inspire others to try it out at that age...it is better than trying to blow up others at that age...................

Re:mshergill#2
I am amazed by your statements. You think there is nothing wrong in premarital sex between teenagers who are below 18 years in age? If someone in your family does that, will you consider it as normal?
What two consenting adults do behind closed doors is their own business. However in this case, the two participants were NOT adults. They were just kids in class 11. On top of this, they recorded their filthy activity and circulated it amongst their friends and the wider world. It is absolutely outrageous. I think the police should have arrested the parents of these two kids for their negligence and utter failure to raise kids who can be decent members of society.
In general, pornography is a worthless thing that should be removed from our society. It distorts the minds of impressionable kids as well as adults. People take refuge in pornography when they cannot have decent relationships in their life. A single person may have to make a lot of effort to get into a real relationship with someone. Pornography may provide a quick release but, as a result, people never develop the skillset necessary to have a good relationship.
Even married people who are not able to have real intimacy with their partners look at pornography as a substitute. I have never quite understood that mindset. As a married person, there is so much fun you can have with a real person, why look at some pictures and movies for your jollies?

For someone of my generation, it is difficult to comprehend the changes that have taken place in the Indian society. From the time when a boy in college would be thrilled if he made contact with a girl`s clothes in a bus to the brazen public broadcasting of their sexual acts by school kids is a really long journey in a single generation in a society where change was always exceedingly slow.
Delhi is at the forefront of sexual revolution. According to a survey, nearly two out of five students have experimented with sex in Delhi as compared to one in five in Mumbai and one in ten in Chennai. Wonder what the statistics would be like in Lahore. After all, the parents and grandparents of these Delhi kids had identical values.
Naqshbandi:
You are amazing!

Awright.
After my initial outrage at Mr Gupta`s biased opinion, Here are my 2 cents after I pumped some nicotine into my body and calmed down:
First of all the kids should be left alone, its not just their fault, the society is equally responsible for this disaster. They were not born with a plan to do this in their teens. The society shapes each individual, parents can try their best but the kids spend majority of their time out alone in the jungle we call modern day civilisation. The kids are exposed to all sorts of violence and vulgarity on television. The Indian cable industry is a free for all business. In the same room you have the religious dadi and the young bubbly grand children watching semi nude models and dancers exhibiting their latest pelvic skills in the item numbers. Their is no rating of any programming on any of the Channels. Its a free for all. everybody watches everything.
The indian media is going thru a transition period, they have borrowed all the style and the glitter from the west, but they did not bother to put any infrastructure in place to control or suggest the age restrictions for each channel or programme like the US has. Also the indian laws and the society is way too weak to prevent cases like the DPS MMS. Their is no concept of building a society with an indian concsience. All the writers we have in india spend their time and energy writing novels to impress the west so that they can get an award. Nobody focuses on the indian society except Shoba De who is busy writing novels full of infidelity and broken marriages. Everybody wants to be cool! Speaking in hindi became old fashioned in my father`s generation itself. Where is the indian conscience?
We are orphans! lacking a parent culture. We are trying to emulate people who were probably hanging from trees when we were writing scriptures:) Its a big shame.
Why dont we have any good sensible fiction that has characters who are indian/pakistani young adults? There should be stories that establish an identity for the sub-continental morals and values. The kids in india and I am sure also Pakistan grow up reading western teen romance and soft porn! What else do you expect from these kids when they grow up?
The DPS MMS case is slap in the face for the indian society, bureacracy and the media. The DPS MMS case is a reflection of the ugly inner self of the indian society, this is our OWN UNDOING! So instead of making the kids the scapegoats, the indian society needs to do a lot of introspection. We need to control the media and the internet, we need to look deep inside ourselves. Remember the world is nothing but a reflection of your inner self. You can not hate something bad you see without you yourself having a trace of the bad in yourself. You are responsible for anything that bothers you! Its as simple as that.
The Indian media and entertainment business is the most unleashed and shameless display of apathy towards social values and morals of the society.
The Mumbai film industry is the devil`s den. Indian movies have surpassed all scales of immorality and vulgarity. The monkeys of Shiv Sena are only bothered about destroying cricket pitches, they dont care about the damage thats being done to india by the latest breed of film makers. Recently the top brass of the mumbai police had an event marking some god forsaken anniversary they had. In this event they had all the semi-nude beauties doing gyrations to the tune of juiciest item numbers! So the police themselves have accepted all this!!
A weak , morally depraved indian society is in the making. The days are not far when the girls in our country will start taking pride in being half naked cheer leaders. They are growing up watching lara dutta and priyanka chopra live it up doing nothing but look good and sexy.
The technological revolution is accelerating the pace at which the society is decaying. Internet cafes have become swingers clubs!! What is the government doing?? Anybody can go to a internet cafe and watch and do as they please. School kids are watching porn and having sex in internet cafes under the garb of ``learning computers`` with proud parents back home pleased with their kids enthusiasm with technology! Who do we blame? The kids??
I dont think so.

Mr. Gupta, are you out of your mind??? I think you need to clear some paradoxes from your head before becoming a social observer.
I am amazed at your pseudo-intellectualism. I dont think you are mature enough to write on social issues. Give yourself another 10 years and then come back.

Grow up.
Changes are taking place in society, whose implications and full impact, we will realize in due course. Like all changes, it will have a good aspect as well as a negative aspect. The only thing that one is sure of is that change is inevtible and often painful. The forces of globalization in a world where everyone is plugged in is too strong a force for society to resist getting influenced.
The present generation do not consider sex to be ``filthy activity `` as you have put it. Many of them consider it natural and beautiful. I believe that the kids were 17 years of age. By your logic if they had waited one more year, they would have become ``Adults` and it would not have been a ``filthy act`` anymore.
I am the father of a child who child is going to become a teenager in another 2 years. I know that there is going to be tremendous peer pressure for him to smoke, take drugs, have sex etc. My duty as a father is to make sure that whatever decisions he takes, he is able to cope with it in as mature a manner which is possible at that age, knowing the implications of his actions. Children these days do whatever they do behind your back. I realize that it would be important for me to have a good communication channel with him, so that I can guide him. However that by itself may not be enough.
You on the other hand want the childrens parents to be arrested by the police !!!! We have such a noble police force which has been operating for so many decades without a single blemish. I think that they would do a splendid job, isnt it. (I hope that you note the sarcasm)
My very limited knowledge of history tells me that kings like Akbar and Aurangzeb tried to eradicate prostitution unsuccesfully. Even in Iran under their strict Islamic laws, they have failed to eradicate prostitution, and you have marriages of 1-2 hours taking place to facilitate prostitution. So laws can be made till you go blue in the face.
Cheers
